After a digital camera

What should I get? I'm heading overseas soon and I'd like to buy one. I'm not after something too expensive or classy, none of that waterproof, shockproof stuff is really necessary, just something good that can get the job done, probably 14+ megapixels. Would also prefer if it came with red eye correction and a memory card, at least 8gb. Price range is $250-$300.

Thanks ;-)

Get one with batteries, not a rechargeable job.

You would go a long way to beat a Cannon in value for money.

Get good quality cards. cheap usually lets you down.

Yep any point and shoot jobby from Canon or Nikon in that price range will do the job.

I understand Ozbash's point about getting one that runs on batteries, saves the hassles of trying to remember to charge it every night. Only problem is so few cameras run on standard batteries these days that you'll struggle to find a decent one IMO.

A good and reliable online retailer for cameras is www.ryda.com.au

You can get a Nikon S6300 for $220 on there, and a 16GB SD card for about $30. $250 on the nose :D

How long are you going overseas for? If you are the kind of bloke who may be prone to lose a camera, I would suggest buying a bunch of 4GB SD cards as opposed to a single high capacity one. Means you'll end up with your photos spread across a bunch of cards that once full you just keep in your suitcase. That way if you lose the camera you don't lose all your pics

Mate, you're in Sydney yeah? Check out Lidcombe, North Parramatta and Bankstown (homemaker centre) Dick smith, they're closing down, so everything is cheap and way below cost. They need to sell everything so you might grab yourself something cheap.

Only problem is the places are closing I think this weekend, so all the good stuff might be already gone. Can't hurt to try, might find yourself a bargain.

I actually prefer cameras that come with their own battery. The ones that use standard batteries don't last very long.

My daughters got a Pentax with its own battery. Ok if you are near a power source or in a country where your charger fits or if you have a charged up spare.

If you go bush for a while, AA,s are easier and universal.

Ok sounds good, thanks for the heads up. Only overseas for about 7 weeks. Won't be prone to losing it (hopefully lol). Would prefer 1 SD, 16 GB would be fine. As long as I can go photo crazy and take some short videos I'll be happy. HD recording is not really what I'm after, probably HQ more less (480p).

Homemaker is closing down in all of those 3 areas? Mate that's a bit of a worry. What's the deal there? Kind of short notice for me to check it out now, might give them a call on Monday... hopefully someone will answer lol. Thanks for the heads up though :)

I got a canon 1100d about a month ago for $638 with a twin lens kit. they are about $100 cheaper and are a great dslr if you want to dip your toe in the water with something bigger.

The megapixel rating means little unless you are going to print out A4+ size photos and few people print out their photos these days. Anything above 8MP and you are fine.

The bigger the memory card, the more shitty photos you will take and keep. I've got a 128MB card from the good old days, keeps me from taking too many bad photos.

Yeah I think that's the SLR range though right? I'm just after a slim one that'll go in the pocket - but that one you got sounds good :)

Well I'll be running slide shows of the pics on the tv and pc so more megapixels is good for that too. As for the 128mb memory card... it won't do much seeing as the resolution I'll most likely use will be 1600x1200. Plus I'll be using it to do HD recording too and that'll chew up a lot of space.

thats true camera makers use the argument more megapixels = better pictures but a 10mp camera might take better pictures than a 12mp one it depends on the sensor, aperature size etc etc

check out http://snapsort.com/ they have a page where you can put in two camera models and it will compare their specs and give you a rating of which one is better

ive still got a 256mb usb flash drive maybe we can donate them to the same museum :D
i doubt you could even buy a memory card under 2gb nowadays most of them are 4gb and up (mine is 32gb ;-))
