Ironman Graham deserves a spell

James Graham is facing an unfamiliar long lay-off. Picture: NRL Photos

JAMES Graham is a notable name on the Dragons current injury list, but Jeremy Latimore says there could be a silver lining to his absence - if the Dragons can stay in the finals frame over the next month.

Graham suffered a broken leg in his side's last-start loss to Cronulla and is facing the longest stint on the sideline due to injury in more than 450 top-flight games.

"He's a maniac that guy," Latimore said.

"One of the boys said the other day that this is the first time he'll miss more than three games since he's been playing top grade rugby league.

"It goes right back to St Helens in 2003 so it's obviously going to be tough for Jammer but it gives him a chance to freshen up and have a watch from the sideline.

"There's a lot of footy to be played while he's out but if we can string some wins together through this period, he comes back with enthusiasm and energy and we can hopefully look back at it as a good thing."

Family-friendly Sundays at Sydney Cricket Ground
Author

Sat 8 Jun 2019, 11:10 AM

Fans attending events at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sundays will enjoy cheaper prices on hero food and beverage items for less than $5 for the remainder of 2019, thanks to a commitment to 'Family Friendly Sundays' by the Sydney Cricket & Sports Grounds, Delaware North caterers and the teams who call the SCG home.

SCG Chief Executive Officer, Kerrie Mather said the decision to subsidise food and beverage costs was another customer service initiative to drive attendance at the SCG.

Together with recent initiatives such as WaitTime, SCG technology upgrade, family ticket deals and the new SCG app, the reduction in food and beverage costs, with many items less than $5, will be a welcome addition for sports fans.

"Sundays are traditionally a day when families get together and go to the footy, so by reducing our food and beverage prices, we hope that many more families will be able to cheer on their heroes and pack the stands at the SCG," Ms Mather said.

"We have partnered with our caterers, Delaware North, as well as the Sydney Swans, Sydney Roosters and St George Illawarra Dragons to deliver savings across a range of traditional footy fare – starting with this weekend’s AFL blockbuster when the Swans take on reigning premiers the West Coast Eagles."

The price reductions include $4.90 for hot chips, hotdogs and meat pies, and $4.30 for Mt Franklin Water.

Delaware North’s SCG general manager, Stuart Ford said: "We've significantly reduced the prices of some of our most popular offerings to specifically target families who choose the SCG as an entertainment option."

The commitment to 'Family Friendly Sundays' is warmly welcomed by the SCG's sports partners.

“The timing of this announcement couldn’t be better as our next home game is this Sunday against West Coast, so Sydney Swans fans can make the most of these offers from this weekend," Sydney Swans CEO Tom Harley said.

"Watching the Sydney Swans play at the SCG is an activity that brings families together and thanks to this initiative, along with free entry for kids to Swans games on Sundays, it will now be more affordable.

"We look forward to continuing to work with Sydney Cricket and Sports Grounds on ways to enhance the match-day experience for our members and supporters."

"This is a huge win for Sydney Roosters Members and supporters who head out to the SCG to enjoy Sunday Football throughout the remainder of 2019," said Roosters CEO Joe Kelly.

"Along with our Steggles $50 pre-purchase family ticket, this offer provides terrific value for families to attend our next home game against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs on Sunday, June 16.

"We applaud the Sydney Cricket and Sports Grounds for introducing this initiative across all codes involved in Sunday football games at the SCG for the remainder of the year," added Mr Kelly.

"The SCG's decision to revise their pricing around food and beverages is a great initiative for which they are to be congratulated," Dragons Chief Executive Brian Johnston said.

"It is something that I am sure our Red V members and fans who are planning to attend our Round 24 clash against the Wests Tigers will greatly appreciate."

The revised pricing will be implemented as of Sunday, June 9 and will be rolled out across all football events scheduled on Sundays for the remainder of 2019.

Hunt thrives with defensive mindset
Author
Tony Webeck NRL.com reporter

A singular defensive mindset not only drove Ben Hunt to play an active role in Queensland’s second-half comeback on Wednesday night but secured him the Maroons’ No.9 for the foreseeable future.

Hunt made his intentions clear with two strong defensive efforts in the opening set of the game and carried that focus through the entire 80 minutes, shooting out of the line to put shots on Blues debutant Payne Haas and climbing from the Suncorp Stadium turf following a desperate tackle on Angus Crichton in the dying seconds of the game.

All told the Dragons half made a game-high 53 tackles in Queensland’s 18-14 Game One triumph and now looks set to be become the long-term successor to legendary Maroons hooker Cameron Smith.

"I love playing in this team. Whether it's nine, seven, 14 or anywhere else I just want to be here,” Hunt told NRL.com.

"I just hope that every time I get an opportunity I can put my hand up and show the selectors that I deserve to be here. If No.9 is the spot they want me to play then I'll play it.”

When 19-year-old Haas made his Origin entry 22 minutes into the contest the sight of Hunt making a beeline for the Brisbane behemoth was the ultimate mismatch.

Conceding 15 centimetres and 31 kilograms, there was method to Hunt’s madness as he used his defensive intent to spark his own attacking performance that included a crucial 40/20 kick midway through the first half.

Match Highlights: Maroons v Blues

"I just didn't want to let him wind up too much,” Hunt said of his Haas approach. “The quicker I can get up on him the less pace he's got coming at me.

“That's how I try to approach the big boys. If I can get up before they start running too fast then I've got a better chance.

“My whole career I've felt like if I've started defending well in the game then I tend to play well in the game. That was my main focus going into it.

"I just felt like I was in the game a bit more [in the second half]. To be honest, the first half I just felt like I was tackling the whole time so I was a bit wrecked.

“I seemed to get into my groove a bit in the second half and find a bit of rhythm.”

Encouraged by coach Kevin Walters to run more in the second term, Hunt ultimately accrued 78 run metres and provided a spark from dummy-half that the likes of Cameron Munster, Daly Cherry-Evans and Kalyn Ponga then played off.

"Just run the ball Ben, that's what you're there for,” Walters said of his half-time instructions.

DCE warns partnership with Munster will only get better

"He got through the 80 minutes magnificently and everyone knows the belief that I have in Ben Hunt.

"I love him as a football player. He's tough, rugged, skilful and I thought he showed his real class in that second half.

"A couple of defensive plays that he pulled off and he got more active in the game.”

Greeted by eldest son Brady at full-time, Hunt also had two-month old baby Bowie in the stands for the first time, making his third win in his fifth Origin appearance the sweetest one thus far.

"It's the best feeling in the world, to see their face after the game,” Hunt said of having his two boys and wife Bridget in the stands and in the sheds after the game.

“He's starting to understand now what it is and starts cheering, it just makes it all a little bit more enjoyable.”

Lockwood recognised in 2019 Queen's Birthday Honours list

Former St George Illawarra Dragons, New South Wales Rugby League and National Rugby League chairman Warren Lockwood has been recognised in the 2019 Queen's Birthday Honours list where he was appointed as a Member of the Order of the Australia (AM).

Warren was recognised for his significant service to rugby league as an administrator, and to the community.

"It has been my honour and privilege to have played a role in the delivery of health services for the benefit of the St George Community and to also have had the opportunities to play a key role in the administration of rugby league across all levels of the game," he said.

"I am very grateful to receive this recognition. It is very humbling and whilst it is a personal award, it is something that I believe belongs to all my family – my wife Jan and children Gary and Sandra – whose support enabled me to have these opportunities."

Warren played a significant role in the delivery of health services for the benefit of the St George Community at both St George Public and Hurstville Community Hospitals for over three decades.

These roles helped begin his associated with rugby league as he was appointed to the board of St George Leagues Club in 1983. He would become chairman in 1990, going on to become the longest serving chairman of 22 years. Standing down in 2012, he later resigned from the board in 2018, after 35 years of service to the Leagues Club.

Warren also joined the board of the St George District Rugby League Club in 1988 when the Leagues Club assumed management of the local league. He became chairman in 1991 and was the club's delegate to the NSWRL, an organisation of which he later became chairman (1997) where he played a key role in unifying the game post the Super League War.

Warren was appointed as deputy chairman of the Australian Rugby League during this tumultuous time in rugby league history and was later elected the inaugural chairman of the NRL when it formed in 1998; a position he held for two years.

Warren's long service to the St George district club board and game-wide experience saw him appointed to join the St George Illawarra Dragons board in 2001, where he assumed the role of chairman of the joint-venture instantly. It would be a position he held for 16 years until his 2017 retirement.

Everyone at the St George Illawarra Dragons wish to congratulate Warren for his due recognition in the 2019 Queen's Birthday Honours list.

State of origin: Sims eyeing Blues recall as Dragons reboot season
Dragons Den
r0_0_3625_2473_w1200_h678_fmax.jpg

ON THE FLY: Tariq Sims. Picture: NRL Photos
DRAGONS hardman Tariq Sims is confident he remains in the NSW selection mix despite losing his hard-won Blues jumper for game one of this year's series.

Sims offered one of the great stories of 2018 where he was arguably the form forward of the competition over the opening 10 rounds.

It saw him called into Blues camp, where his 19th man for games one and two before making his debut in Origin III.

His start to 2019 has been slower in comparison, with the Dragons struggles seeing him left out of the Blues game-one 17, though coach Brad Fittler has assured the 29-year-old that he's not out of the frame.

"I talked to [Fittler] after the squad was announced and we had a private conversation," Sims said.

"I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm desperate to get into the Blues side but there's a few things that I need to tidy up in my game.

"I know what I need to work on, it's not going to happen overnight. I need to work hard, I need to keep stringing performances together not just sit in hope.

"I know what I need to do, it's just up to me to go out and do it and I think the last couple of weeks I'm starting to hit my straps again."

A wrist injury to David Klemmer will force one change for Fittler ahead of game two. The 18-14 loss could bring about more as the Blues look to keep the series alive, but Sims isn't expecting to see wholesale changes.

"It's going to be really hard to make changes in that Blues side," he said.

"I think the boys played outstanding the other night, I just think the bounce of the ball was going Queensland's way. For big Klem hurt his wrist and keep playing the way that he plays is unbelievable.

"That's what Origin's about, he's putting his teammates before himself. Sitting back the other night and watching them run around, I felt for the boys.

"I really wanted to be out there with them and take those tough carries and do that hard stuff you want impact players to do. That's the sort of role I want to be targeting, that impact player coming off the bench and blowing shoulders off."

Read more: Norman stars as Dragons snap losing streak

It's the role he's most likely to play should he earn a recall on the interchange, though the likes of Matt Lodge, Dale Finucane and Ryan Materson - the 19th man for game one - will all be in the frame.

"I'm a Blue through and through, if my job was to cut oranges and run the bottles out for the boys I'd take that on so hard," Sims said.

"That arena is something that, once you get a taste of it, you just want more and more. Whatever role there is for me to play I'd happily do it.

"It's up to Freddy and the selectors to think about, I just want to make sure I'm playing my best footy for the Dragons and doing all the things I can to take it out of their hands and force my way in."

For his part, Dragons coach Paul McGregor is more than confident Sims can play a role in the middle of the park if required.

"Tariq was there last year in that squad and if you're asking 'can he play Origin?' he's already done it so definitely, without a doubt he can," McGregor said.

"Is he capable of playing in the middle - yes he is. He's best suited on an edge, that's where he plays for his club, but if you ask anyone 'would you play in the middle in Origin?' they definitely would."

Tariq Sims' classy gesture for Bulldogs rival after monster hit
By WWOS staff

Tariq Sims' classy gesture for NRL rival
While it's a common occurrence across the NRL, we've still got to tip our hat to Dragons' enforcer Tariq Sims for this classy gesture towards Bulldogs' rival Jack Cogger after last Sunday's clash.

Sims pulled off a huge tackle on Cogger after the playmaker put a kick up in the first half of Monday's clash at ANZ Stadium.

http%3A%2F%2Fprod.static9.net.au%2Ffs%2Fe3f76ca4-e6ac-4dec-830f-ea587bd41c98

The first half clash. (FOX Sports)
Replays showed that Sims’ shoulder came into contact with Cogger’s chin which could be considered careless and high.

Cogger struggled to get to his feet before stumbling and falling over.

The Bulldogs half went off for his HIA test before being ruled out for the remainder of the contest.

And it seems the incident stayed with Sims for the entire clash, with the forward paying the youngster a visit after the game to check on his welfare.

"To see him after the game was a high priority for me. I love the kid and I think he's a great talent and a future superstar," Sims said after the clash.

While Sims admitted he's a different beast during the game, it doesn't overtake the respect he has for his opponent.

Vaughan on State of Origin mission for NSW Blues without injured Klemmer
Dragons Den
r0_0_3311_2154_w1200_h678_fmax.jpg

Crunch time Paul Vaughan is tackled in the Blues loss to Queensland at Suncorp Stadium. Picture: AAP Image/Dan Peled

Dragons prop Paul Vaughan is ready to carry the torch for NSW in the must-win second State of Origin game in Perth, in the absence of injured enforcer David Klemmer.

Blues coach Brad Fittler was left with some selection headaches after the series opener, compounded by Klemmer, who played 51 unbroken minutes in Brisbane, suffering a hand injury set to leave him sidelined for three or four weeks.

Vaughan was also a standout in the 18-14 loss after NSW led 8-nil at half-time, but he knows there's a void to fill in Klemmer's absence.

"I was devastated for him," Vaughan said.

"Klem is one of the best front-rowers getting around in the comp.

"I look up to him a bit, I like to look at the way he trains, he's got a huge motor, so I try and match what he does.

"Someone's going to have to step up to that workload he has, there's big shoes to fill ... I want to increase my workload as well."

Vaughan admits playing bigger minutes would require multiple stints and adding to the pressure on him is the inexperience of the NSW pack, where Payne Haas and Cameron Murray made their Origin debuts in game one.

The 28-year-old endorsed the selection prospects of Melbourne premiership player Dale Finucane and Penrith's Reagan Campbell-Gillard, who made his Origin debut last year.

Brisbane's Matt Lodge and Thirroul junior and two-time NRL premiership player Matt Prior are also in the mix.

The squads for game two, to be played at the new stadium in Perth on June 23 will be named after the Dragons clash with Manly at Brookvale on Sunday.

Vaughan admitted it has been difficult approaching Origin this year on the back of five straight losses, in contrast to the 2018 campaign when the Dragons won nine of their first 11 games.

St George Illawarra produced a pressure-relieving 36-12 win over cellar-dwellers the Bulldogs on Monday.

They now face a crucial showdown with Manly, who are seventh overall with a 7-6 record, ahead of the Dragons at 5-7 in 10th.

Vaughan will square off against NSW teammate Jake Trbojevic, as well as his brother and Manly fullback Tom, who could earn a Blues recall on the wing.

He's adamant he will be fearless approaching the Sea Eagles clash.

"The attitude I have is I wouldn't be playing rep footy without the Dragons," Vaughan said. "When I come back here I want to put my best performance in, that's the best way to repay the boys. I'll be doing everything I can Sunday arvo to play my best footy and worry about the (Origin) task after that."

High Dragons workload has Vaughan ready to lift for Blues

Paul Vaughan believes the extra minutes he has been forced to play for St George Illawarra this season will enable him to help fill the void in the NSW team for Origin II after the loss of his Blues front-row partner David Klemmer with a fractured wrist.

Vaughan admits that it will be difficult to replace Klemmer but the Dragons prop agreed that Reagan Campbell-Gillard and Dale Finucane were two players worthy of a call-up into a NSW team he said should remain largely unchanged from the series opener.

"I think we have got a great team there, the talent is stacked from 1-17 so I don't think we need to really look externally too much, we just have to get a few things right internally," Vaughan said.

"I know there are a couple of changes that have to made through injury but we have just got to keep the same core players and I think we will be right."

Klemmer played the first 52 minutes of last week's 18-14 loss to Queensland at Suncorp Stadium because Blues coach Brad Fittler felt the Newcastle prop was performing so well he didn't want to replace him.

Match Highlights: Maroons v Blues

In contrast, Vaughan played 41 minutes in two stints but the 28-year-old regularly plays longer for the Dragons and has been averaging 54 minutes per match this season because of injuries to middle forwards and the unavailability of Jack de Belin.

"I don't know if I can play 50 minutes straight like Klem, because he has got a massive motor and I play differently to Klem, but at the same time I can do those minutes in different stints," Vaughan said.

"I want to step up and increase my workload as well. I want to try and match what he does but it is going to be pretty tough. At the same time, I am looking forward to it and I can't wait.

"Personally I thought my performance was pretty strong in Origin I and now I know I can compete at the level, I want to have a bigger impact, I want to play more minutes, I want to do more work."

Like his NSW teammates, Vaughan had no idea that Klemmer had fractured his wrist early in the first half as carried the ball more than 100 metres in the opening 20 minutes.

North Queensland prop Jordan McLean was the player most likely to replace Klemmer but he injured his hamstring in last weekend's loss to Manly, while Campbell-Gillard produced his best game of the season for Penrith and Finucane plays well every week at Melbourne.

"I think one of the best things NSW has is the number of forwards to choose from so whoever is going to get picked is going to do the job," Vaughan said.

"Campbell-Gillard has been there before and he is playing some good footy at the moment. He is getting back to form and when he is at his best he is one of the best front-rowers in the game.

"Dale Finucane has been a very successful player for a long time because he has been at a great club. He has played in four or five grand finals so you can't look past him. He is efficient, his work rate is great, he is just one of those blokes who is pretty much made for Origin."

Match Highlights: Bulldogs v Dragons

While he said the entire NSW team was keen for redemption in the historic June 23 Origin at Perth's Optus Stadium, Vaughan's first priority is helping St George Illawarra to a win over the Sea Eagles on Sunday.

After humbling Canterbury 36-12 last Monday to end a five-match losing streak, the Dragons are just two points behind seventh-placed Manly on 12 points and share eighth spot with four other teams.

"We want to start winning back-to-back games but Manly have got a great forward pack and they are a pretty powerful bunch so it is going to be another tough game," Vaughan said.

"The attitude I have is that I wouldn't be playing rep footy without the Dragons and I wouldn't be doing it without the boys as well so when I come back here I want to put my best foot forward.

"That is the best way to repay the boys and I think that is the attitude you have do have so I will be doing everything I can on Sunday, trying to play my best footy and then worry about Origin after that."

'I'd cut oranges': Sims desperate for another Blues taste

Dragons enforcer Tariq Sims says he would cut oranges and run drinks if it meant getting another taste of a Blues Origin camp.

With no designs on a starting spot, Sims is targeting a bench impact role for game two but says even just to get back into camp as an extra squad member would be a dream come true.

Sims got a long-awaited taste of Origin in the game three dead rubber last year, playing 34 minutes off the bench in an 18-12 loss at Suncorp Stadium.

He played strongly with 75 metres and a tackle bust from eight carries, as well as 20 tackles, but his debut is perhaps most remembered for a costly penalty in possession with NSW 12-8 up in the 50th minute, responding to some heavy niggle in a tackle from Ben Hunt.

Sims was right in the frame for this year's series opener, eventually losing out to Angus Crichton in a three-way battle for the last bench spot alongside eventual 18th man Ryan Matterson.

He spoke to coach Brad Fittler after the squad was finalised and he knows he has some things to work on to get back in the side – the mission now is to give the Blues hierarchy no choice but to pick him.

"I'm desperate to get into the Blues but there's a few things I need to tidy up in my game," Sims said.

"I want to make sure I'm working hard. I want to make my performances pick themselves, I don't want to leave it up to a flip of the coin.

"I know what I need to work on, I know what I need to do so it's just up to me to go out and do it."

Match Highlights: Bulldogs v Dragons

Sims' season to date has been solid rather than spectacular but four of his five returns of 130-plus metres have come in his past four starts, including his first try of the year in round 10.

"The last couple of weeks I'm really starting to hit my straps again," he said.

He admitted it would be tough to break into the team now with few changes expected in the pack other than needing to replace prop David Klemmer, who has a fractured wrist.

"I think the boys played outstanding in game one but the bounce of the ball was going Queensland's way," he said.

"Sitting back the other night and watching them run around, I felt for the boys.

"I really wanted to be out there with them, taking those tough carries and doing that hard stuff that impact players want to do.

"That's the sort of role I want to be targeting is that impact player coming off the bench blowing shoulders off.

"It's going to be really hard to make changes in that Blues side but for me to force my way back into the team, first of all I just want to get into the camp. I'm desperate to get into the camp with the boys.

"If my job was to cut oranges and run the bottles out for the boys I'd take that on so hard. Whatever role there is for me to play there I'd happily do it."

Dragons announce first 2019 Women's Premiership signings

St George Illawarra have announced nine New South Wales Origin stars as its first signings ahead of the Dragons' second NRL Holden Women's Premiership campaign later this year.

Back-rower Kezie Apps, wingers Jessica Sergis and Shakiah Tungai and inaugural Dragons Women's Player of the Year Holli Wheeler have all re-signed with the Red V following their starring roles in the club's maiden campaign in 2018.

Experienced playmaker Maddie Studdon, recent National Championships MVP Tiana Penitani, Maori All Stars fullback Botille Vette-Welsh, Indigenous All Stars centre Shaylee Bent, and New South Wales Country front-rower Takilele Katoa will also join the Dragons in 2019.

All nine players will represent New South Wales at the Women's State of Origin on Friday, June 21 at North Sydney Oval.

"It's a great way to get the ball rolling for the Dragons ahead of the second season of the Women's Premiership. There's been a lot of hard work done behind the scenes with more time and preparation. We as a staff had a clear mind of what the squad needed to look like as a result," Dragons Women's Premiership coach Daniel Lacey said.

"We are really happy with the way we have started with these nine players. Our focus still remains on the Dragons' women's pathway too. We are really proud with how it has come along, and are still focused on developing our juniors into NRL players."

Long-term dual New South Wales and Australian rugby league and touch football representative Maddie Studdon - who also played her first senior football at Helensburgh - will add valuable experience to the team in a big boost for the Dragons' upcoming campaign.

Tiana Penitani is a name synonymous in Australian rugby sevens and Oztag circles, having represented her country at World Cups in both sports. The outside back has taken to rugby league quickly; her being awarded National Championships MVP with NSW City and selection for the Blues proving a testament to this.

"Maddie is a great get for us and will be a fantastic fit for the team. I've done a lot of homework on her in terms of not only how she'll help the Dragons' game but how we can help her game too," Lacey said.

"I was able to work with her in the NSW City team at the recent National Championships and I really took on board the importance that she does have on a team with her game management so she'll have a big influence on our team.

"Tiana is relatively new to rugby league but she has shown in a short amount of time how good she can be. She played for NSW City at the National Championships and the proof was in the pudding with what she can do," Lacey added.

"It was a no-brainer to sign her on the back of her current form and history in other sports."

Exciting prospect Vette-Welsh's ability to play anywhere in the spine will be cause for excitement, according to Lacey, following her recent starring role for NSW Country.

Katoa was another selected for NSW Country off the back of her big performances for the Riverina in the CRL competition. Having only taken up the game two years ago, Katoa has also already represented Tonga.

Bent would've been a Dragon if not for the competition's age restrictions in 2018. The NSW City representative has also proven recently that she's adept at moving to the forwards when required and will only get better with experience.

"It seems with Botille that no matter where you put her on the field, she contributes to any team she plays for in a big way. She has played fullback and hooker for NSW City and in the halves for the Wests Tigers' state premiership team so her versatility is really important for us," Lacey said.

"Seeing Takilele play for Riverina in the Country Rugby League competition, she was the best forward on the paddock for every one of their games. Off the back of that she was given the opportunity to represent NSW Country where she shined and now in the Origin team so it's really great to sign a girl at the top of her game.

"The last 12 months we have seen Shaylee develop into a strong ball-runner, a keen learner and someone who has a big future in the game. She showcased this while playing for the City team where she moved from the centres to the back row and came up against the likes of Kezie."

The re-signings of fan-favourites Apps, Wheeler, Sergis and Tungai will help reinforce and further build the positive culture established in the club's inaugural Women's Premiership campaign.

Off the back of their successful campaigns with the Dragons in 2018, all four women were recently rewarded places in the NRL's elite female pathways development squad.

"It's awesome to have the four of them recommit to the Dragons. They were a big part of our team last year and they have played a big part in the club planning for the future," Lacey said.

"We were always going to re-sign the players we thought could duplicate the job from 2018. Holli was the Dragons' inaugural Women's Player of the Year, Kezie stood up as captain when Sam (Bremner) was injured while Jess and Shak have kicked on with confidence and the benefits they received from playing at the Dragons last year."

The acquisition of the Dragons' first nine players for season 2019 leaves the club with 13 spots to be filled, ahead of September's competition.

The Dragons' Women's Premiership team is the pinnacle of the female rugby league pathway across the club's region – from Earlwood in Sydney to Bateman's Bay on the South Coast – with more than 15,000 girls and women from Under-6s to opens currently competing in our region across tackle, tag and touch football.

'We should have first rights': Red V defiant about sharing with Sharks

St George Illawarra powerbrokers believe they should determine which fixtures are played at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium in any venue-sharing arrangement with arch-rivals Cronulla, declaring "Kogarah will always be our spiritual home."

As revealed by the Herald, the Sharks are considering shifting some of their home fixtures to Kogarah if the refurbishment of their leagues club precinct leaves PointsBet Stadium unavailable from next season.

News of the potential incursion from their nearest rivals caught Dragons officials off guard, although they remain bullish the area will always be their territory.

"It's one of our major catchment areas and that is never going to change," Dragons chairman Andrew Gordon said. "We will have to look at our spread of home games and they will have to work around us.

Enemy territory: Cronulla could take home games to Kogarah
"I'd imagine we'd be the ones with the first rights to be picking our home games there. If they so happen to end up negotiating something with council, then so be it. [But] the first port of call should be our games there and they can look at whatever is left in terms of availability.

"Kogarah will always be our spiritual home."

The Sharks are in discussions with developers to determine the exact impact the leagues club refurbishment will have on their home ground. It is understood the works will take 18 to 24 months to complete, although there is no official start date as yet.

A move into enemy territory at Kogarah is viewed as the least disruptive contingency plan, as Sharks fans would only have to travel about 10 kilometres from their traditional home in the Shire. Should the shift eventuate, it will add further spice to one of the NRL's fiercest local derbies.

Dragons players were perplexed by the news – and then defiant – about potentially sharing a home ground with their closest rivals.

"I thought it was weird, especially with the rivalry," Dragons forward Tyson Frizell said. "It's like the Roosters playing Souths at Redfern. Being an ex-Sharks player, I don't see why you would want to take your home games right in the heart of St George. That's just my opinion.

Being an ex-Sharks player, I don't see why you would want to take your home games right in the heart of St George.

Tyson Frizell
"Even though technically it will be a home game for them, I guess everyone knows it's the Dragons' home ground. It will be enjoyable to play them if it's their home game and we're against them at [Kogarah]."

Captain Gareth Widdop added: "It's not their home ground, it's the Dragons' ground. They can go play down the local oval I reckon."

The only major Sydney "league" stadium set to be in operation next year will be Bankwest Stadium at Parramatta, limiting Cronulla's options in finding a temporary home.

The $360 million, 30,000-capacity ground at Parramatta is already set to be used by the Eels, Tigers, Rabbitohs and Bulldogs for either part of or the entire season in 2020 while ANZ Stadium and Allianz Stadium are refurbished and rebuilt.

The NSW government confirmed on Wednesday the ANZ Stadium facelift would begin after Sydney's State of Origin fixture next year.

The Sharks will host the Dragons at PointsBet Stadium in round 18 later this year, potentially the last time the two clubs face off at the ground before work starts on the leagues club project.
