If the NRL don't allow the WCC and 9s to be apart of the suspension then play Barba in those games and make a mockery of the NRL.

You can't have it both ways. They either count towards it or he is free to play in them.

The NRL need to set the precedent and decide what counts towards suspension.

Doesn't matter if it's suspension for a high shot or drugs or beating up your missus.

Either the trials and nines etc count or they don't. Full stop.

So f**king inconsistent

& trials. They normally count for a judiciary imposed suspension.

Stop looking for negatives in a positive.

Barba would be nicely have around for the first half of the season but he's not needed then. He's needed in the run home and in the semis more. There are advantages to him not playing early not least being Holmes et al get experience in other positions. Makes the team stronger overall. Barca isn't going to turn to mush missing 12 games. He could get an injury in the first game and we get the same result.

I'm just happy he'll be back at all. Don't care what the NRL do or say, you can't argue with idiots

Sharks Grand Final winning fullback Ben Barba has agreed to a new one-year contract with the club for the 2017 season.

Barba, who featured in all 27 Sharks matches in 2016, scoring 15 tries and delivering a team-high 18 try assists, has worked diligently on making his return to the NRL a reality and is continuing his well-being program.

The club met with Barba and his management to discuss the new contract proposal for consideration by the NRL.

The contract will be submitted to the NRL for approval and registration.

Should his contract be ratified and accepted the club will work with the NRL Integrity Unit to determine a time frame for Barba’s integration back into the Sharks NRL program and in relation to his return to training.

f**k Talkin sport are always negative to us.

Heaps just said this is all a bit too suspicious for me.

Well the NRL still have to ratify the contract..... blah blah.

If it was the Bulldogs it would be a different spin.

"Raelene Castle weaving her magic with recruitment, they've played this one out well....."

It was only the last NRL match they viewed in the NRL..... lol.

I bet they'd remember if Gallen did something. The guy farts and they want an explanation.

How long did they go on about that tackle from Gallen in the NRL all stars game last year on that Souths player who's made of glass.... yeah no bias there.

It appears the NRL are making it up as they go along again with regards to punishing us - it's like they decide a punishment and then try to make sure it has the absolute maximum impact.
How can they say he can't train with us? First of all they say it's because he hasn't got a ratified contract - yet Vidot has been training with Gold Coast, Foran with the Warriors and lots of other players of the years have trained with teams looking for an opportunity to impress.
Then there's a question over whether trials, 9s and WCC - these games have counted previously for other players who are banned, yet it appears the NRL are now trying to say these don't count for Barbas ban.... how can that be so? As someone else said - if they don't count, then surely he can play in them?

Trials never used to count towards a suspension until recently but the players association agued if you can get suspended from a trial, why shouldn't it count as a week of a suspension.

Hard to argue with that theory.

Hahahahahaaaaa...gold.

We are the new broncs.

Do whatever we want.

This was never ending any other way.

When Lyall Gorman came to the club our coach was suspended and we were less than cactus.

Look at us now.

Benny got busted. Lyall steps in and just writes the script for how this would all play out.

Today was the end of the final act.

LG - lifes good.

Love the way the media turn this into a story about us possibly losing Holmes...

How Ben Barba's new deal with the Sharks could influence the future of Valentine Holmes

Sharks fullback Ben Barba will be allowed to start training with the club only a few weeks before his 12-match suspension for testing positive to cocaine comes to an end.

In a development that could influence the future of winger Valentine Holmes, Cronulla confirmed on Wednesday that their troubled custodian from the grand final victory over Melbourne last October had signed a one-year deal for the remainder of this season.

First, the salary he is being paid will have to be of market value. Barba was set to receive about $600,000 this season until his contract was torn up after the positive test. The NRL will expect him to be signed under this contract for about half that amount.

It will forbid Auckland Nines, All Stars and World Club Challenge games being counted as part of his ban.

With the Sharks having a bye in round 13, the earliest he could return would be the round-14 clash against Melbourne in a Thursday night match at Southern Cross Group Stadium.

It is understood League Central will also block Barba from rejoining the club in any capacity until a few weeks before any possible return to the field – something at odds with remarks from Sharks chief executive Lyall Gorman to Fairfax Media on Tuesday.

Asked if Barba would start training as soon as the contract was registered, Gorman said: "Correct. Part of his evolution was that at the right time he integrates back to the professional environment around his teammates and with full-time access to the club. That's part of the evolution. Our view is the hunger and drive is there for Benny to get back to where he's been and even higher, on and off the field."

Barba's signing could have implications for Holmes, who comes off contract at the end of this season and is already garnering interest from other clubs.

Holmes wants to play fullback and his management, Pacific Sports Management, knows he won't earn big dollars unless he moves off the wing. Interestingly, Pacific – which is headed by brothers Gavin and Chris Orr –also manages Barba.

Hailing from Townsville, Holmes has attracted strong interest from the Cowboys as a possible replacement down the line for Lachlan Coote. North Queensland will also lose emerging superstar Kaylan Ponga to the Knights in 2018.

Said Gorman: "Our focus for quite a while has been ensuring Val remains a long-term player at this club and we continue to explore those opportunities with Val and his manager."

It's a tricky situation for the Sharks as they attempt to keep both players, unsure how Barba will return from suspension and knowing that Holmes is a star of the future who is likely to shine in the No.1 jumper in his absence.

Gorman said he was pleased with the progress Barba had made since returning from rehab in Thailand.

No alcohol ban will be placed on Barba, but he can expect additional testing from outside the club, which is often the case when a player has tested positive to any substance. A third strike to illicit substances would probably end his playing career.

"No, we won't be putting any alcohol bans in place," Gorman said. "But there's a very supportive program in place. He's in great spirits. He made a choice that he regrets. We're very confident he'll come back. The part of the whole renewal process was about Benny stepping out of the game. It was a mutual termination. To step out of the fish bowl and pressures and responsibilities and the visibility of the game. We've worked very heavily with him and put a lot of support around him. We were never going to turn out back on him."

Great backbone from Lyall!

Tell the NRL if you are serious about player rehabilitation of course he should be allowed to train with the team.

Absolute bullshyte from the NRL.

As for Barba's value it is not simply halving what he was going to get.

As soon as he got his second strike his value goes down considerably because one more strike and he is gone from the game for good.

When that Souths bloke got 22 weeks for bashing his missus, was he allowed to train with the club the whole time??

What normally happens? If they are suspended for foul play then they can train etc.

NRL needs overhaul, the problem is that dont have set rules.

Needs fresh look at with no links to any club but that will never happen
