And it was a far-can great show.

Buddy knighted me with his guitar many decades ago. We were holidaying in Coffs and we found out he was playing at of all places, the Sawtell RSL Club. It was a good night.

Some musical encounters are amazing. How about Taj Mahal at the Millers Brighton on a sunny Saturday afternoon!
INXS at the Gladesville Hotel before they became 'known'. About 20 people in the audience at both these performances.
Jimmy Barnes getting up for a set with The Mangrove Boogie Kings at the Manzil Room. Billy Thorpe and his ball-tearing three-piece band at the Bondi Pavillion. Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee at the Roundhouse. Cellar Folk and The Journeys End Wine Bar in Wolloomooloo - Jillian Eastoe and King Dog with Phil Emmanuel on guitar. Galapogos Duck at the Basement. The Cyril B Bunter Band at the Welcome Inn. The Bondi Cigars at The Rose, Shamrock and Thistle (The three weeds). The Dynamic Hepnotics, Chris Bailey solo acoustic sessions, at Sonja's Leichhardt. Radio Birdman at the White Horse. Plus all the punk bands that appeared and disappeared - Johnnie Dole and The Scabs, Tommy and The Dipsticks. Those were the days. Didn't understand how good we had it.

My older sister loves to talk about when INXS played at Jannali Girls’ High in 1983, before they were famous…

Good times…

great tales of entertainment for another generation, I recall going to most of the venues mentioned and more. As for a surprise musical encounter, Joe Walsh doing a warm up gig with the Party Boys at Manning Bar, Sydney Uni on a warm Friday afternoon in the late 80s, in front of maybe 30 people.

A few years ago I played a 'Woodstock' show with Phil as the special guest. One of the nicest blokes I've met and he played great and LOUD. Used to have his (open back) amp up on my drum riser and I had to set up some makeshift baffles so it was a bit quieter up there. :)

Played a dozen or so of those gigs with him and it was one of the highlights of my 40yr+ drumming journey.

So sad that he's no longer around.
