While Melbourne 2 seems an attractive proposition, the experience of the AFL in creating derbies in "non heartland" metros (Adding GWS & Gold Coast Suns) shows we need to tread VERY carefully when considering that move... and if a derby in a non-heartland city is an option worth taking, it could conceivably be Perth if their juniors/local league really fires - because 2 teams there means a guaranteed game in that timezone every weekend, and it's a far less saturated winter sports market, given they only have 2 AFL teams.
Soccer too

They added Melb United and city’s crowds fell in half

And soccer has way better history in Melb

Yes maybe it will be Perth that can support a second team over Melbourne, however with the large population of Melbourne it would be a shame if we can’t crack a second team there.

I do think the nrl will take precaution with such a move. Look how slowly they are moving on nz2 when it seems such an obvious one to expand into.

You do realise we're not talking about going to 24 teams TOMORROW, right??

Of course, growing the top level by that much is going to be a years/decades long proposition - but the key thing is that these sort of aspirational goals need to be there, then planning takes place over getting the juniors, coaching, refereeing pathways in place so the pipeline of skilled people is there to support each phase.
I'll let you guys live in fantasy land. Good luck.

They aren’t being that cautious Perth bears had a lot of hiccups along the way and threw the expansion time line back six months

Once Perth is locked in they want to lock down the tv deal so team 20 is certainly on the back burner

But the nz rights expire in 2027 too so that will impact an nz2 team timing

It's not fantasy, it's FUTURISM - looking at trends, and trying to extrapolate & predict what the future could reasonably hold.

After all, that's actually one of the points of this expansion subforum. :)

Besides, many things that are present now - in all factors of life - would have seemed fantastical 30, heck even 20 years ago.

In the case of Rugby League, if I'd gone back to 1966 (10 suburban NSW teams in the top tier NSWRL - on the eve of the Panthers and Sharks first grade debut taking it to 12) and said that in 40 years time (2006), we'd be on the eve of a 16 team competition at the top tier with teams in Brisbane, Townsville, Auckland & Melbourne - oh and that Melbourne had won a premiership and would be a powerful club - I'd probably have been handed a straitjacket... right?

Would need a total change of commissioners and a total different way of thinking for NRl to put a club in Adelaide sadly. They have shown zero interest in SA or WA since 1998 and the only reason Perth is in the mix now is due to a State govt throwing big money at it and Vlandys lumping us with NS.

Never say never but there are no signs NRL has any interest in SA.

They are hosted there as the Stae Govt pays a motza to do so. How many origins or NRl games do you think would have been in perth and Adelaide if the money wasnt on the table? Its not strategic, its opportunistic.

If and when the NRL is successful with the next lot of expansion clubs - PNG, Perth, NZ - Adelaide will surely come up for consideration. Not in the next few years for sure, maybe not for 10/15 years. But over the next decade NRL will keep hosting Origins there, maybe some double headers like in Perth, probably a test or two, and slowly developing the junior base.

Only if SA govt fronts up the cash.

lol nothing to do with a state govt willing to tip in hundreds of millions?
The games have allowed us to show what we have known for 13 years, there's an appetite for watching NRL in Perth. Nothing new to anyone but NRL has been happy to ignore till now.

lol, how?
Whats really led to a perth team is the NRL being cashed up and comfortable about expansion alongside a state govt willing to tip in hundreds of millions of $'s.
Weve been getting decent crowds in Perth since 2012.
Success of the dolphins made the clubs players and nrl pro expansion

Govt backing helped png and Perth

lol they'd have had to do a really bad job for Brisbane2 not to have been a success.
Govt backing created the opportunity for PNG and Perth, Without it I very much doubt the NRL would have entertained the idea, certainly for PNG.
It would have been a much closer shoot out between NZ2 and Perth, or maybe a long wait to look at another Qlnd club for the 18th spot.
If WA govt walks away now I can pretty much guarantee they will stay at 18. Likewise if Govt hadnt funded PNG itd probably be Perth and stop at 18. PNG funding forces them to look at Perth for 19, then they will eventually need a 20.

wrong wrong wrong. if a gov initiates the contact with nrl about potentially having a club there then of course they will foot some of the bill. wa gov approached nrl. papuan gov approached the nrl.

if the nrl wants to a club somewhere then'll it'll be different set of criteria. i.e. dolphins and before that titans.

this is before we go into details that nrl just couldn't expand and pay for it prior to recent times. if nrl's cash positive trajectory continues then in 15 years time should they wish to expand into adelaide they might well have the cash to do it themselves. ya technically seeing this happen with perth if they are the ones forking out for the actual west aussie bears nrl club. only possible because of their current financial position.

you saying we'd need a total change of commissioners is the most rubbish statement ive seen to date. its the current commissioners getting things moving. disagree? where the f*ck have we been going in the 20 years prior to this mob? yeah thought so.

perthwrongs, ding dong

FMD you talk rubbish

Perth was no chance without the govt backing

Heck they had to increase their bid by 120 million over the original 350 million just to get a look in
