Another Eden Park story

Not sure if it's been mentioned and I'm not trying to argue for Eden Park but the Manly game looked fantastic on TV. Aside from the fact that it was a beautiful day, Eden Park appears to let in more light and perhaps the camera setup is better. No other game in NZ or Oz in 2012 looked like that one imo - was quite unusual.

Eden Park looks good when filled but how many times have the Warriors played infront of 40K plus at home? Mt Smart has a better view from the seats but EP is a better ground and closer to the city

WTF is wrong with this country ?!?!

Let me get this right, apparently it is a great idea to get rid of a Speedway track with 80 years history, and turn that into a cricket venue, while getting rid of a league venue to build a speedway there, when there is another speedway 5mins down the road.

If it were me, I would be telling the whinging residents around Western Springs to get f'ed, that place has been there far longer than them, and the speedway stays there. From that point, the decision about Mt Smart is in the hands of the Warriors, if they decide to move then build a cricket ground there.

To me it seems ridiculous to spend money building 2 new stadiums (Turning Mt Smart into Speedway and WS into cricket) when there is only a need to build 1

on those cold, wet and dreary Saturday nights or Sunday afternoons, they'll never get more than 10,000 at Eden Park.

BH, interesting comment, "the decision about Mt Smart is in the hands of the Warriors". I get the feeling its really not. Am I right in assuming both Eden Park and Mt Smart are Auckland City Council owned venues? I dare say they'd make the choice about what contracts are offered where in Auckland. I also don't think the NRL are going to come out and support the Warriors if they wanted to stay at Mt Smart, it seems to me that smaller tribal grounds are being eliminated under current ground selection strategies. You've got Souths at Homebush, I believe the Tigers have talked about going to the SFS, Canterbury playing at Homebush... I wonder when we'll get to a point of almost adopting the AFL strategy of centralising games even here in Sydney.

Yeah fair point, what I guess I mean is in terms of what's required in a stadium, rugby and league are the same, whereas cricket, speedway etc have completely different requirements in a stadium and both need to be purpose built to fulfill their needs

In the whole article, it is the Western Springs bit that gets my back up the most, a whining minority getting there way over something that was there well before they moved into the area

In any of those options, there is a massive amount of unnecessary work involved and a lot of people needlessly effected. It irks me a bit more after what has happened to my cricket club down here in CHCH copping an absolute shafting at the moment due to the want of an international venue

Yeah the NRL want the teams playing out of 3-4 Stadiums in Sydney which is absolutely crazy IMO

People should be able to call a hotline to complain about Western Springs, except When they "press 1" to make a complaint, the line goes dead.

Also, as my missus' dad pointed out to me yesterday, whenever there's a concert at the Springs those people around the top are the first to erect temporary seating and invite their mates around for a free show.

I did the trek over to Mt Smart in 2011.

It ain't a bad stadium, but it is in an ordinary part of town.

It would be like Sydney having its main stadium in Fairfield.

The Warriors won't fill EP even if they are a top 2 side for 3-4 years and win a premiership. They could pull a crowd of 40K if winning.
A $50m upgrade of Mt Smart to 30-35K would be the best option.

I don't think Eden Park would be the worst option, I think an average of 20,000 per game is achievable by 2017 if more games were played at Eden Park. It would probably cost more than 30-35k as some of the stands at Mt. Smart are run down and said to be close to unsafe in the coming years. I don't disagree that 10,000 at Eden Park would look ridiculous but I think moving some of the lower drawing games to North Harbour Stadium could be another option. Or as some other clubs do move games to places like Dunedin, Chricstchurch, Hamilton against teams like the Raiders or the Cowboys.

They'd have to start winning.. last seasons figures surprised me though.

Where ?, the East stand is basically new, the South stand is only temporary and the West stand is solid.

Or as some other clubs do move games to places like Dunedin, Chricstchurch, Hamilton against teams like the Raiders or the Cowboys.

That would totally destroy their member base. Like it or not, members are/were promised 12 home games at the home ground. That's what we pay for.
This year the club has kept the price of subscription the same, but the number of games are less.
Wellington is not a home game for members.

EP is a great place to watch cricket.

ozbash, where is this so called promise that you ramble on about 12 home games in Auckland? That's certainly not the case in the conditions that I've seen. Just want to wade through that and see what is actually truth here.

Well, I remember Mr Scurrah stating on the Radio they couldn't take Homes games away from Auckland due to legal requirements with the Council...and all of a sudden, they can (like the other NRL clubs do).
Has it really changed, or does he just forget saying that?;-)
