Oh they should prop them up.
Lets see, propping the storm up for another 5 years after what they have already spent on them will take the total bill to over $100,000,000.
News should also have to give every other club in the competition that didn't sell their soul to super league a $100,000,000 cheque for more than a decade of them having to subsidise this experiments existence, that's a % of the 100 million, the rest is just compensation for having to basically be "in the same room" as this f**king slime.

After that, they can get f**k out of the game and never return, and take the clown arse administration with them, you pack of scab merkins.

Melbourne public don't get to see their games on fta, they might get to see it on fox and probably watch but that is still the minority.

If we pull the plug now can we honestly say the NRL, Channel 9 and News did the best they could? The answer is no so we do a Perth Reds all over again and if later down the track we decide to go back to Melbourne we will alienate any fans we have forged.

They have played at a crappy ground all their tenure.

Again it is a Dragons supporter complaining  as predictable as the sunrise.

They were like a horse led to water typicalfan, they have not had to scringe and scrounge like other clubs have had to, be it in the past or in recent times, the have had everything gifted to them.

If it can't float now, it never well.

Alienate the fans?
Who gives a sh*t, you stand to alienate around 15 to 20 people.
I'd rather see the money blown on strippers, a high rise penthouse and a tub of cocaine, at least there would be something to show for it then.
Give NZ another team, do something ffs, in any case what is essentially lighting $6,000,000 a year on fire is not doing much except creating smoke, and f**king expensive smoke at that.

would be better if they had a half decent ground which they now get and Ch9 fulfilled contractual obligations.

They are starting to develop strong local juniors and in the event of more decent coverage they will get stronger. They are in the toughest place in Australia to make it as a rival code to AFL it takes time. More that 12 years.

Pete are you really that stupid? Don't blame Melbourne for the NRL's deliberate underselling of the game there. Take a look at Storms Foxsports viewing numbers, it will answer all your questions on why there is still no FTA coverage into Vic.

Try and get a $1billion deal with only two capital cities!

What's it got to do with the seat of government? I don't hear of a baseball team called the Albany Giants, do you?

When will you get it into your thick head that people with TV's do not only live in large cities? Newcastle is a far more lucrative market than Melbourne!

Re Melbourne, realise that at the moment News Ltd foots the bills, not the code. If melbourne is to survive post News Ltd, it either needs to be self sufficient, or will be propped up by other clubs. Guess how clubs will react to poker machine taxes and player inflation if their hard earned is sucked out even more to fund Melbourne!

Yep Iafeta, I wasn't insinuating anything re handouts. I was thinking of another thread last month noting that the TV rights revenue from NZ is double that of the expenses of the Warriors, thus even if the Warriors run at a loss, they benefit the NRL in toto by existing.

Spot on. It's the big carrot for retention of clubs that hit niche markets, and realistically, from an overall economic perspective rather a pure '''''accounting books'''' perspective, when you take into consideration the media rights and sponsorship revenues, these clubs outside of the two major league localities are of enormous strategic benefit to the NRL.

hmmm, maybe it made sense to expand to an area that actually had a junior base and competition in place.

the whole thing has been a sh*t pile from day one

again, it's a tard supporter making apologies

 what is a tard supporter?

Why would a TV network pay extra money for a team in an area which already watches NRL as opposed to Melbourne which has an amazing potential for growth.

And here is a little hypothetical for you, lets say our next rights go for $800m over 5 years and the Melbourne's presence gave us an extra 50m after seeing as it is the 2nd largest city in Australia the Storm grow in terms of junior participation and success in competitions like Toyota Cup and SG Ball and potential for growth in ratings like on digital networks which will be mandatory by that time. Why would then giving them 6 mill or reduce that over time, how would that be costing the game anything?

You need to explain why someone would pay that much to show a game in melbourne that no-one watches. Obviously they wont. Fact is that the current broadcaster has to pump money into the joint. There is no way they are going to drop 10 times as much.

The clear way out of this is to ensure that News Ltd honor their side of the NRL deal.

If they want to get out early then they should pay the penalty. If this means that News Ltd have to prop up the Storm for a few more years then so be it.

To expect the NSW fans to keep paying for the Storm fiasco is beyond a joke.

The fact that the negotiators are even considering this proposal shows how weak the RL leadership is and how News Ltd control the game. Even when bailing out.

What that shows is that we should all be thankful that the people running the game are able to see what happens if you have a game in 2 states only.
This forum is starting to resemble a bar where there are bitter old NSWRL fans that want to turn the clock back to the old days where it was nothing more than a state league... The NSWRL is still there if that's what people want!!

so hypothetically, you want to pay clubs based on what they bring to revenue?

Because of potential for growth, a team with a new stadium, with more tv exposure and high membership numbers in the 2nd biggest market in Australia a network can say yes we can make some money out of this sport over the 5 year period.

If we swapped Melbourne for the Central Coast for example who deserve a team but not at the expense of Melbourne, you have an area which already watches Rugby League so why would a TV Network shell out more peas for that and miss out on having a national competition without a Melbourne side?

and 50m is only 1/16 of 800m hardly ten times but enough to justify the money to be pumped in and only temporarily, as the junior bases increase and they get enough coverage they will pay the competition back well and truly more than they cost.
