Bagging Billy Slater

Spot on champ.

Noone can argue with Slaters attacking ability but he folds like a deck of cards under pressure. He also has a pretty crap sense of reality on the field too, why he took on the side line in that play I will never know. I dont think he has a good footy brain at all.

He folds like a freshly pressed sheet.

If on-field brain snaps are permissable when selecting the Australian team, why not put Jason Ryles as the much needed reserve Prop, instead of yet another 2nd rower.

Fitzgibbon?!?

Lockyer was brilliant but he was first and foremost a safe fullback. Slater is not, particularly under pressure and has done nothing to suggest otherwise.

Lockyer was a Kiwi speed hump. Joe Gulavau washed Lockyer's guts off his windscreen after he scored a test try once.

Slater's fine under pressure.

As for cutie setting up tries in the NRL, why can't he do it at test level? Because it's a different level. cutie never set up many tries in the last Origin series. He didn't set up many tries in the World Cup either.

And Ben Kusto has set up tries in the NRL. cutie = Ben Kusto.

This thread is hilarious.
Does Slater even know a fullbacks job????

He is so used to Australia over-running people he thinks its his personal "free running glory" post.

A fullbacks job is as the last line of defence, above all else. Lockyer was 1000 times better than Slater as a Fullback (and as a player. He was awesome in the final I thought. He is almost telepathic in his reading of the game!)

Slater got run over on the goal line for two tries, and with his ridiculous lazy "outside option" and then even worse "suicide pass" gifted NZ the win. I would curse my juniors (and do) for making errors like that.

Lance Hohaia on the other did his fullbacks job, holding up Israel Folau in goal with a heroic FB tackle.

Slater = lose.

Wank wank wank Hunt would've never done that wank wank wank run the ball back hard.

Would Hunt have set up the 2 tries Slater did?

He sure as sh*t wouldn't have set up one for NZ. Slater also nearly bombed that first try with his nospam29.

Yes, 18 months of football since a MOM. My point - since then, what has he done?

18 months ago SBW was the codes MVP. 18 months ago Matt King played Origin. 18 months ago, O'Meley, Mason and SBW wore Dogs jumpers. 18 months ago, the Cowpats were happy with Graham Murray. 18 months ago, Brad Fittler was a water boy. 18 months ago, Rennie Matua was the next big thing for the Blues. 18 months ago, no one had heard of Israel Folau. 18 months ago, Andrew Johns was Knights captain. 18 months ago, Petero was a happy Bronco. 18 months ago, David Williams was in the Eels junior system. 18 months ago, Steve Turner was a contracted Titan.

Long time ago, wasn't it!

To everyone who has been doing it over the last 24 hours

Get a f**king grip

This guy has been the standout player in the NRL this year by a mile and was a standout in the WC up until the final. He has one bad game and everyone wants to crucify him

He didn't even have a bad game... one mistake and he gets blamed for the loss, most likely because of the club side he plays for.

The Aussies should have really beaten NZ by 20 points given the talent they had on the field, so it clearly didn't all come down to one bad Slate pass.

Err what about the 2 trys that went in straight over the top of him. I thought a Fullback was meant to stop that? Or maybe you have forgotten what a fullback is for as well as Billy...

This Slater-Hunt crap is getting ridiculously circular.

Brett Stewart FTW. I refuse to bag Slater out but his mistake was the straw that broke the camel's back.

I guess by the end of the season all the Australia injuries and AWOLs took their toll: Brett Stewart, Kurt Gidley, Campese, Gasnier, Hodges, Bird, and Mason.

Why is setting up tries so important from a fullback, so much so that it takes away from the ability to stick to the fundamentals of a fullback?

I fully acknowledge he's a top player, altho that was an almighty brain fade last night, much better to take it over the sideline in that situation.

I cant stand the guy however, absolute trackhead of the highest order, so was happy to see him f**k up

I dont think most people are blaming slater for the game (although given the timing and selfishness of the play, massive impact), as I have said that play is the worst I have seen in a green and gold jumper.

It may be time to lose the chip on the shoulder, the club he plays for has absoluitely no impact on this discussion and that play.

Slater is still the best fullback in the game atm. The only other fullback challenging him right now is Stewart... Hunt is 'safe' but is also slow and overrated.

Over-reaction or what? Slater has been Australia's matchwinner throughout the tournament and the best player in the NRL throughout 08.

He made one MASSIVE error of judgement but prior to that had set up both of the Roos' opening tries. Without those tries the Kiwis might have taken control earlier.

Blaming Slater for the Smith/Hohaia tries is just pathetic.

Face it, NZ were the better/more determined team on the night.

On one of those occassions the player broke through Petros (hohaia) tackle to score, the second smith broke Fitzgibbon and stewart and slater couldn't stop him either. Billy's fault though. You are right.

I can't believe the amount of people bagging Billy Slater, calling him arrogant, a crap player etc. topped off with jealous Broncos fans trying to claim Karmichael Hunt is a better player based on one stupid decision.

Billy Slater has absolutely dominated the NRL and World Cup all year. He made an extremely stupid mistake... which only cost us 4 points... Lockyer made a mistake which also cost us 4 points, Thurston cost us 4 points in goal kicking etc.
Had Lockyer not bombed that try, and Thurston not missed those goals... we could have been up 18-0 and most likely run away with the game. Darren Lockyer bombing that try was a far bigger turning point in the game.

Great post.

I don't like Slater- like most, I think he's a grub.

Perhaps in retrospect, Hunt may have had a more suitable temperament for that scenario. But then again, who would have imagined that the Aussies were to face that scenario.

Slater was the player of the season and arguably the tournament- to not have him starting at fullback would have been a crime.

Not really. You're just ignorant and you can't admit it.

And it wasn't your point. Your point was a suggestion that Hunt had never received MoM in the international arena.
