AFL Trade Week 2004

I've just looked more thoroughly over the various trades, and Carlton would probably claim the best value trade of the week in getting hold of Troy Longmuir from Freo in exchange for pick 73.

Essendon bombed-out after trying for a couple of arrogant late "lets try and put a gun to a couple of clubs' heads just prior to the close of trading deadline" plays, which was good to see.

The Bulldogs did well to survive concerted plays for a couple of their key assets and get through the week with picks 3 & 6 still in hand.

Geelong should be happy to get a hold of a key player who could bring much to their structure, particularly having battled vainly for years to lure big names to the club. Having plugged away with young players for years they could well afford to sacrifice their first crack this time around.

St Kilda's approach to player targets was baffling to say the least???!!! I like Whitnall, but he's not well suited to the Saints structure and I'm perplexed as to why they would have invested so much wasted momentum in trying to get him. Aaron Fiora? May go okay, but it certainly comes across as something of a project pick. I guess they're well enough placed to get away with it.

Melbourne would have came out ahead overall, but Fremantle had one of the poorer weeks I've seen. Carr was a handy acquisition, but losing Simmonds and Longmuir (for pick 73!) was damaging, as was the loss of their first 3 draft picks. Black should be solid though.

Richmond entered the week on top and came out still in pole position. Ottens is a loss, but a necessary one. The club would have liked to have got the trade through for Zantuck who may now be lost through the PSD, but the extra first round draft picks for Ottens will be very useful.

Hawthorn pulls up a solid second, maintaining key picks 2 & 5 and getting high pick 7 as a bonus. Thompson will be a loss in the short-term, but at the end of the day he was a full forward struggling to get to a 2 goal a game average and his attitude suggested that he was more a liability than an asset to the club.

Collingwood? Pick 10 isn't a huge drop down from 7 and Morrison will surely be rock solid for them. The problem is that the club is awash with good solid players like Chad, but struggles to snare top notch playing talent (whether it be through gun youngsters or big names from rival clubs). Its lack of depth, leg speed and genuine class will ensure ongoing list erosion until they find themselves in a similar position to hawthorn & Richmond (most likely in an even worse situation).

Very neccesary. Brad was one of the cancers that needed to be eradicated. This is now done and we will have 25% of Australia's top kids of 2004 at the club next year.

Bit difficult to nominate when you're contracted to a club :)

That along with Essendons continued decline would truely be a shame for all that is good and great about our game ;-) ;-)

Not arguing it, although it wasn't that long ago that you were taking me to task for suggesting that Ottens had fallen short of early predictions of greatness :p

Oops, didn't realise he was still contracted. So is Whitnall, which rules out getting him to the club.

I'd be keen to find out about the respective situations of Ackland & Salopek at Port, either of whom would look good in brown & gold.

I'd also be willing to run with Travis Johnstone, but I can't see Melbourne letting him go for nix when push comes to shove.

That was prior to this year. A number of cancers were identified this year and this money hungry grub was certainly one of them.

How fitting Richmond plays Geelong in Round 1 at the G next year.

What you reckon Brad's reception is going to be from the Army when he inevitably lines up in the Southern Stand goal square ;-) ;-) ;-)
