Personally I will become very bored with the concept very quickly if after the first year it stays as just the NRL clubs competing. I want to see the islands, Maori, Indigenous represented with their own teams. Could also argue for inclusion of USA, England and even Italy from heritage players from Australia if need be.

A separate international nines circuit would be a great way to build the game in south east asia and the pacific.

Why not run it mid season? Could be run in line with an origin stand alone 3 games, 3 weeks straight.

The only problem is you would not have the origin superstars.

This

The NRL needs 2 x 2-3 week breaks mid season for Origin, Nines or and the rest of the RL world can play internationals. Regardless of what the tv world wants, this is a must from 2018 on

League Nines on the way
By Michael Burgess
5:30 AM Sunday Jul 28, 2013

Get ready Auckland - League Nines is coming to a stadium near you.

The multi-million dollar Auckland League Nines tournament - which will feature all 16 NRL clubs and some of the sport's biggest stars - is set to be signed off by the NRL within the next week.

The event, which carries an estimated prizemoney of $3 million (including about $600,000 for the winners), is earmarked for the weekend of February 15 and 16 next year.

It will be the richest event on these shores in 2014 in terms of prizemoney and across the two days is expected to draw crowds at a similar, or perhaps larger level than the Wellington Sevens (70,000).

Ateed (Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development) sees it as a potential showpiece event for the city that will draw vast visitor numbers from New Zealand and Australia. They also hope, like the Sevens, it becomes an annual spectacle synonymous with the city.

The Herald on Sunday understands that one of the final hurdles was getting buy-in from the players, particularly the marquee names, but this has now been achieved. The NRL clubs have agreed that their teams will contain a certain percentage of the first-grade squad.

This may be slightly complicated by the Rugby League World Cup in November, where up to 100 NRL players could be involved. Players are entitled to a six-week break after the completion of the tournament (the final is on November 30) which will compress the NRL pre-season next year.

However, there is an expectation that many of the big names will still be involved. A likely scenario could see the Storm send Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk for example, but allow Cameron Smith and Ryan Hoffman to continue their training at home.

Unlike the Wellington Sevens, where a vast majority of the players are virtual unknowns and most of those attending only periodically watching the on-field action, many of the participants in the Auckland Nines will be household names. Given that, and the popularity of many NRL clubs on these shores, the event organisers are confident that the tournament will be a success.

It is also hoped that the tournament will provide a significant boost to the sport in this country, given many NRL clubs draw a significant amount of their talent from New Zealand. In the long-term the NRL believe that the nines format could also be used to develop the game. Like sevens, nines would offer lower barriers to entry and enable emerging nations to become relatively competitive at a quicker rate.

It is believed each club will receive a minimum of A$70,000 ($80,000) for competing while the winner's purse will be more than the NRL winners currently receive. The playing rules have yet to be finalised, but games are likely to be 18 minutes long.

Between 1988-1997 (with a brief revival in 2003-04) the Rugby League International Sevens was the traditional opener to the NRL season. It featured NRL teams, some English clubs and international sides and a hot-stepping Benji Marshall starred in the 2003 tournament, making his first mark on the league world.

With the the popularity of Twenty20 cricket among other short form sports, the NRL are confident there is an increased appetite for nines in this era.

I think they'll see how this goes before any type of expansion, be it NRL teams vs developing nations, residents and/or the top 4 SL sides or change it to international nines, it's all going to come down to support from NRL sides, crowds, TV but most of all, profit

Nines out to rival capital's sevens
By Steve Deane
5:30 AM Friday Aug 2, 2013

Organisers hope Auckland's new league nines tournament - to be held in February at Eden Park - will rival Wellington's hugely popular sevens event.

It is hoped the National Rugby League (NRL) nines will attract 100,000 spectators to the stadium over February 15 and 16.

Auckland Council is understood to be bankrolling the tournament to the tune of more than $10 million over the next five years.

After 18 months of negotiations, a three-way deal between the NRL, Auckland Council's events arm Ateed and promoters Zenith - a subsidiary of boxing and celebrity event promotor Duco Events - was finally settled at a meeting of NRL chief executives on Monday.

All three parties have remained quiet about the details of the tournament, which is expected to be formally launched within the next 10 days.

The Herald understands:

The nine-a-side tournament will be a regular fixture on Auckland's summer calendar for at least the next five years.

All 16 NRL clubs will compete and will be contractually obliged to field a designated number of star players.

The event will be broadcast live in New Zealand and Australia.

Prizemoney for the winner will be around A$500,000, making it more lucrative for the first-place getters than the NRL premiership.

Duco director David Higgins said the company could not comment on negotiations "other than to say it's incredibly exciting and if it happens it will be New Zealand's biggest event on many levels".

Duco has promoted the concept as having all the carnival elements of the Wellington sevens combined with a more meaningful on-field product.

A prize pool of over $3 million will be up for grabs, making it one of Australasia's richest sporting events.

An Ateed spokesman said the organisation could not comment as "no contract had yet been signed by Ateed".

However, the Herald understands Ateed regards the tournament as a "signature event" for Auckland and a centrepiece of a major events programme that includes the ITM 400 V8 motor race, the Cricket World Cup 2015, the Fifa Under-20 World Cup and the World Masters Games.

The tournament was originally proposed for Auckland Anniversary Weekend. However, that end-of-January date clashed with the Rugby League World Cup because a mandatory six-week stand-down period from December 1 would have given players too little time to prepare for the Auckland tournament.

The tournament is opposed by the likes of prominent Australian league identity Phil Gould, who views it as a distraction from the NRL proper.

However, the NRL has always appeared to be a strong backer of the concept, which is also strongly supported in New Zealand league circles for its potential to promote the game here.

i'm glad they're going to make teams field a minimum number of star players. how they determine who's a star player remains to be seen but i'd hate to see clubs send out their Q cup or nsw cup players. though i guess parra may still be allowed to send sandow as he's their highest paid player in either competition

I really hope its succesful. Eventually we could have SOO on stand alone weekends with a NRL Invitational nines played over the same three weekends at the same time. Include Int, state and rep teams to give it more flavour, play it in 3 different cities across Oz and NZ each year and it could be a massive new exciting RL product.

Fox would love it as they could fill Fri night and two whole weekend days of programming with the comp, simu cast the finals on Ch9, everyones happy!

25 teams, 16 NRL teams plus WA,Vic,NT, Indigenous and Maori, Tonga, Samoa and PNG, Europe Exiles (or England) 5 pools of 5 teams. Play each in your pool Fri night and Sat then knockout for top teams on Sunday. 5 pool winners and runners up plus top try 2 try scoring teams in 12 team knockout Sunday finals.

If they went the route of stand alone SOO, it would be better for Tonga, Samoa, PNG and Fiji to play a full pacific cup. Play each other once, for three games each with the winner based on a ladder format.

That could still be played in conjunction with SOO and a nines torny and would benefit the international game a lot more than having them running around in a 9s game
