Allan Langer or Andrew Johns - Which halfback achieved more?

Allan Langer, was halfback with 4 premiership-winning Brisbane Broncos sides. Played 37 games for Queensland (including Tri-Series), winning 19 of those as halfback (with 1 draw). Represented Australia in I think 22 Tests.

Andrew Johns, halfback with 2 premiership-winning Newcastle sides. Played 23 games for NSW, winning 7 as halfback (with 1 draw). Represented Australia in 18 Tests.

Langer also played with the severe handicap of being shorter and weighing less, so consequently it is fair to add 50% to his achievements to even up the scores.

I believe Allan Langer has achieved much, much more as a halfback than Johns has or will, therefore making him the better player by default.

Nice of you to state all the team achivements and leave out the countless MOM's and individual awards.....something Johns leads Langer by a fair margin in.

I met both players in 1998 during a Test match training session.

Both were really great, really friendly. I got them both to sign about 178 footy cards each. Johns was giving Langer some stick because I had more cards of him. :D

What I dont like about this thread is "Acheived more" makes me feel like you are making a mockery out of Johns' career and his ongoing injuries...

Why didn't you just make it a better player thread ?

JOhns sh*t on langer. Better attacker, kicker defender, you name it. Premiership winning sides doesnt make Langer better, just means he had a better side around him. If Newcastle had the chequebook of brisbane or the influence to start their own comp maybe Newcastle would be better.

Absolutely sh*tebrained logic. Langer played in teams that make Newcastle look like kinder kids. Langer had a team of internationals around him every week. Johns has achieved more on his own than LAnger would have on his own.

Joey for me, his defence was much better than Alfie's defence imo

He has captained Club, State and Country.

Dally M winner in 1998, 1999, 2002, 2nd in 2005, after missing out on 8 games.
Provan-Summons Medal winner in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001
Rugby League Week's Player of the Year 1998, 1999, 2002

Won Golden Boot award as best player in the world 1999, 2001.
Player of the Series Australia v Great Britain 2001
Clive Churchill Medal 2001

I can't find Langer's info in that sort of detail but I'd imagine the two would be fairly similar in terms of rep honours but Johns would have more personal awards/records. If someone can find Langer's personal info to go with this be my guest.

Only after the league changed the rules to handicap him. Alfie perfected tripping over the big blokes before the league came up with some bizarre tripping rule that you needed 2 hands on the opposition before you could trip em over. It was one of the many devious acts the NSWRL came up with to hamper Alfie's brilliant defensive technique, I'm sure the QLD's will remember it.

What has being half-back got to do with anything :?

Where talking about halfbacks...

I would say, that if i had the choice at the end of the day to choose the achievements of one of the players i would take 4 premierships and 37 origins. Johns is a brilliant player, probably a much better alround player then Langer, but at the end of the day i believe Langers achievements are monumental.

On all those individual awards that Johns got, they dont really mean that much (without going into the faults of the Dally M and Golden Boot). Rugby league is a team game and i believe the premierships are the real team achievement. So Andrew Johns, best player in the world when not struck by injuries, but i believe Alan Langers achievements are greater over his career.

Yeah, but Joey playing at hooker still had a massive effect on the games... so his achievements dont count if he is outta position...
