The new album Out Of Exile, released today, is hotter than a freshly baked croissant and twice as tasty. I picked it up this morning and listened to it over breakfast, and while the taste of my croissant has long since abated, the echoes of this music remains. Chris Cornell has stolen the voice of God and - judging by the aching, tortured lyrics - the Lord has damned him for it. The virtuoso Tom Morello is at his world-beating best, and Rick Rubin returns again on knob-twiddling duties. Savvy fans of the Slave's self-titled debut need to get up and get this album. Not just greater than the sum of their parts - but greater than anything else out there baby.

I know you were trying to sound all cool with your metaphors and what-not, but Tim Morello is the complete opposite of a virtuoso.

And it better be a huge improvement on Self-Titled. I love my RATM and Soundgarden, but the first album was poor.

It's Tom.

I know you were trying to sound condescending with your semantic correction of my post, but Tom Morello is, in most opinions, a virtuoso. I know it can be considered the last act of a desperate argument to reach for the dictionary, but alas desperate tools such as yourself, call for desperate measures:

vir·tu·o·so n.
pl. vir·tu·o·sos or vir·tu·o·si
  1. A musician with masterly ability, technique, or personal style.
  2. A person with masterly skill or technique in the arts.
  3. A person with a strong interest in the fine arts, especially in antiquities.
  4. Archaic. A very learned person.

Audioslave = LEGENDS. Glad I'm not the only one who thinks they are awesome. Got the first album, love it.

Can't wait to buy the 2nd, I've only heard 'Be Yourself' twice & already love it

Mate, his solo in Bulls On Parade is one of the most brilliant, controlled solos of all time. You quite simply don't hear people do what he does with a guitar. Fits into plenty of those categories that you posted with the virtuoso definition.

The I and the O are so close together...

Tom is not a virtuoso in the tradional sense. He is a innovator, you know the one note-type solo in Sleep Now In the Fire, where he toggle switches between the pick-ups, that is Top Morello the innovator, not Tom Morello the virtuoso.

To quote the man in relation to the Vai's and the Rhoads: " Why join that race to finish last? I made a conscious decision to concentrate on the eccentricities of my playing, the little glitches, the toggle switch play which I would do as a gimmick..."

Innovator, yes. Virtuoso, no.

Got the first...Loved it.

They'll never be as good as RATM, but they're not far off.

Might pick up this one tomorrow. I already heard it a week or two ago through their myspace. Sounded very f**king good indeed...

CIG makes a very good point.

Morello is an amazing musician, but is more of an innovater than a virtuoso by far.

Before I go get can someone tell me to expect with this album? By that I mean, does it rock or is the album more along the lines of the new single, which, IMO has a weak sound to it. When i listen to a bands like Audioslave/Soundgarden/RATM I listen for the rock.

Is the mix of slow and rock songs similar to the first LP? If there are more slow songs that rock songs I won't be happy.

agreed 100%
loved the first album, but the new single sounds soft, very soft
hopefully its an 'under the bridge' RHCP tactic

Its hard rock Bobo, but the focus is on melody, rather than sledgehammer riffs. I prefer not to use terms like soft, but Be Yourself is certainly at that end of the spectrum - however it is not indicative of the album as a whole. It's thrill-a-minute hard rock with a heart.

Its no secret here that RATM are one of my fav bands ever, so I bought the first Audioslave CD, and was pretty good, not in the league of RATM.

Zack gave the boys a totally different sound imo, with his songwriting.

I do like Audioslave, as well as Sound Garden, and I will probably buy the CD, but they cannot replace RATM, and by the sound of it, they are not trying to.

I loved self titled, especially the first half.

Can't say the same for the second CD, although it is growing on me. So far I rate it as a good album, I think the initial post here was a bit hyperbolic.

One mans enthusiasm is another man's hyperbole, just like one man's virtuoso is another man's something or other.

Oh..........and I forgot, Tom Morello is a freak

He can get more unique sounds out of his guitar than most other guitarist all put togehter, very original.

Be Yourself is ghey imo...

Some of the other songs on it are awesome though. A few riff's that could have fit perfectly on RATM S/T or Battle Of LA.

It's definately grown on me after a couple of more listens. I reckon the songs sound more Chris Cornell than RATM. Good album though.

Tom Morello can get some crazy sounds. Does anyone else think he goes a bit over the top though? It can get a little bit ridiculous.
