GLADIATORS ROMA vs I MAGNIFICI FIRENZE (Central/South Conference - ITALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP of RUGBY LEAGUE)

On Sunday at 6.30pm at the Union Fields Capitolina in Rome, Via Flaminia 867 will be held the second round of the Southern group of the Italian League of Rugby League.
The teams that will do battle are the hosts and debutants Roma Gladiators, while the challengers (Magnifici Firenze) are' veterans' from the victory over the Spartans Spes Catania last week.
It provides a good match between two teams that have had the opportunity to develop a good plan. For the Roman team have collected a few words by Pierluigi Gentile, coach / player of the Gladiators and former Italian national in the last Euro Cup.

Gladiators Roma - www.gladiatorsromarugbyleague.it

How prepared are the Gladiators for their debut in rugby league?
"We have prepared with great humility and seriousness. During the training we were able to give us a trial of the game and see the many different aspects of the game, address them and learn them. We are ready and confident of our means even if we know the quality of the Florentines, who certainly will have the same grit as their coach! " (Firenze coach being Super 10's player & Italy A RU player - Luigi Ferraro)

What are the key players on your team?
"The key players are there! We have built and structured our game on groups and not individuals. We have tried to create a good blend and we have succeeded, we must now put it to the test against the Tuscans who appear to be quite strong with forwards and centers. "

Rugby League, just a passion or an opportunity?
"For the moment it is just a passion we hope will be an opportunity, the difference is to try and not give up. Just to have had the opportunity to take this adventure I have to thank our sponsors and partners Felpharma, Namau Independent Movement, Art Tekno , First Hawaiian Bank, Medisport, Art Trade, FAO, Cris and Pizzeria Cafe 11. And finally I would like to thank the company Capitolina Union for giving us the opportunity to train and play matches on our own pitch. "

Florence speaks instead of a match the mouth of its chairman / coach Luigi Ferraro, who is entering the game this Sunday (June 27 at 18.30 Field of Capitolina on the Via Flaminia) against the team of Roman Gladiators, here are some its considerations on the game.

Magnifici Firenze - www.magnifici13.it

The Gladiators loos like a very important consideration for Magnificent Florence, do you know about them?
"Although this is their debut in the league, I know the quality and experience of players like Shane Pavan and Pierluigi Gentile. I expect a team that is well prepared with a remarkable technician, we rely on what little experience we have in more from the development from the first meeting with the Spes Spartans Catania. "

As the team prepared for this challenge?
"Technically we have worked on the mistakes from aspects that had created problems in the first game and we have kept the defensive positioning in this meeting so we can not afford to make mistakes."

There will be changes from the game against the Spartans?
"There will be training in the insertion of Alejandro Rios, Argentinan player quality under the Firenze Rugby 1931, and Tommaso Bergamini, a young man of great physical impact from Modena Rugby"

You ask your kids to focus on field placements?
"I'll ask more attention on positioning and less fouls. We commit ourselves to better manage the actions of attack and not give anything about all the opportunities we can build."

Here is the list of probable squad for the game:

GLADIATORS ROMA: Pierluigi Gentile, Andrew Tagliavento, Tury Brasca, Shane Pavan, Opeta Palepoi, Franzoni Giacomo, Rosa Marco, Giuseppe Credo, Matteo Marchetti, Stefano Arbitrio, Valerio Gentile, Alex Panetti, Michele Nitoglia, Pierpaolo Rota, Brandizzi Marco, Alfonso Damiani, Palozzi Patrizio, Cristiano Bronzini, Luca Santarcangenlo, Simone Martellucci, Giacometti Gianandrea, Cosma Garfagnoli, Emiliano Muccifora, Domenico Angelini, Andrea Diodoro, Matteo Zitelli, Gori Claudio

Gladiators Roma58-26 Magnificent Florence. As soon as possible to come after the match -photos, comments and report/scores to come.

First match of rugby league for a Roma based team, begins with a large win! One tough match next week against Spes Spartans Catania to decide out of the 3 teams who makes the GF (Roma & Firenze are on a win each). GF is going to be held in Rome, with 2 ranking finals as curtain raisers, all 3 finals being North V South.
Go Gladiators! (my team)

Piacenza play Leoni Veneti next weekend (Griffons Padova bye) - winner progresses to GF. (Piacenza favourites to qualify for the Northern Conference spot).
Spes Spartans Catania play Gladiators Roma next weekend - Roma now favourites - although all 3 teams are very well run and Catania could pull off a surprise (would need a big win due to Points Differential).

CQ Italia,

it must be important that the Italian league comp takes time to grow and not rush in and expand too quickly. A bit like Lebanon.

I think get all the current clubs established, officials well trained in refereeing, coaching etc, and continue to promote the Italian national side.

The italians should play the minor nations and get some victories under their belt before they begin to take on the likes of Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and France. This should occur in perhaps 3-5 years.

Just some thoughts!

Well they need some changes before next year in solving a few things.. Think it need to be a bit more professional in attitude & longer.. Eventually semi pro comp level could be a goal.
4/6 teams are run pretty well.
Coaching is a problem they need more quality coaching with people with RL knowledge (one/two have contacted me before about helping out in this regard).
Italy could play French Elite A/2 teams, Ireland A, Scotland A, etc..

I'd suggest getting rid of the conferencing if it is possible. It lengthens the competition giving the guys more matches and makes "spreading the word" easier. Get a few more teams in before conferencing it; a 2 game season is clearly not enough.

Well that's for them to sort out but I can suggest it. Being early days, it could be to save money initially for teams. However for conferencing 2 Southern teams could both be the strongest, yet a Northern team gets the other GF spot.
Some changes to come could be involved in bringing in such changes or making it more longer/professional thinking

Professionalism doesn't appear to be a problem when compared to other RL comps around the globe. The logos, jerseys, squad numbers (at least 20 in each team) have been excellent and the short season is perfect for a domestic competition still in it's infancy.

Yes no problem with most of the teams, some experienced Rugby staff involved & obviously godo competitive players .. They have done a lot of work and some good promotion for most. From the teams that have published it - they have got Media coverage in papers.

But I thinking scheduling / preparation / organisation / could be much better, from others!

I know their was a TV director at the Gladiators game - but trying to establish if it will get TV coverage as highlights/replayed or added on the web. That would be a good start. And for how many of the games.

Potential is there to grow the game for the future and become a stronger RL nation.

Promotion from the Italian & myself - we have done a good job, especially the teams & Italian RL Media, considering the championship is in it's first year & people have limited time & resources. Have a few ideas to improve promotion for next year so far (if im helping) - depending on readily available & sent info/report from all teams.

2 teams were 50/50 for player numbers. But the other 4 all have numbers overflowing. Think some strong talent would be there too. A pity the Ugandan RU International, isn't Italian - scored 4 in round 1, but good attracting players of that calibre.

There a a Bulgarian, Argentinan, Ugandan - from the players I know of. (Apart from a few OS Italians/players that traveled or already live there).

Would be interesting how alot of the new players to Rugby League go in Internationals as well, against similar ranked nations.

One player in Firenze is only 17 and looks like a Sonny Bill type build. But hopefully we get to see some coverage to see how they have went at the "New" Rugby. (reports suggest who has went well though)

Round 2 - Italian Championship Rugby League

In the Southern Italia Conference, the match was played in Rome, the Gladiators played strongly in their historic debut rugby a XIII match, but the Magnificants fought to the end.
58 to 22 the deficit suffered by the red and white of Firenze (Florence) that bring home a drop in the point standings for the four tries scored.

In a very hot afternoon, at the Capitolina Rugby Union field, The Magnifici Firenze met the Roma Gladiators for the second fixture of round two of the Italian Rugby XIII Championship. The final result (58 to 22 for the hosts - Roma) says a lot about the technical and physical gap expressed by the team yesterday in the Roman camp and the rugby league experience / knowledge, captain Pierluigi Gentile has taken from the few years of being involved with the National team.

"A team that was very prepared with very little going wrongg, with elements taken from most many major Italian Rugby Union competitions, says the coach Gigi Ferraro. They have practiced a nearly impenetrable defense, with quick restarts in attack – says the Super 10's player"

"It 's been an extremely positive debut for us - added the captain of the Roman's Pierluigi Gentile - against a very strong team and well placed in the field, we had watched the first match they had played against the Spartans Spes Catania last week. The Magnifi maintained for most of the game with a very high pace and we succeeded only in attacking from a distance, we must thank Gigi Ferraro and all for this great day of Rugby League.”

In the first half of the game the Magnificents responded well to the initiatives of the Romans after blow for blow taken in a substantial balance until the 30th minute the first time. The trys of Giacometti, Panetti and Diodoro, responded in sequence to those of Falleri, Nava e Passaleva up to the 27 'first time on 16 to 16. The game was tough, hard and very physical. The defensive organization of the Gladiators and their ability to avoid mistakes took over with two goals transforms Zitelli and Diodoro. The scores went to 28-16 at half time.

Upon returning to field there was a good account of the “red and white” (Magnifici) character trying to reassemble the result. I spend a lot of Florentine and Rome still impresses with Rotella and Zitelli. The Magnificent know they can find the path of action with only half off and the last half lily Rios proves it. The reaction runs out of the Magnificent and Florence left the final step in which the Gladiators scored three times with Nitoglia, Franzoni and Giacometti .

Now the turn for waiting goes to Firenze with the bye in round 2, who next weekend along with all the Italian Rugby a XIII teams will see their placement rankings for the finals in Rome on July 18.
