Dufty ready to fire after Dragons back him to be their No.1

St George Illawarra fullback Matt Dufty is ready to hit the ground running with a clear head when full pre-season training resumes next week after being reassured his future in the Red V had never been in doubt.

Dufty and Dragons director of rugby league pathways and list management, Ian Millward, felt the need on Friday to address reports the club had been prepared to release the 22-year-old from the remaining year of his contract to make way for Jarryd Hayne next season.

The Penshurst junior, who played all 26 games for St George Illawarra last season, had spoken to club officials and was told the Dragons had never considered trying to moving him on.

"I had a chat to the senior staff at the club and they have assured me of my spot at the club so I am keen to rip in," Dufty said.

"The club reassured me that if anything like that was going to happen they would let me know before it came out in the papers which is good to hear. I have got a good relationship with the staff and the club and I am looking forward to ripping in with the boys."

Dufty told spot is safe at Dragons

Millward reaffirmed Dufty had always been a part of St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor’s plans for next season.

"The speculation and misinformation surrounding Matt’s future has been disappointing," Millward said.

"Matt is contracted for 2019 and will definitely be a part of our squad next year. There has not been any internal discussion that suggested otherwise."

Five key matchups of the Dragons' 2019 draw

It is understood the Dragons had been considering a release to utility Kurt Mann to return to Newcastle next season but only if they signed Hayne.

However, that move now appears unlikely and Mann is expected to attend pre-season training in Wollongong on Monday when the majority of the St George Illawarra squad begin their preparations for next season.

Dufty has been among the less experienced players who began their pre-season earlier and he said was looking forward to the full squad resuming training next week.

"It has been pretty tough, it has been a shock to the system after a long break and getting away to come back and get straight into running but it is good to see all the boys again," he told Dragons.com.au.

"The last couple of years I have been one of the young kids so it is good to come back and try to push all the boys who are struggling with their first or second pre-season and help them through it."

Pereira wings it to top of Dragons pecking order

Just four months ago St George Illawarra winger Jordan Pereira was resigned to needing to find an alternative career; now he is the No.1 specialist winger at the Dragons as they step up preparations for next season.

Pereira, 25, made his NRL debut in the round-19 clash with North Queensland on July 21 after an injury to Papua New Guinea international Nene Macdonald but until then he feared his dream of playing in the Telstra Premiership would never come to fruition.

After joining St George Illawarra midway through the 2017 season, Pereira's ambition during the last pre-season was to play in an NRL trial but that opportunity didn't arise and despite being the leading try scorer in the Intrust Super Premiership there was no interest from rival clubs.

However, he got his chance when Macdonald was ruled out of the Cowboys clash and did not miss another NRL match for the Dragons.

"I thought I was going to have to dust off the old steel cap boots midway thought last season because my manager was saying 'I am not too sure what is going on next year' as there wasn't any offers from any other clubs," Pereira said.

"That was before I played first grade and I was really worried about what I was going to do next year. I thought I was going to have to go back to work and then after a few injuries I got a chance and I signed straight away.

"The opportunity came and I am just really grateful that I got that because now I am here today and I get the chance to get more of that and get more experience."

With Macdonald having been released to the Cowboys and New Zealand Test winger Jason Nightingale retiring at the end of the season, Pereira is now the most experienced winger at St George Illawarra and he recently re-signed for a further two years.

However, he isn't taking anything for granted and is ready to compete for a wing berth with new recruits, Jonus Pearson from Brisbane and Fijian Mikaele Ravalawa, who was Canberra's under 20s player of the year in 2017.

Dragons coach Paul McGregor will also want to find a place in the backline for boom rookie Zac Lomax, who represented the Prime Ministers XIII in Papua New Guinea and the Junior Kangaroos against the Junior Kiwis after impressing in the finals matches against Brisbane and South Sydney.

"There are some good replacements that the recruitment officers have gathered up," Pereira said. "I was out injured when our reserve grade played against Mikaele but I watched the game and he is a freak athlete.

"Me and Jonus Pearson played against each other heaps in the Queensland Cup, we always marked each other and he is a handful."

Five key matchups of the Dragons' 2019 draw

Former Broncos forward Korbin Sims is St George Illawarra's main signing and he is viewed as a ready-made replacement for Leeson Ah Mau, who has returned to New Zealand to play for the Warriors.

However, second-rower Jacob Host is determined to win a regular spot in the top squad after limited chances last season.

Host is recovering from post-season surgery after dislocating his shoulder in the round-17 loss to Melbourne and returning in round 24 against Canterbury.

The 22-year-old is expected to resume full training after the Christmas break.

"I was starting to get a bit of momentum with form and minutes so it was frustrating to get that injury but I was proud of myself for working my way back into the team before the end of the season," Host said.

"At the end of the year I sat down with Mary and we set some goals for this coming season. That's one of the main ones; to be playing consistent footy and to be consistently playing first grade. I want to establish myself and make that step up."

NSW Origin prop Paul Vaughan also expects to be able to resume running after breaking his foot in a late season training incident as he was preparing for a comeback from a syndesmosis injury suffered in the round-21 match against the Warriors.

Tariq Sims sets NRL challenge for brother Korbin at Dragons
Dragons Den
Tariq Sims has welcomed brother Korbin ‘home’ by issuing a challenge.

The Dragons forward was one of the great success stories of 2018, breaking into the winning NSW State of Origin team and steamrolling Korbin’s former club Brisbane with three tries in the 48-18 elimination final win.

But now reunited in Wollongong, close to their family home in Gerringong, Sims had warned Korbin will have to earn his place in the team, alongside the representative players like Paul Vaughan, Jack de Belin and Tyson Frizell.

“Korbin’s focus should be fighting for a bench spot and focusing on what he can bring to the team,” he said.

“I know what he can bring to the team, but it’s up to him to show Mary what he can bring and add to our strike power.

“Korbin is a really great defender and I’m pretty excited to see him and Jack de Belin standing next to each other and cut someone in half.

“He needs to earn his stripes before he can push for a starting role, he might have to sit on the pine for a while.”

While Korbin’s signing boosts the already impressive forward stocks, Tariq said he hoped the Dragons could secure another wing or centre before next year’s campaign begins.

Nene Macdonald left to join the Cowboys, while Jason Nightingale retired and NRL prospect Reuben Garrick moved to Manly and Patrick Herbert released.

It leaves 2018 debutant Jordan Pereira and utility Kurt Mann, who has been linked to Newcastle, are among the leading candidates to play on the wing, or shifting Zac Lomax or Euan Aitken from the centres.

Junior Kiwis representative Steven Marsters or Fijian signing Mikaele Ravalawa are also in the squad but untested at NRL level.

“One or two (new signings) would be nice,” Tariq said.

“I think the club is in a really great spot, we’ve got a big opportunity to improve on last year.” In a remarkable family situation, Korbin is eligible to play for Queensland, while Tariq made his debut for NSW this year.

Older brother Ashton played for Fiji and sister Ruan is a NSW and Jillaroos representative.

Tariq said he was yet to discuss the finals win over the Broncos with Korbin.

“We haven’t really talked about it,” he said.

“I guess if he gets chirpy I might keep it in the back pocket.”

The Dragons, without Gareth Widdop, were knocked out by Souths 13-12 in the semi-finals.

Reunited Sims brothers happy to step on each other's toes
Author
Brad Walter NRL.com Senior Reporter

walterbrad-head.png

It was an early morning swim in Wollongong last week that convinced St George Illawarra forward Tariq Sims how much he was looking forward to playing alongside brother Korbin next season.

"It was just as the sun was coming up and I thought, 'we haven't done this since we were teenagers'," Sims said.

"It was one of those moments that made you think about the times when we used to go for early morning surfs before school. I just thought 'wow, it has been so long since we have done something like this', so it was nice."

Growing up in Gerringong and playing juniors for the Illawarra Steelers, it seemed inevitable that Tariq and Korbin would advance through the ranks to St George Illawarra's NRL team.

Korbin was a ball boy for the Dragons at the age of 13, when elder brother Ashton played for the club and coach Paul McGregor was a trainer.

However, it has been a decade since he trained at WIN Stadium and the 26-year-old has never pulled on a Red V jersey.

Dragons' top five tries of 2018

"I've got a lot of fond memories of this place, I used to watch Ashton play here as well and now I've got a chance to wear the same jersey as my two brothers," Korbin said.

"I always thought I was going to be up in Brisbane for a while but obviously that didn't work out and I have got an opportunity here now that hopefully I will be able to do the club and the fans of the Red V proud, and do my family proud as well."

I am sure if you hang around training you will see some brotherly love

Tariq Sims on brother Korbin
With the Dragons enjoying a successful 2018 season in which they led the Telstra Premiership until round 16 and had four forwards in the victorious NSW Origin team, Korbin said his decision to join the club was for football reasons but his family connection made it an easy choice.

"It was a business decision and it has made it easier coming to a club like this, where they had a great season this year and obviously my mates and family are still here so it was an easy decision in the end," he said.

"It's been good so far, being back near the beach and with mum and dad only half-an-hour down the road so it has been an easy transition."

While Tariq knew that Korbin was in the Dragons sights after being quizzed by McGregor about his brother, the 28-year-old Blues second- rower only learned that he had signed when told by the club that they were going to make an announcement.

They had previously played together for Brisbane, Newcastle and Fiji but there was no love lost when Tariq ironed out Korbin in last season's elimination final and the competitiveness between the brothers is expected to be a feature at Dragons training.

"I am sure if you hang around training you will see some brotherly love but it is just one of those things where we push each other's buttons," Tariq said.

181115-training_0111.jpg

"We like the same things and we dislike similar things so it is only a matter of time before we step on each other's toes.

"What brings the best out in people is someone who is going to push you in every training session. That is what I am going to do and that is what he will do as well."

Korbin is an ideal replacement for New Zealand forward Leeson Ah Mau, who has returned home to join the Warriors but Tariq warned he would have to fight for a position in a forward pack brimming with talent and experience.

"Korbin's focus should be just fighting for a bench spot and focusing on what he can bring to the team," he said.

"I know what he can bring to the team, but it's up to him to show Mary what he can bring to the team and add to our strike power.

"Korbin is a really great defender and I'm pretty excited to see him and Jack de Belin standing next to each other and cut someone in half.

"He needs to earn his stripes before he can push for a starting role, he has got to bide his time and he might have to sit on the pine for a little bit but I know how competitive he is so he will be pushing for a starting spot for sure."

WOMEN'S RUGBY LEAGUE

Not just for the boys: Sergis fronts new junior league campaign

Jillaroos centre and St George Illawarra Dragons NRLW star Jessica Sergis is thrilled the next generation of girls playing rugby league have a whole competition of women's players to look up to.

Sergis has been selected as the face of the NRL's push for increased junior participation on the back of her performances in the inaugural Holden Women’s Premiership.

The NRL is looking to boost female participation number in junior ranks and Sergis, who picked up the game at age six, says she was thankful the game's no longer seen as a sport for boys.

"My junior club was the Coogee Randwick Wombats," Sergis said.

"I was six years old when we started playing football. We're a big rugby league family so my dad was a coach at the time.

"All I really remember is running around with the boys and having so much fun. I know the game's just going to grow from now."

Sergis confident female participation will grow

The NRL announced in September that the number of women playing rugby league had risen by 29% since 2017 and doubled since 2015.

"I'm so happy for them that they get to look up to us women now, they don't have to look up to the men like we did," Sergis said.

"I think the pathways are going to get bigger and we're going to get so many girls playing the sport."

The NRL launched its new junior rugby league campaign on Wednesday featuring 22 boys and girls from 19 different grassroots clubs, including the sons of rugby league legends Andrew Johns and Michael Ennis.

"It's a different league to what you see on TV," said the NRL's NRL Head of Football – Participation, Pathways and Game Development, Luke Ellis.

Junior League National Registration Launch

"And that's why hearing the enjoyment rugby league brings these kids in their own words is so important.

"There's nothing more enjoyable than seeing kids having fun, running around with their mates on a rugby league field.

"We have to ensure that everyone, especially those new to the game, get to experience just how fun, safe and friendly being involved in junior rugby league is."

Junior rugby league registrations are now open nationally, with more details on local junior clubs and age-specific rule variations available via www.playrugbyleague.com.

Dragons' Steve Marsters inspired by Tigers' NRL cousin Esan
Local Sport
Steven Marsters would look at his cousin Esan – a ball-running, try-scoring, goal-kicking brute – with envy and inspiration.

Winging it: Dragons back Steve Marsters. Picture: NRL Imagery/Gregg Porteous

At the Wests Tigers, Esan is an emerging NRL powerhouse centre, having played 37 games since his debut last year. Esan has now played five Tests for New Zealand, scoring three times.

Three years his junior, Steven is headlong into his second pre-season, the door to a start in the big time creaking open after the departure of Nene Macdonald and Jason Nightingale.

The Dragons need a solution to their lack of depth and strike outwide, Marsters needs an opportunity.

After Esan moved from New Zealand to Sydney, all Steven wanted to do was follow his cousins path.

Then his moment came.

During a New Zealand indigenous tournament, then Dragons recruitment boss Peter Mulholland overhead Marsters behind the tryline, urging to his teammates to lift after conceding a try.

An hour later, Mulholland was chatting with Marsters parents about a career with St George Illawarra, impressed by his attitude to the game.

So he packed up and started with the Steelers’ Harold Matthews team and then two years at Thirroul, before coming into the full-time NRL squad.

“I always looked up to (Esan), I was attached to him as a kid,” Marsters told the Mercury this week.

“When he moved to Australia, I would say to mum, I want to move over and stay with him. And she kept saying, the only way you’re going to get over there is get a contract.

“Sure enough, when Peter Mulholland approached me, it just worked out.”

Playing in the under 20s last year, Marsters moved into the St George Illawarra NSW Premiership team.

Marsters worked closely with Jordan Pereira, who broke into the Dragons lineup last year. Earlier in the week, NSW representative forward Tariq Sims said he hoped the Dragons landed “one or two” signings to boost their backline stocks.

Coach Paul McGregor’s biggest headache will come regarding wing selections, after losing more than 350 games experience in Macdonald and Nightingale.

But Sims was also quick to acknowledge the potential of Marsters to follow Pereira into the NRL ranks.

“From what I’ve seen of him, he’s doing everything right, he just needs to find that extra 10 per cent and get his chance,” Sims said.

“You look at Jordan, he finally got his crack halfway through the year and you won’t find a harder worker than Jordan.

“He’s such a strong carrier of the ball. Sometimes his defensive reads aren’t the best, but he really makes up for it with his effort levels.

“I think with another pre-season (Pereira’s) going to go to another level and I’m excited to see what he can achieve.”

The Dragons play the Charity Shield against the Rabbitohs in Mudgee on March 2, before opening the season against the Cowboys on March 16.

Marsters' Tigers influence

St George Illawarra Dragons young gun Steven Marsters hasn't put a time frame on it, but one day soon plans to take out one of his own in the NRL.

Marsters is the cousin of Esan – the Wests Tigers centre coming off a huge second season of NRL that saw him rewarded with New Zealand Test honours.

Despite being three years Esan's junior, Marsters said he is constantly attempting to one-up his cousin no matter the circumstances.

The two-time Junior Kiwis representative is currently undergoing his second full pre-season at the Dragons.

The 19-year-old was expected to see out the 2018 season in Jersey Flegg but ended up playing double the Intrust Super Premiership games than he did in the Under-20s.

"It would be a dream come true to play Esan in the NRL. Our grandad always told us that if we were to ever play each other to take off each other's heads," Marsters laughed.

"Esan and I love going at one another. Every time a family barbecue rolls around, you'll find us in the backyard going at each other.

"We try and beat one another at everything. If we're playing golf or tennis we'll be taking it seriously. It'll always end up in a fight.

"I have always wanted to play better than him and be better than him which is exactly how he looks at me. Our whole family sees that."

Friendly fire aside, Marsters's biggest influence is his older cousin.

Esan made his debut for New Zealand at June's Denver Test against England and has since represented the Kiwis five times.

The sight of Esan donning the black-and-white jumper for the first time left little doubt in Marsters' mind who he aspired towards.

"Seeing him go through all the hard yards as a kid to what he's achieving now, it makes me proud. When I saw him put on his first Kiwis jersey, I cried. That's how special Esan is to me," Marsters said.

"Esan has been my biggest influence. Everything that I know now is because of him. Seeing where he is now, it has played a huge role in my life.

"Watching him play for New Zealand over in the UK recently, and also against Australia, was a huge moment for me as well."

The St George Illawarra Dragons have named their Intrust Super Premiership and Jersey Flegg squads for the 2019 season.

Proving that once again that the Dragons are a development club, Jason Gillard, Jayden Morgan, Cooper Purcell, Juvilee Samiu and Matt Sheppard have made the transition from the Jersey Flegg into Mat Head's ISP squad for 2019.

Familiar faces such as Adam Clune, Ashley Nisbet, Pio Sokobalavu and Topiese Taufa remain in Head's ISP squad.

While the likes of Matthew Delbanco, Bailey Dickinson, Jiye Ellis, Luke Gale, Dante Lusio, Sam McCann, Tyler Moon, Matthew Nicholson, Shalom O'ofou, Shaun Sauni-Esau and Tyran Wishart remain in the Jersey Flegg squad from last year, the majority of the squad sees plenty of promotions from the St George and Illawarra Steelers' SG Ball squads.
