AFL to spend $300 million on Gold Coast? Batlle with the NRL continues.

AFL have plenty of dough, they'll keep ploughing money into it as long as it takes, which in this case will make the 20 years it took to make Sydney and Brisbane even partially accepted, fond memories. The first thing they'll have to do is make sure within a couple of years that whoever is on the Gold coast will have advantages over other teams to artificially keep them up the top.

Heartland AFL fans are just getting past Sydney and Brisbane having advantages, get ready for the pain again you pisssants....

The bloody Aces are probably already dead... lol

The QRU wants one side . How pathetic for a state thatprobably supplied over half the Onion World Cup winning squads in 1991 and 1999.

I honestly think that this might be a turning point for the AFL. The whole thing seems so unpopular and if North Melbourne die because of this it could cause an uproar (although considering how meekly afl fans have accepted the premierships given to the Lions/Swans it might not). No matter what happens the AFL is going to lose an absolute sh*tload of money and a lot of goodwill, something the NRL can capitalise on if it's smart.

When you highlight the fact that concessions have already been seen in AFL and they went largely unnoticed, surely this time it is a bit more signposted and potentially more damaging. But would people really care? Would time heal all wounds?

Let's try and draw some parallels between this event and Souths getting the boot.

Q: Did Souths getting the boot cause an uproar?
Q: Did it affect the popularity of the game during their absence?
Q: If Souths lost the court case and didn't get reinstated, would the game be at or around it's present level of popularity now?

North Melbourne are not in the same league as South Sydney as far as history goes. But what it has done is it has created a sense of anxiety amongst supporters of other Melb. clubs about their future. They now see the AFL as doing anything it wants at the expense of clubs, including threatening them with extinction.

This is a very good thing for RL, regardless if at the end of it the GC has some sort of bastardised AFL team. Demetriou has shown his hand and he ain't got much, further backing himself in to a corner.

Searle must continue with his line that it will not be a true GC team and get the local media behind him, thus creating a sense of bad will for the new team. Furthermore, Melbourne must capitalise on more disenfranchised AFL supporters, even though it is a slow (but very winnable) battle.

If the AFL get the same, or god forbid better, TV deal next time they will be saying what a great decison it was to expand to the GC. AFL Fans in Perth, Adelaide, rival Melbourne, clubs don't give a bollox if a failing club is ditched or forced to move if it means more money coming into the sport.

Can you imagine were our game could be if we had the finacial clout and the vision that the AFL has?

How much did the NRL and AFL get for their last tv deal?

AFL 780m for 5.

Tried to Google the NRL figure but it seems people have paid for top space.... about 450m for 6 from memory.

Yeah, amazing what competition will do to a price isn't it?

Still, paying big money doesn't always guarantee results......

Good for the Melbourne Storm. More victorians to follow the league.
Bad for Gold Coast and Qld. I don't want more of that trype in my state.
Even though they'll struggle and hopefully fail. It's still going to take some coverage from league which sux.

That table is a ripper.

To put that in perspective, despite what that says, AFL _probably_ beat us by a few hundred thousands, considering the figures don't factor in country Victoria + Tasmania at all.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't Regional TAM only cover ratings with those regional areas that have 3 commercial licences? That would rule out about a million people from Tasmania, NT and the areas of Vic that only have two commercial licences.
