Great to see the Warriors are taking the concept with some seriousness, the weekend can be something special if they all get on board.

The Roosters aren't, but that is understandable with the World Club game the following week.

This looks pretty good, although they sound a bit cocky :

NRL: Extra seats for Nines after tickets sell out

By Steve Deane
5:30 AM Saturday Jan 25, 2014

Organisers of the NRL Auckland Nines have installed temporary seating to increase Eden Park's capacity after the event sold out.

More than 44,400 tickets have been sold for the two-day event on February 15 and 16, making the Nines the first non-All Black test match to sell out the venue since the 1992 Cricket World Cup semifinal between New Zealand and Pakistan.

Promoter David Higgins, of Duco Events, said the extra seats would go on sale on Tuesday at 9am.

"I'm pleased to confirm the Dick Smith Auckland NRL Nines has sold out," Mr Higgins said. "We've filled the stadium to 44,400 people per day, so we've just completed a deal with Eden Park to make available a further 1,600 temporary seats."

At $299 each, the final few seats won't be cheap. But their prime location and the nine hours of entertainment on offer each day meant they were fairly priced, Mr Higgins said.

"We're calling them diamond seats because they are right by the North Stand sideline so probably the best seats in the house. They are on sale this Tuesday at 9am and we expect them to go very quickly."

Auckland Council events arm Ateed, which is providing $9 million of funding over five years for the tournament, was "absolutely thrilled" it had exceeded its year one projection of 35,000 ticket sales, general manager destination and marketing Rachael Carroll said.

The sellout showed Auckland could create its own events and "get it right first time", Mrs Carroll said.

"That's something we really have to celebrate. It's far easier to take an established event from overseas and bring it here."

Creating an event such as the Nines required a "certain leap of faith" that it would sell tickets and generate support from ratepayers and the business community.

The event had also exceeded Ateed's projections for overseas and domestic visitors. More than 6,000 spectators, mainly from Australia, will visit and more than 15,000 domestic travellers will head to Auckland for the event.

"The way the rest of New Zealand has embraced this is fantastic," Mrs Carroll said.

Mr Higgins said the high uptake of tickets from outside the city showed the event's appeal and potential to become a regular fixture on the national sporting calendar. Visitor numbers from Australia would increase once the event got television exposure.
State of Origin matches attracted up to 20,000 interstate travellers and he believed the Nines would eventually match that.

"This product hasn't even been on television yet in Australia, and we expect a huge viewership there as the event will appeal to every club's fanbase.

"That's one big advertisement for Auckland City. Imagine if we get to the point where there are 20,000 people coming out of Australia? In my opinion that's very possible, very soon."

Figures
• 44,400 - Tickets sold
• 1,600 - Temporary seats installed
• 92,000 - Expected crowd over two days
• 6,600 - Overseas visitors
• 15,000 - Domestic visitors to Auckland

It's a great achievement by Duco. Lets hope that there are no off field issues as the media will be waiting to pounce on fights and drunken louts. They'll need a lot of police and security.

Good team. Would have Locke and Mateo in if they are available, and probably Havili, but still that team should go well

Very strong team. Really no reason why we can't win the comp with this line up. Should be interesting to see how they go. Tomkins and Johnson alone should just run circles around most of the opposition.

Interesting that we haven't really picked anyone that would be considered as a hooker. Will it just be a case of whoever's closest goes to dummy half rather than trying to have a specialist?

Raiders have named a weak squad, no Milford etc.

Gosh I hate Ricky Stuart, he is such a turd.

Happy new year everyone else.

Yeah Stuart isn't even going - Matt Parish will be coaching them in the Nines.

That raiders side is pretty good... Lots of good young talent.

Certainly capable enough to beat the Warriors.

TLL is an interesting one.... He's a big guy... But may struggle if it opens up.

Milford is injured I think...

I hope that's a troll mate - looks like a good side to me

Not really, it was an ill informed opinion based purely on a headline by Stuff or NZ herald (can't remember which). But I still loathe Ricky, which was really my point. Not much of one granted, but its a long tedious off season.

That's cool mate, we all have our opinions. As it happens, I agree 100% on Sticky.

They wouldn't want to be marketing test match cricket at Eden Park. That last day 'crowd', in what was a really exciting run chase by India, looked abysmal.

I've never been to the new Eden Park (refurbished for the RWC '11) and it looks like a soulless, grey, concrete bowl when empty.

Organisers of this weekend's Auckland Nines have put strict alcohol policies in place to prevent a repeat of the disorder at the Wellington Sevens.
The Nines will take place at Eden Park with more than 46,000 fans expected to turn out for the rugby league tournament.
Managing director David Higgins said stringent alcohol policies would be in place.
Drinks would be no more than 4 per cent alcohol and served in only plastic glasses. About halfway through the event there would be a two-drink at a time limit from the bar as opposed to the usual four.
"It's just a matter of being aware of possible issues and letting the fans know that they are welcome to have fun, but we don't want people crossing the line," Higgins said.
Organisers had heard anecdotally that people would be coming dressed up and Higgins said he expected a carnival atmosphere at the stadium.
But unlike the Sevens, the Nines would feature players familiar to the crowd and there would be much more interest in the actual sport at this event, he said.
A total of 160 people were ejected from Westpac Stadium on Friday night and another 110 were kicked out on Saturday at the Wellington Sevens at the weekend.
Police publicly slammed the Sevens organisers for the level of drunkenness around the event.
Police will have contingency groups on hand if extra staff are needed and have produced new anti-intoxication ads which will be playing inside the stadium.
Those deemed drunk would not be allowed to enter the stadium.
Eden Park Trust chief executive David Kennedy said people were welcome to come along and have a good time but intoxication would not be tolerated.
"We are not interested in you coming to our event if you have had too much to drink or if you want to have too much to drink," Kennedy said.
He advised those spectators to stay at home.
The popular Auckland Lantern Festival and Rapture 2014 featuring Eminem will also take place this weekend.
Police are advising those in Auckland to pay attention to the laws around alcohol as those in breach could be fined or denied entry to the events.
There would be a walking route between Western Springs and Eden Park for those attending the Nines and the Eminem concert and this would be patrolled closely by police and security.

No I applaud them reading the riot act.

At 6.00pm on the Friday of the Wellington 7's the railway station looked like a massive triage station for a WWI battle. The press gave the organisers a bit of a serve.

Now, if LEAGUE has a similar result, it will be a major, major assault in the press. Scumbag leaguies, not as refined as Raa raa crowd, etc etc.

I am already expecting some serious, bad press come Sunday evening/Monday.
