That's a good top six, Meth. Pity selector Vettori wants to bat himself at 6 and Paddy is there to basically give him a pat on the back and little else.
I have a problem with the #7 concept, to be honest. Broom and Stewart, who have both been in very good domestic first class form are trialled extensively in limited overs cricket at 7. They're expected to either save us from 70 for 5 or belt a quick fire 60, or else they're no good. Both of them are top 3-4 bats for their province who are used to establishing themselves and giving themselves an opportunity. 7 is a spot where an all rounder should bat.
It should be
1 Top order bat
2 Top order bat
3 Top order bat
4 Top order bat
5 Top order bat
6 Top order bat
7 All rounder
8 All-rounder/bowling favoured all-rounder
Instead we have
1 Top order bat
2 Top order bat
3 Top order bat
4 Top order bat
5 All-rounder
6 Bowling based all arounder
7 Top order bat
Batsmen should be going in ahead of bowling options. I actually feel sorry for Shanan Stewart. He has performed very well for Canterbury for two or three years and is being asked to play as an all-rounder without any bowling responsibilities. The Australians often go with 7 top order bats with a couple of part time bowlers in their top 7, but rest assured, all the top 7 are top order batsmen. They're top four bats for their states.
With the current touring squad, I'd much rather see
1 Brendan McCullum
2 Jesse Ryder
3 BJ Watling
4 Ross Taylor
5 Kane Williamson
6 Shanan Stewart
If it's Williamson or Stewart who gets the 6 spot, I bet they'd feel far more comfortable batting with blokes who are used to setting up an innings domestically. The way they're structured at the moment, they might as well stick Tim Southee and Andy McKay ahead of Stewart in the batting line up just to make it more of a mickey mouse affair than what it is currently.
