Anthony Quinn - defensive specialist?

Why do I keep hearing about Anthony Quinn being a "defensive specialist"? When and where did this myth start? Was it when he was being caught woefully out of position in the City/Country match, allowing City to score two of the easiest tries you'll ever see and get back in the match? Or when he was falling off tackle after tackle while playing for the Knights and Storm?

Deadset, I heard it again last night and I can't work it out for the life of me. He was terrible defensively in the City/Country match, and has generally been caught out of position more times than I care to remember at club level.

Can anyone shed some light onto why the media see it so differently?

Matthew Johns started talking him up on behalf of his employer and he knew that he was a average winger with decent attacking skills. The defensive specialist tag is one people tend to just let slide even when it is a sham as in Quinns case. The myth was perpetuated when morons like the Queef tagged on because he is a Newcastle boy originally.

The fact he is being touted as an Origin winger when he cannot read a line in defense is laughhable. But it is nothing new. I mean FFS Stevens thought Grothe should play Origin this year.

Maybe because he is able to rush in and shut down a centre effectively (like Steve Turner). Both Storm wingers do this and usually do it well. For the life of me, why cant the other teams see this and grubber behind them is beyond comprehension, or use a cutout pass or some sort of decoy to isolate these guys.

FWIW I think both Turner and Quinn are very average wingers, and when Warren Smith mentioned Quinn as a SOO candidate I had to laugh. Solid wingers, yes. Origin candidates.....no.

When someone can't attack, they're called a 'defensive' player, regardless.

No surprise. He's a strong dummy-half runner with zero flair. Perfect winger for the modern Origin snoozefest.

Well I guess you guys are all the experts.

What does Bellamy know? Nothing - which is why he's now got Quinn in his team for Origin.

Seriously - those who watch Storm games closely (as opposed to those who watch sparingly, and with most likely a negative frame of reference in the first place) - would know that Anthony Quinn has been an absolute revelation for the Storm this year.

In nearly every game, Quinn has been in the top 3. Had it not been for Slater's form - Quinn would be our form player in the backline.

He's not flashy, he's not a Jarred Hayne or Nathan Merrit type - all flash and no substance - he's tough, reliable and gutsy. He's not scared to make the hard yards smashing it up the middle, rarely misses a tackle at critical times and has no problem fiding the tryline when it matters.

I'm a diehard Maroon supporter - and I think he'll be a real danger - both in terms of stopping QLD from scoring - and in attack. Pound for pound, he'll easily be one of the strongest players in the NRL.

I'm probably the most biased storm supporter on this board and i can honestly say that is a lot of crap.

then you're also a blind storm supporter... Quinn has been great this year. Covered for a lot of defensive errors from Chambers too. He's been outstanding. I'd have rathered he didn't get picked though, as we are very light on during origin.

I think youve been a bit harsh on Lowdowns summary Billy, its pretty accurate. Though I dont think the Maroons will be worrying about him to much offensively.

Quinns a very good winger whos best assest is his strength, but I have to laugh when he gets into open space, he looks lost.

If he cut the niggle out of his game, I'd like him a lot more. As Badge said last night on the MNF pre-show, just cut it out & play footy

actually i'd take mcmanus over quinn too tbh... and i've been quite the quinny advocate in the past.

mind you i think quinn has a yard or 2 of pace over jimmy mac... and quinn is hardly a speedster.

Quinns job will be to frustrate the maroons backs which he will do well. he is a very strong uncompromising winger though who'll charge up the middle of the ruck no matter who's there and wont wait around for soemone else to have a go. I think he's atcually a good pick, especially if you're tying to frustrate folau/inglis/hodges/tate

Well - who has been in better form than Quinn from round 1 to round 9? Certainly Slater - no doubt. Possibly Folau a game here or there - but Quinn has been CONSISTENTLY great.

Look at his average metres, hit ups, tackles/mistackles and tries scored. Also - if you do watch our games - look at the way he comes in and closes the attacking play down, nearly every time.

If only Will Chambers or Matty Geyer in his day could do that! Quinn is better than anyone in coming up and not missing the tackle.

Mark my words - Quinn will not dissappoint. He's made for Origin - Bellamy knows it, Andrew Johns knows it. You'll know it too when its all done and dusted.
