Australia Vs Rest of the world

I think a lot people raised this issue when the cricket announced their Aus Vs World matches, do you think Rugby League would have the same thing again. It wouldnt be too bad, most of it would include Kiwis, Poms and maybe a few French, PNG, but Australia would win anyway.

I remember the last clash was a close one, the World team had the likes of Lam, Connolly, McCracken, Bai, but was only when the ARL competition was split in 1997.

I wonder what the world ROW team would be if they picked a side now, if it was a true world side (barring injuries/suspensions):

1. Hazem El Masri (lebanese)
2. Brian Carney (Ire)
3. Keith Senior (Eng)
4. Paul Whaturia (NZL)
5. Marcus Bai (PNG)
6. Benji Marshall (NZL)
7. Danny McGuire (Eng)
8. Stuart Fielden (Eng)
9. Kerion Cunningham (Wales)
10. Ruben Wiki (NZL)
11. Jerome Gussiett (Fra)
12. Tony Puletua (NZL)
13. Paul Sculthorpe (Eng)

14. Damel Fakir (Fra)
15. Fui Fui Moi Moi (Ton)
16. Dene Halatua (NZL)
17. Matt Petersen (USA)

Not a bad side, but if they did pick a ROW it'll mainly be players on form made of mostly NZL, ENG, and a few other nations.

1997:
Australia 28 (TIm Brasher 2, Terry Hill, Steven Menzies, Matthew Sing tries; Andrew Johns 3 from 4, John Simon 1 from 1 goals) beat Rest of the World 8 (Darren Rameka, Jarrod McCracken tries; Craig Innes 0 from 2 goals) at Suncorp Stadium. - Half time: 6-8.

It was close till half time...then Australia ran away with it....only drew a crowd of 14K as well....

Not sure if such a concept would ever become popular with Australian fans...

El Masri is an Australian.

He's already played a test for them.

But if they did bend the rules abit I suppose he could play for them.

Played a fair few internationals for Lebanon in recent years. In addition, he has indicated that if forced to choose, he would play for Lebanon.

Peterson and El Masri are Australian. They just play for their other countrys to help our rugby league.

Not a good idea at the moment cause it would just be AUS vs NZ & GB. Maybe down the track when France and PNG start producing more class players it would be worth a shot.

No, no and no. If (most likely) the World XIII lose, where does that leave RL?

The creditability that International RL is slowly gaining back would all be ruined over some stupid match. I hope they never do this.

A Rest of the World team is a great concept - the problem in cricket was that it was poorly implemented

a) they picked players on reputation and not on form.
b) they staged the games at the wrong time - most World players were not match fit or were exhausted.

A ROTW team would be great in League if they played the World Cup Champions and the game was held within a week or fortnight of the RLWC final.

Well, tbh, Australia will most likely win the WC. People will say, fair enough, it was an even comp, Aus was the better team. Cool.

But when the go out and bet a ROTW side, thats when creditability walks away.

I couldn't see the point of the cricket super series when they announced it, other than an attempt at making a quick buck...

I'd rather we work toward competitive regular international footy and world (and other) cup competitions. While the team composition is interesting to think about, I don't think we need the fixture.
