Latham has been pretty handy as an opener prior to Australia...but I'm much in the same camp. See him to be a bit of a Watling.

Yep, I really like him as a test player, and hope he can develop in the way it looks like he should.

In odis he could be a good foil for Guptill, and scores at a reasonable clip - but given our shallow depth of talent, I think we have to be innovative - and while it's no longer terribly innovative, I do really like a blast against the new ball with Williamson at 3 (he's used to opening if it doesn't work) - de Grandhomme perhaps? Obviously there's a fat turd playing for CD that remains worth a look if the team culture can accommodate? Maybe Munro, and I can't for the life of me see why they don't use Nicol in 20:20

Obviously having seen him as a kid, I am a Phillips fan, he could be the longer term option opening and keeping - few good keeper bats coming through.

Also really want Anderson back - I know he's not bowling yet, nor has he found much form - but f**k me does he hit the ball hard - has James Brayshaw seen him?

I wouldn't promote one of those three for Latham, who I think should be persevered with, as JJ says, potential foil for Guptill. If I was to pick I'd send Neesh up the order as an experiment. I'm a bit over Munro, who just looks like an aimless slog merchant. Grand House needs to stay down the order.

This is where we really miss Ryder, it's too bad it didn't work out.

ok then...Boxing Day team selection.

I'll go-

Guptill
Latham
Williamson
Broom
Neesham
De Grandhomme
Santner
Ronchi
Southee
Henry
Boult

No room for Munro

Just read this - interesting, I've never been a huge Wagner fan but at the end of the day the team is always better with him in it. Not long ago Boult's passport was stamped "not for white ball cricket", I do wonder if NZ cricket have learned.... If he's not a better option than Ferguson I am not here - and probably Henry too who like Southee and Boult is a new ball bowler - and anecdotally has been woeful beyond his first spell

From the squad, I'd be tempted to go (of course I know Latham will play and one of Broom, Neesham, Munro, or de Grandhomme will miss out) - is expect Ferguson will play too:

Guptill
Williamson
Broom
Munro
Neesham
de Grandhomme
Ronchi
Santner
Southee
Henry
Boult

But again, I wonder if that any alternative team would be better with Wagner

Munro looking aggressive

What people need to realise is that 30 is an excellent score in NZ :D

A real day for the underachievers today. Latham 137. Munro 87. Neesham 3 for 18 (thus far)

Santner and Ferguson are going to have to bowl 10 here...at least 1 of them. Perhaps Williamson should bowl a few.

Does anyone else feel like Santner is now officially in that category of the allrounder who is neither good enough with the bat or the ball?

Fergusson and Santner out. Henry and de Grandhomme in, for me.

I'd be tempted to try Chapman soon he's better at all three skills than Santner

Ferguson is not up to it IMO the obsession with speed which he loses at a Siddle like rate is dumb

Shane Jurgenson. He must be an Australian insider. He was pleased with how they bowled and thinks Ferguson did great in Australia. They bowled a series of half tracker pies and massive leg side wides but all is good for Jurgenson

Hopefully though the Munro naysayer wowsers can get with the program. Just because you hit the ball hard doesn't make you a bad bat.
