this is not the solution. they need to target the action, not the outcome. reducing the number of these actions will reduce the chances of this horrible outcome.

if you're only going to get heavily suspended for the outcome, then everyone will continue to do it because there's such a small chance of this outcome happening that it will be worth the risk to continue doing it.

Not as harsh as it could have ended up, only problem now is it opens the door to fake injuries to influence the judicary. e.g lets say Bunnies v roosters rnd 26 likely to play each other in the finals, inglis puts a clumsy hit on a player falling in a tackle, player knocked out and clearly hurt and misses the rest of the game. Roosters claim player has broken jaw and is out for season, inglis gets 5 weeks. Lol just joking guys injured player plays the next week.

The precedent was set last year with Kade Snowden. Especially given that in the same round Pritchard probably did the worst shoulder charge all year & got off with a more lenient suspension.

Judicary has made their decision...7 weeks...so be it but if the same type of tackle occurs (and it has) and there is NO horrific injury like what happened to Alex McKinnon and the player on the receiving end suffers a minor injury or is unscathed....does the lifter get 7 weeks.

The NRL will have to be consistent .......7 weeks for all lifting tackles regardless of the injury suffered.

Until the refs blow the whistle as soon as the hand goes between the legs they will continue as they are instinctive same way as players still head high tackle. Only way to cut down the risk is to blow the game dead instant it looks like it will happen.

This is right.

And as the refs will not obliterate these techniques from the game, the judiciary must.

I posted a quote from Jim Comans to Bob Cooper earlier in this thread and the quote is apt.

And Comans sentencing worked. This form of thuggery was obliterated with 2-3 big suspensions. As is 18 month suspensions.

Obviously the injury to McKinnon has contributed to the 7 weeks suspension, on top of McLean illegally lifting him above the horizontal. I think the judiciary got it right.

Ok so the motto is no harm, no foul.

Would advise Melbourne not to appeal, send the kid away with his family to somewhere remote.

Nothing changes for Alex, everyone behind him.

7 weeks, wow.
I thought maximum 2.
Had an extra week to think about it and still came up with a bad decision. Nrl = laughing stock

If anything the Inu tackle punishment is consistent with this one

It was a worse tackle but without loading for a injury outcome.

Consistency isn't a victim in this case.

We may not agree with the injury loading but it is here to stay and one would assume it is here through some sound legal advice that the NRL received.

Storm should issue a statement that they disagree with the severity of punishment but at this time chose not to contest it but instead continue to do all within their power for the welfares of both Alex and Jordan respectively.

For mine that would be handling the issue with some tact and dignity

Here is part of MCLeans defence by his lawyer Nick Ghabar.

Ghabar expressed deep sympathy for MCKinnon and his family but insisted with respect that the Knights youngster "unfortunately and unwittingly contributed to his injury by tucking his head into his chest before hitting the ground.
He said if McKinnon did not change his posture mid tackle "there would be no way he would have landed on his head".

A quick way to lose sympathy for McLean blame the victim.

In REALITY, this statement is 100% correct, and one thing in general life that people do not want to hear or know is the reality of things(when things turn out bad). If you watch him, he deliberately tucks his head down which as ghabar states above has unfortunately and unwittingly contributed, its as plain as a day, and to follow, he is correct he would not have landed directly on his head, its there in a replay for each and everyone of us to see it.

How the above statement is passing blame to mackinnon is ridiculous, the reality is there in the replay, seriously his defence has stated the reality of the accident - its clear as day to me, and also every single former and current first grader that i have seen interviewed. People that are respected through league circles, not one of them has said that this was a bad tackle.

At least the judiciary put an end to Melbourne's ridiculous defence! That was almost as laughable as Smith complaining to the ref!

Pretty obvious they were gonna suspend him for at least 6 because of the injury in the tackle. The NRL wouldn't risk the damage to their image if they let him off or only gave him 1-2 weeks. Deal with it and move on Melbourne. Not as if he won't play again.
