AFL timeclock question

Hey. To all the AFL fans here, just something I need to ask you:

I've noticed a difference in the timeclock that is used on the tv broadcasts. On Ch7, the time in each quarter (on the screen) counts down from 20:00 to 0. However, on the Ch10 broadcasts, when it gets down to 5 minutes, the clock starts to run like stoppage time (in soccer), sometimes going beyond the 30 min mark. Why have the stoppage time format? Wouldn't it be annoying for the players, who may not know how much time there is left in the quarter (that's if the scoreboard also uses the stoppage time format)?

Usually such a question would belong on an AFL thread but given the AFL trolls here never post there this has to be the place. Go figure:crazy::crazy::crazy:

The scoreboard doesn't do this, Undertaker.

Its purely a TV network initiative to increase viewer excitement and nervousness.

Ok, I understand that. But, it doesn't make sense. Would you rather know that there is 35 seconds left in the match (4th quarter), rather than seeing some clock at 32 minutes or something like that?

Apparently the only person that knows how much time is really left is the timekeeper, so the clock must count up. A bit wierd really.

time clocks at the ground on the scoreboards count up

tv clocks count down (except final 5mins of games on ch 10 to increase excitement)

coaches boxes have a direct feed of the time clock and how much time is left

I much preferred not knowing how much time was left.

Made it all the better when the siren blew with you less than a kick in front, and gave you hope all the way to the siren when you were less than a kick off the pace.
