You love the Bombers, the Broncos or the Wanderers? Well here’s the right NFL team for you

THE 2014 NFL is finally here. For those Aussies still without a team to follow, check out our guide on which franchise you should be cheering for.

SYDNEY SWANS — SEATTLE SEAHAWKS
You like your championship defence impregnable and your locker room fanatically committed to each other.

NEW ZEALAND WARRIORS — DETROIT LIONS
What’s the point of winning if you can’t do it in the most electrifying, end-to-end way possible? Are you not entertained?

GOLD COAST SUNS — MINNESOTA VIKINGS
Like Gary Ablett, perhaps no player in the NFL can dominate a game with ball in hand like running back, Adrian Peterson. A.P, All Day, whatever you call him, this guy wins games for the Vikes.

PARRAMATTA EELS — WASHINGTON REDSKINS
You fancy free-agency spending, front office showdowns, and if you’re a fan of Jarryd Hayne, meet livewire QB Robert Griffin III.

WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS — PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
You’re a talented bunch, for sure, but you have a habit of letting the entire world know. Very loudly, with passionate and sometimes ridiculous fans.

BRISBANE BRONCOS — NEW YORK GIANTS
The sheen might be off your former dynasty, but with a title-winning coach in town your championship calibre can’t be held down for long.

NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS — NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
You’re into one-man shows led by Jonathan Thurston, and in New Orleans the buck stops with real-life Saint Drew Brees. ‘Who Dat Nation’ is for you.

NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS — ST LOUIS RAMS
You’re stoic, having endured your star playmaker Jarrod Mullen suffer injury upon injury, ruining promising seasons.

ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA — PITTSBURGH STEELERS
Your Steel City dynasty might’ve ended decades ago, but there are few jerseys with more championship fabric than yours.

MELBOURNE STORM — NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
You build your title-winning teams around a holy trinity. And Tom Brady, Darrelle Revis and Rob Gronkowski are just that. Both have that ‘do your job’, winning mentality.

CRONULLA SHARKS — MIAMI DOLPHINS
If you’ve persevered through the ASADA saga at Cronulla, the bullying scandal that sunk the talented Dolphins last season would be a piece of cake. Also, both have sea creature mascots.

CANBERRA RAIDERS — BUFFALO BILLS
Few come as passionate and committed as Bills fans, but you’d love to see a few big name signings come to town.

SOUTH SYDNEY RABBITOHS — DENVER BRONCOS
With the glorious past long-faded, why not just pay the best (Peyton Manning) to come to you? Can’t say Greg Inglis hasn’t been a good buy either.

COLLINGWOOD MAGPIES — OAKLAND RAIDERS
You live by an “us-against-the-world” philosophy, enjoy an owner in the spotlight and look good in black.

GOLD COAST TITANS — SAN DIEGO CHARGERS
You fly under the radar by the beach, but with a new coach in town, know won’t be kept quiet for long.

CANTERBURY BULLDOGS — CHICAGO BEARS
A consistent presence in the playoffs race, though you haven’t been at your best for a while. Your fans always bring the intimidation factor.

PENRITH PANTHERS — KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
You’re the upstart underdog, with a chip on your shoulder and penchant for taking in strays and turning them into stars.

QUEENSLAND REDS — ATLANTA FALCONS
Does James O’Connor and Karmichael Hunt lighting up the Suncorp cauldron sound good to you? Then Matt Ryan and Julio Jones piling up touchdowns in the Dirty South should be just to your taste.

PORT ADELAIDE POWER — CAROLINA PANTHERS
Perhaps not the glitziest franchise, but the Panthers spent last season knocking on the door to the Super Bowl behind one-man highlight reel Cam Newton.

ST KILDA SAINTS — ARIZONA CARDINALS
Some say your title challenge may have past several years ago, but inspirational club legend Larry Fitzgerald may be able to keep the Cardinals flying high.

MANLY SEA EAGLES — BALTIMORE RAVENS
It doesn’t matter if it’s gritty, pretty, or comes with a sampling of off-field drama, a win is a win and like the Sea Eagles, that’s what Baltimore has done best for the past 15 years.

MELBOURNE DEMONS — CLEVELAND BROWNS
Disappointment has become part of the furniture for the forsaken Browns, and once again they’ll be looking to their high-profile draft class to ignite the franchise. We’re talking Johnny Manziel, aka Johnny Football.

BRISBANE ROAR — CINCINNATI BENGALS
Not only do Brisbane and Cincinnati share feline family traits, they are also both young, gifted, and poised to emerge from the north to challenge for the Super Bowl crown.

WESTS TIGERS — NEW YORK JETS
Like the Tigers with Luke Brooks, the Jets are looking to second-year quarterback Geno Smith to revive ‘Gang Green’ following the messy departure of bemoaned former favourite Mark Sanchez.

GWS GIANTS — JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
Picked on since arriving as part of the NFL’s expansion, the once-harmless Jags are emerging with claws bared as their youthful ranks gain experience

RICHMOND TIGERS — INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
Behind talismanic quarterback Andrew Luck, the Colts have earned a similar reputation for storming back when all but the most diehard fans have let hope slip.

BRISBANE LIONS — TENNESSEE TITANS
Name-changes are nothing new for the Titans, who like the Lion cubs will look to their promising new generation for a return to playoff contention.

SYDNEY ROOSTERS — SAN FRANCISCO 49ers
They might be from the high side of the harbour city, but the 49ers are bona fide contenders, eager to see the evolution of their own tattooed, big name playmaker Colin Kaepernick.

ESSENDON BOMBERS — TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
The Red and Black Bucs have been hardened through their own turbulence in the coaching ranks, but are tipped to emerge as a playoff threat under phenomenally-named coach Lovie Smith.

NORTH MELBOURNE KANGAROOS — DALLAS COWBOYS
Unable to get over the hump and rekindle the championship flame of 1990s, heartbreak has been the word for the former heavyweights, but hope remains the Blue and Silver will rise again.

CENTRAL COAST MARINERS — HOUSTON TEXANS
The defensive prowess of key Texans duo J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney, just like Central Coast’s four are set to keep attacking players frustrated this season. As they say, a good defence wins games, and Houston have what it takes to do just that.

GEELONG CATS — GREEN BAY PACKERS
Just a small town team with fewer citizens than Geelong, but there are few talent pipelines that compare to the Cats in the AFL and the Packers of Green Bay, Wisconsin.

I don't know much about AFL or A-League and I really don't care about Australian Rugby so I won't go near those...

But any suggestions for better fits??

Off the top of my head I thought the Dallas Cowboys and the Canberra Raiders... Huge in the early to mid 90's... Are suffering the effects of giving an injury prone playmaker a long term deal.

Manly — Pittsburgh
Laughing stocks early on, dominated the 70's, there or thereabouts ever since.

This I can live with

Silly comparison.

At least here I can see the two teams having something in common.

I have always thought the bills were very much like the eels - haven't done anything in years yet have produced many greats if the game

Packers deserve something better than an aussie rules team. The idea of the NFL existing just to keep cricketers fit and active in winter is just wrong.

Has to be Packers and Knights - small parochial town, all about the town/members, led to glory by a flawed genius in the 90s...
