You need to access the game on your phone because it's such a shit ground to watch the game live at.

This will really improve the atmosphere of going to the game, with everyone looking down at their phones...

I'm meh to this. What ANZ need to spend money on is a league half time siren and f**k that afl one off.

I'd rather they spend it on making the stadium rectangular..

This is the ultimate fantasy, which I share. A proper, real, 80-100K bodies rectangular stadium implementing world's best practice.
Sadly, won't see it in my lifetime I fear.

Right now it might be but as technology advances, the way we consume content will change.

Just look at Google glasses.

Exactly. Imagine being at the game and being able to watch a instant replay of something that has just happened on the field that hasn't been shown on the big screen. A potential knock on, or watching a player cam to see how little Mitchell Pearce is doing on the field. The opportunities are endless

 @ all the people saying "people will watch their phones instead now"... People use their phones at the footy already, generally checking social media (Twitter/FB) and sharing their experience - usually with some sort of photo. Great for pre-game, halftime, fulltime... even in between plays to see what others think of a play that just happened or a refs decision.

It hardly replaces the game or means people aren't watching the game - it's helping enhance the experience.

I think people will now use their phones LESS - as we all use data so much now, the lines become so busy and you can barely even get data. Now people can get on and check it, post a photo, imessage a mate and put their phones away. Rather than sit there for an hour trying to get a connection.

I know at Suncorp its a disaster, but better since 4g has come out (less people with 4g phones). And the times I have been at ANZ its been awful too - never been to a crowd of less than 70k at ANZ, though.

That's another valid point. With nobody struggling to get online anymore, people will be able to use and store their phone quicker.

That's what i'm wondering though. How useful is it *during* games? Wouldn't that serve as a distraction from the on-field stuff?

Would that be because the NFL has a tonne of stoppages

I thought NFL was one big stoppage where they occasionally broke out in a game.

Went to a meeting at Telstra today and got a bit of a sneak peak at some of the ideas they are planning with this product so thought I'd update the tread... Providing it can actually handle the load its going to be freaking awesome.

They are going to have full control of their own broadcasting, so no longer tied to what the TV feed is showing like they are currently. At first it will mean something as simple as your mobile showing a replay of every important play, regardless of whether channel 9 decides they want to show it (how many times do they just choose not to show a replay after a penalty or knock on, for example). It will also move towards things like targeted player cams, and viewer's choice camera angles. I would be particularly be interested in a focused ruck cam so that while at the game you can see whats going on in the play the ball.

The obivous stuff they already mentioned like player stats during the game, social media feeds, ordering food etc were all spoken about as well, but it was interesting how they were talking about presenting them. As an example instead of just bringing up a list of player stats, you might point your phone's camera at a player and have his stats populate the screen, or point it at a food stall and bring up a menu for ordering.

Going to be bloody fantastic.

As an aside, they also mentioned that they have invested a tonne of money for the 2014 season into improving their NRL app streaming capabilities, so hopefully the feeds are more stable and higher res for the coming year.
