Anderson hints at quitting Sharks quietly

In that case, let's rule option 2 out. Which of the remaining 3 would you now choose?

I'd take option four. Ideally I'd rather have a successful team on the paddock, regardless of who is coaching them. Following that I'd take option 3 and then 1.

Forget about the $400K payout. The board have Ando on toast, and his management and legal team bloodywell know it. THAT is why this talk of 'going quietly' is emerging. We WILL NOT be paying him out of his full contract, any payout will be modest and reflective of the breach notices that have resulted in his imminent departure.

As for Raper being 'up to standard'...Well, I recall hearing talk on numerous occasions last year that a furious Rogers was ready to take over as interim coach mid-season 2003. Reports in the Herald (for what they are worth) today would suggest that this scuttlebut was not very far from the truth.

Rogers + Raper + DEANO, - Anderson Sr, - Anderson Jr, - Losing Bulldogs Culture + A Bloody Great 2004. Hell, take Bailey and Noddy. Even without them we'll do a hell of a lot better in 2004 than we did under Opes The Dopes.

Sorry mate, but I think that is wishful thinking. Assuming that the Board terminates Anderson's contract when he returns from the UK, it will be anything other than straight forward. Contract law is a complex and expensive area of law and even the most clear and simple termination can strike all manner of hurdles. Most will hinge on the wording of the contract itself and we are not privy to those details. If it is as simple as making the semis 2 years out of 3, and I have no doubt it would couched heavily in legalese, then the club would be in breach. This means not just the $400k, but the $400k for each of the next two years as well, plus costs, plus probable damages for the impact on his professional reputation.

A lot of what we've heard about the club's actions suggests that they have actively undermined his position as coach and, even if the contract is terminated technically in terms of the law, the surrounding circumstances may mean that such a termination is unjust. That the club has engineered a situation to avoid the contract. The onus of proof would rest on the club as the one seeking to void the contract and I can see that this will become messy, expensive and protracted.

For the anti-Anderson faction, the best result would be for Anderson to decide that he has had enough of coaching and retire. For the club to accept this and let him out of the remaining year of his contract. Anything less than this is likely to be disastrous for the club.

Eskimo, I honestly don't think it's wishful thinking. With a degree in Business (Industrial Relations) and plenty of experience in hiring, firing, union disputes and unfair dismissal claims, I have every belief that the club could march him out the door with nothing more than a kick in the bum.

Craig Coleman had a contract. Gooooorrrne! Plenty of other coaches have had contracts and still been punted. Anderson has breached his, several times. If he wants to argue, in court, that the club 'engineered an environment' that encouraged him to behave poorly, the club has PLENTY of witnesses who can be called upon to testify how Anderson treated staff, players and others poorly.

Players who could be called include the likes of Mellor, Campbell, Treister, Graham, Franze and Gibson. These guys have all been treated to the infamous Anderson treatment, the KING of 'engineering' detrimental environments.

Staff include those present when Dean was dumped from the 25 in a bar at the club. Not to mention, of course, Theo Burgess, Greg Peirce and Ando's BOSS, GM Steve Rogers, who was called a 'low c--t' by our potential plaintiff.

If Anderson wants to take it to the Courtroom, that's fine by me. He'll get nailed. Sure, there will be a bit of bloodletting, and more unwanted embarrassment for the whole club, but this will be short-term. Better to win in a biffo than compromise ourselves from here to Season 2006.

Seriously, could YOU call a senior colleague a 'low c--t' in a heated argument and still expect to have a job tomorrow? What about abusing a customer (in Ando's case, a ref) with all manner of poor language?

He'll go quietly, I'd bet my house on it. Because he knows he's gone.

Sorry Shark. Your argument is a little one-sided me thinks...

Isn't it the head coach's job to drop players who in his opinion are under-performing? And in my experience you can call your boss whatever you like and get away with it if they have earned said comment.

As for a abusing the ref... again, all in a day's work for a head coach. And if it had earned the Sharks a better shake of future descisions, then we'd be hailing him a hero.

You sound like you've got loads of experience, but it doesn't sound to me like you've got an open and shut case at all.

Well, we can just agree to disagree Nages. I'm open minded enough, I gave Ando plenty of time to prove that he was on the right track, but his outburst after Jarrad was sent packing was hypocritical, childish and, for this little black, white and blue duck, the last straw.

Is it not the job of senior club officials (Rogers, Burgess, etc) to offer contracts to players as they see fit? Why the tantrum when it's Jarrad copping a raw deal? They were doing their job, as such the outburst from Ando was clearly unwarranted.

And in the Year of the Official, he was lucky he wasn't banned from the remainder of the 2003 season by the NRL for his Anti-Ref tunnel and press conference outbursts.

We were all ready to give it to Brownie and other coaches when they made huge dopes of themselves through the year. We can't then take the high moral ground when our own Head Coach drags the game into the gutter.

Souths paid Coleman out.

The players you mentioned were all released at their request.

I agree, Shark, those were ugly incidents.

But I think we knew that's what we were buying two years ago. It's not like Ando has a squeaky-clean reputation. He ruffles feathers and does things his way. To be shocked when he starts ruffling feathers and doing things his way is a little naïve.

But yes – agree to disagree. I think no matter which side of this fence we're sitting on, everyone’s had a gut-full of this little soap opera.

Ain't that the truth! Still, I guess that's what we get for sticking solid for 37 years and counting...No matter, I'll still buy the season ticket and curse at having to pay $3 for a can of bloody warm pepsi. Maybe that's the problem! Maybe if a few of us DIDN'T stick so solid, things would get done a little differently at Captain Cook Drive.

Funnily enough I've been thinking the very same thing myself...

I wonder why they wanted a release?

For goodness sake we have been over all those issues over and over again. Why do you want to drag them up every opportunity? Get over it.

I am over it. I'm just reminding people what happened since their memories of it seem a little foggy. :)

I think people will be VERY surprised at what transpires in the last week of November this year / first week of December, regarding our coach for next season.

Geez I hate it when someone tells us we'll be surprised, and then doesn't ruin the surprise for us! So frustrating!!! :p

Seriously though, after this whole silly charade, I don't think anything would surprise me. Unless they bring in Craig Coleman...
