Alex Mckinnon To Sue

Haha fat fingers on an iPad. But yes he could be letting "loose" a whole can of worms. How many injuries, all be it not as serious, do we see across sport due to foul play? Are we saying it is ok to sue for them all or just the serious ones?

he got nearly $3mill and a job for life whilst others are managing on ndis so it's not like he hasn't been looked after by the game is it?
What if he doesn't want the job for life? what if he doesn't want to be reminded everyday of what his involvement in the game did to him?

He has a right to a quality level of life, this measure would be to gain access to the public liability insurance. I think I remember when the possibility of this was first raised Smith (CEO, how funny I forgot his 1st name) was supportive of the action.

He could go on ndis like most other poor sods who end up in his position.

Think about this. The NRL has brought in automatic sin bin laws that prevent players throwing a punch in case somebody is injured from the punch. The response... players have almost completely ceased from throwing punches.
Rugby Union sin bins for them yet they still happen

because they are accidental. You could punish them as harshly as you, like but it won't stop accidents like that happening just reduce the chances.

Ummm, not attempting to compare the McKinnon case AT ALL but a only recently a woman who slipped on a grape at Coles was awarded 90K.

For slipping on a grape.

This is the world we live in.

Be careful of those grapes ladies and gentlemen.
I fail to see the problem with that? If the grape isn't there she never slips over, Coles were at fault.
Someone is responsible and it's Coles.

As for Alex, even though I didn't particularly like how he treated Cam Smith, he's basically doing what ANY player would do in the exact same position.
He would be advised to do this, it's no hard feelings I'm sure but this is what people have to do.
If you want to be angry at someone, be angry at the fact that injured people have to sue to be able to afford to live after the fact.

Be angry at the cost of medical bills etc.
But this was always going to happen.

How are people comparing a punch to a bad tackle?

A punch is something a player chooses to do... whether it's through anger, reaction or whatever. You can sin bin it effectively because a player chooses to throw punches.

Some players make upwards of 50 tackles a game. Often with 2 or 3 others involved in the tackle... they are usually high speed collisions and there are do many ways a tackle can end up being illegal with zero intention from anyone.

If you start sin binning players for tackles that are remotely dangerous there will be no one left on the field.

Intentional or wreckless tackles are fair enough to punish with a sin bin or send off. But if you do it to every tackle with the potential to cause injury you would end up playing touch footy.

Lifting tackles are intentional....you don't accidentally put your hands between a blokes legs and lift....

It probably depends on the circumstances of the grape being there? If another customer dropped it 2 seconds earlier then there is not much chance Coles could have done anything whereas if the grape was left there for a while then Coles should have cleaned it up.

Mods can we get a separate thread for this grape case?

Why should he? he should go for whatever compensation he can get. Set himself as best he can in life, its not like he is going to be pissing the money up the wall, he needs this money to live.

Not sure if there are any punters here, but in horse racing the occurrence of spinal injuries are at least 10 times that of the NRL and they don't need millions to manage.

No he doesn't need $20mill plus the $2.5mill plus a job for life to live, plenty in his position lead full lives on a shed load less. Don't get me wrong I don't blame him, in his situation I'd do the same,
Better to live on millions than tens of thousands.

A tackle like that would be an automatic red card, which is a pretty serious disincentive.

The whole gang tackle thing is inherently dangerous, even if a player is not lifted and dropped on his head, lots of other potential for serious injury.

Than why shouldn't he try. Over his lifetime the NRL will be bringing in billions of $, in just the next 5 years they will be brining in 2 billion. So even at that rate, next 40 years they bring in $16 billion, $20 million is nothing in those terms for someone who will need care for the rest of his life. Lets as a game look after the people who provide our entertainment, hell it costs $20 million to run some of our clubs for one year and all our clubs are looking at a possible $13 million grant next year. He is asking for a very small amount when looked at in comparison to what the game earns.

How anyone can put a price on not being able to walk ever again or use your arms is beyond me.
20 mil is not even close to what I'd want to be in his position.

Wake up people.

If he wins this opens a whole new can of worms for the NRL. There are ALOT of ex league players out there suffering from injuries as a direct result of playing the game.

While I feel sorry for Alex, you knew the risks.

Just when I thought this thread couldn't show up anyone being as low as Perth Red you come up with this little gem. Congratulations.

I hope this opens up a swimming pool of worms for the NRL. I hope Alex wins, and then I hope every other player that's ever been effected in a similar way through a game that somehow has no insurance for its employees also sue and also win.

If it forces the NRL to realise they have a duty of care and actually set up a proper, long-term insurance system for its players then that is absolutely fantastic.

People are acting like Alex chose to drink and drive while knowing the risks. He showed up for work and was injured on the job and somehow that job doesn't have proper insurance like most would to help with his long-term care needs.
