The $100K to get out of bed is a lot more involved than just getting from bed to wheelchair. It probably takes hours from waking up to being in his chair and ready to face the day. He likely requires some form of physical therapy (stretches and whatnot) to prevent his muscles from further atrophy and deterioration. Showering, brushing his teeth, taking a shit, getting dressing, getting brekky and f**k knows what else.
The hoist to lift him anywhere from $3-10K+ depending on if its mobile or fixed into his ceiling which requires structural reinforcements to fit it - he probably needs both anyway. His wheelchair wouldn't be cheap. His house modifications not just turning steps into ramps, but making all sorts of everyday shit accessible like his kitchen benches, bathroom etc. Chairs for showering/toileting depending on his requirements could easily hit $7K. He hasn't even left the house yet and cars are expensive as is - go get one modified just to carry a wheelchair passenger and double the price of the car as a starting point. If you want it modified so he can drive it you're heading into $150-200K+ territory, maybe more.
Those equipment costs probably only occur every 10 or so years, but what about paying the wages of the people qualified to provide him with the support to use it all every day and every night?
I have a friend whose power wheelchair packed it in all of a sudden a few years ago. He was literally stuck at home in a push chair (which he can't maneuver himself) for 5 months while he waited for a new one. Luckily he had good employers who waited it out and he still had a job to go back to. His chair had very few modifications and still clocked in at a shade under $17K.
Next time you wake up in the middle of the night needing a piss and you just hop up, go piss and get back into bed all within a couple of minutes without having to disturb anyone else, don't take that shit for granted.
