Actually gave Panthers a good contest, went 18-0 up before Penrith came to life. They had the talent but their sense of belief left them at Olympic Park.

God, i shutter to think what the 2002 Raiders look liked. Troubling times.
Super coach Elliott at helm... Ugly.

Up until Round 12 I thought the Dragons would be a lock for top four, they probably had the best defence up until that point too.

Just didn't have the depth this year to cope with those injuries.

I've always been in favour of bringng back the top 5. Will never happen for commercial reasons, but it's the only way of preventing dross regularly appearing in the finals.

top 6 would be ok (it can be called the "top 6 alien system" :) )

week 1:
team 1 and team 2 have the week off
(game a) team 4 plays at home against team 5 (loser eliminated)
(game b) team 3 plays at home against team 6 (loser eliminated)

week 2:
(game c) team 1 plays at home against the winner of game a (loser eliminated)
(game d) team 2 plays at home against the winner of game b (loser eliminated)

week 3 (grand final):
(game e) winner of game c vs winner of game d

i wouldn't say they were the worst team to make the finals, but in 1996 not many thought the magpies were going to make the finals. that was the 3rd time they made the finals in the 1990s, and many expected the sharks to easily beat the magpies in the quarter final (at parra stadium), but the magpies came very close to beating them

i was only 16 back then and i was on the south hill (the end furthest from parra leagues club) with my old man. they didn't have seats behind the sticks at parra stadium in those days

I am amazed that the 1998 Bulldogs team hasn't been mentioned 1,000 times by now. That team was f**king pitiful and it ended up making the GF

After 18 rounds they'd won 7 and lost 11 - twice against the bloody Rams, who were absolute gash.

They went on to defeat 6 teams in a row at the back end of the season to fall into the Finals in seventh or eighth.

The team in the GF was

1. Rod Silva
2. Gavin Lester
3. Shane Marteen
4. Willie Talau
5. Daryl Halligan
6. Corey Hughes
7. Craig Polla-Mounter
8. Darren Britt
9. Jason Hetherington
10. Steve Price
11. Tony Grimaldi
12. Robert Relf
13. Travis Norton

Bench, Steve Reardon, Glen Hughes, Troy Stone, David Thompson

There are probably only two or three quality players in that entire team

It was pretty much Carige that got them there.

Unfair call there....that team was pretty mentally tough (and Im not a dogs fan).

Silva, Polla-Mounter, Britt, Hetherington, and Price were pretty damn good players. Talau, Grimaldi and Norton had pretty darg good finals games as well. 10 times more mentally tough than the 2015 dragons team.

I won't say Parra were mentally weak at that time either....sometimes, teams can just be unlucky.

They aren't even the worst side on this year's finals. They would knock souffs over.

I know !
There are about a dozen teams that have let in more points that them.
They don't even have the worst for and against in the top eight !
Dragon bashing purely because they didn't get the spoon that the haters were wishing for !
Stupid thread !

Canberra 2002 may have had the worst record, but who had the worst line-up in a final?

Can anybody compete with the Broncos 2007?

1. Darius Boyd
2. Steve Michaels
3. Nick Emmett
4. Justin Hodges
5. Alwyn Simpson
6. Sam Thaiday
7. Shane Perry
8. Dane Carlaw
9. Mick Roberts
10. Petero Civoniceiva
11. Corey Parker
12. Brad Thorn
13. Ben Hannant

14. Greg Eastwood
15. Nick Kenney
16. Ian Lacey
17. Clifford Manua

And somehow, that looks much better than it did on paper. Can't note how young some of those players were or the injuries they were dealing with.

Broncs fans are spoiled. There are like 9 internationals in that side.

Raiders 2008 that played the Sharks was pretty poor compared to that:
Milne, Purts, Monas, Best, Chalk, Campo, Buttriss (yes as halfback), Logan, Hinchcliffe, Tilse, Plum, Picker, Tongue
Bench: Kelly, Miller, Costigan, Thurling

Got carved up by Pomeroy.

They nearly missed the finals altogether having been absolute rubbish for the vast majority of the year. The cobbled together some rubbish wins and then got on a roll.

They still played terrible football. They might have been mentally tough, but I reckon there's as much talent in this current Dragons side. Or lack thereof.

The difference is lambretta - dogs teams thrive in finals. I'd put our finals record in the 90s through to today up against any other team and I don't think we would be far off the pace.

We are built to compete and be f**king mongrels. In that team you had tough pricks like True Grit Britt and Hetherington. Not a soft c**k in sight

Dogs of war if you will.
