Biggest rumours I've heard for who will be playing the Joker are either Tim Roth or Crispin Glover. Either of these guys I think would be great.

Thunderstruck is right, they restarted the Batman series, as Batman and Robin pretty much ruined them, they had no choice but to restart.

As for the sequel, it is going to stay close to the comic, rumor has it that Joker, Harvey Dent and The Riddler may be in the next one. There is also a new female lead, forget the characters name though. Rumor has it that Mark Hammil is being tossed around for the role of Joker.
