Club Statement: Addin Fonua-Blake

Mon 19th January, 11:00AM

The St George Illawarra Dragons were made aware on Monday that National Youth Competition contracted player Addin Fonua-Blake was charged by the Police, overnight, with Common Assault. As a result, the Club has stood Fonua-Blake down from club activities, effective immediately and until further notice for breeching the Club’s Code of Conduct and the Club has arranged counseling. The NRL's Integrity Unit has been informed.

The matter will go to court at the end of this month and with respect to the judicial system, the Club will not be making any further comment.

Does anyone know what the situation was? Was it a Russell packer style assault or was it a provoked and retaliated and kicked his ass type incident?

TBH, this sorta makes my position on Packer waver a bit. There is clearly an attitude problem among the youngsters in the club. Whether that comes from boredom, poor/lack of leadership, boys being boys, or whatever, thats 2 of our top juniors stood down in the last few years for assault. Its a trend that has to be stopped.

And I'm not sure that bringing a guy to the club who has been convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm is the best way to combat this trend. Sure, he may be a good example of how to turn away from that attitude. But its a big risk. And with so many other forward options on the market for next year, it's one I dont know is worth taking at this stage.

I remember having a chat many, many years ago to the old Newtown hooker Barry Jensen at a BBQ of a mates (he was an uncle of the bloke) and he was saying that he was a tradesman and worked 40 hours a week, trained 3 nights a week and played on the weekend. Now he did look like a bloke who enjoyed a few beers but he made the point that there was no time for fighting, getting on the piss everyday and absolutely no time for boredom. By Sunday night in his words he was "rooted".

There might be something in the issue of 20 year olds being overpaid and sitting around and only training and playing. I reckon we should approach local employers and have our players WORK during the day. Get them exhausted so they don't have time to be turds off the field.

I understand this is probably a naïve post and I will be shot at dawn but as the father of a 20 year old I can attest that too much money and too little things to do is a disaster for young blokes. Get these turkeys to work!
