i'm actually getting excited by the nines. at first i was meh, but now after reading some of the players being mentioned as possibly playing for their clubs it could be quite an exciting tournament. take someone like soward, he's a little merkin but i think he'll actually destroy teams at the nines if he plays. If hayne or barba play imagine what they could do given the amount of space and room. its a shame RTS wont be available as he'd destroy so many teams with his f**king footwork
I am looking forward to the likes of Fifta, Tamou not having 4 or 5 blokes and brick wall to run at and having some space.

I also see some funny moments there too, some will simply not know what to do in space.

I realise that, but its still a stupid idea that never really worked in league.
I think there needs to be some dialog around this issue though...

I don't know if it's just perception... But to me it looks like the NRL, the clubs and the players aren't making as much as they really should from jersey sales compared to the big overseas sports who personalise they're playing uniform.

I'm not saying that this is the NRLs fault... As Rugby Union hasn't been able to do it either...

And I'm certainly not a fan of what the ESL does with it's numbering... It looks like a mess.

Maybe they need to think outside the square a little... Maybe have each player given an NRL registration number which sits on the players shoulder... With they're name above it.

So whatever jersey or position they play... The positional number can change as needed but the name and registration stays the same for they're whole career.

Or maybe have the name above the positional number like the rep jerseys... With the registration number across the bottom of the back of the jersey.

I'm not sure... I'm sure greater minds could figure something out...

Putting a name on players jersey's is now almost impossible as we have sold that position to sponsors. I really don't see any benefit for assigning numbers to players instead of positions

Thats not actually true.

The reason they dont put names on the jerseys is because they dont know who is going to be in a given jersey.

Some clubs will reuse jerseys a few time and others (probably most) will bring out new ones every game. But every one of those jerseys is bought and made at the begining of the season; they dont put them together every week of the year.

I personally dont care if they use the taditional number system or a new player assigned order, but names on jerseys is a massive improvement and this number swapping is the thing currently standing in the way of that.

I never said that was the reason they don't put names on jersey's I said that this space has now been sold for sponsorship.

I'd hate to see us go down the gimmicky route of having players play in any number.

This is really a discussion for another thread though.

Rugby league immortal Andrew Johns will make his return to the football field when he straps on the boots at the Auckland Nines next month.
While Brad Fittler will make his comeback for the Sydney Roosters, Johns won't be joining his beloved Newcastle Knights. The former Australian halfback will be the headline act in a charity touch football game between the Australian media and New Zealand media to be played in front of more than 40,000 fans at Eden Park.
The match, which will pit Johns against former Kiwis counterpart Stacey Jones, will be played between the semi-final and final on Sunday, February 16 - and feature several big-name former players now involved in the media.
Nines organisers have locked in the likes of Brett Finch, Monty Betham and Richie Barnett, while Gorden Tallis, Danny Buderus, Wendell Sailor, Ryan Girdler and Nathan Fien have all expressed an interest in playing in the match.

All Blacks breakaway Liam Messam, who lost to Paul Gallen in a Fight For Life charity fight in December, is also in negotiations to represent the Kiwi team.
Fittler, who is expected to have his contract to play with the Roosters at the tournament rubber-stamped by the NRL on Monday, had originally committed to playing for the Australian media team before pledging his allegiance to the tricolours. ''Freddy came to me a couple of weeks ago about playing touch footy for the media team and I told him I would love to go,'' Johns said. ''So we organised to go over there early to do some surfing for a few days at Raglan. Then I read he's going to play in the actual Nines. Some people are mocking it but with the ball in his hand I think he'll surprise some people.
''I think he'll do some great things with the ball in his hand but when he's on the other side and trying to make some tackles with effort upon effort, that might get him. But it's a great thing for the game to have him playing.''
The Australian media team will also comprise journalists and reporters from the major media organisations. But Johns will be the player most at Eden Park will look forward to seeing. ''I'll be doing plenty of passing and hopefully I won't do much running,'' Johns said. ''I never get the itch to play [rugby league] again. I was lucky enough to have a long period of time in the game, but I never get the itch. This is something different and should be very exciting.''
The rules of the match are yet to be confirmed but two fans from Australia and New Zealand will be given the opportunity to play alongside the greats of the game.
A radio competition will be run in both countries to award a fan a spot in a team, while a position will also be auctioned off to the highest bidder to raise money for charity.

I have argued for a while - not that I really give a crap if they assign numbers to players or not - but if they did assign a number / name to a jersey, then jersey sales could be tracked and if a player such as Slater, or GI or JT or Soward sold X% of jerseys, their manager could bring that in to the deal with the club.

If it also meant the club sold more jerseys because of a bankable player joining a club, then the player should get a cut too. RLPA should be on to this for their members.

The same for ODI cricket shirts. A couple of years ago, you could get plain or Ponting and 14. I emailed CA and the manufacturer for other player names/numbers and they wouldn't do it.

The Wellington Yawnion Sevens hasn't sold out for yet, which is incredible considering how hard it usually is to get tickets.
A much better product is on its way.

Was just talking about that with guys from work. 4 hardcore yawnion fans who go every year to Welly I have been able to convince to tag along to the 9's comp with me.

Poaching their fans and hopefully converting em too.

Wow, that's really interesting. It's normally sold out by now.

Any reason why it hasn't sold out yet?

I think a lot of people from Auckland will just go to the 9s now, since it is cheaper and will have better quality footy. Quite a few people travel from all places to go to the 7s, but with a better product on display in Auckland I think the 7s is in for a bit of shock.

Lets hope the 9's is exciting for the union fans having a look & they wanna come back next year....& show more than a passing interest in the warriors / NRL in between.

Perhaps interest in league in NZ this year could be a pointer to whether they get a 2nd team sooner rather than later.

We have the added bonus of the novelty factor, but they have had the benefit of 10 years of being the party of the year. Won't read too much into crowds in the first year, but will be interesting to see what happens in the long term.

exactly. like the all stars concept. first year or 2 there was a lot of interest but the novelty wore off quickly

i dont follow cricket but i'm assuming they still wont release shirts for different players? As much as people like the idea, the reality is that the market is probably too small to release specific player jersey's. Also when players move clubs all of a sudden the jersey to the shop and most fans becomes almost worthless if it's branded with a players number and name who's no longer there.

people can argue that Inglis jersey's account for x% of souths jersey sales but the shops wont care as long as they can sell the jersey they have. Inglis decides to move to Superleague suddenly and 100 jersey's you ordered are now worthless
