Tezza lol, we don't tell Souths who they can release
We have had a great success rate at signing contracted players just ask Ozzie.

Champion would be a great signing.
Forget Luke and inglis

Have fauth in Anthony Mitchell, I think he'll be special and as for Inglis, don't want him anywhere near my club

Last I checked, Inglis was unsigned.

you honestly think Inglis would sign for Parra now????

Not a chance

Would you want to be paying 500k+ for a centre who ends up at your club because it was the only place left he had to go???????

I'd rather sign Champion and Lowe for the Inglis money

The way I figure it, Lowe and Champion will not make a difference to our chances next year. Neither will Inglis. But for 2012, 2013, etc etc, I see more value in Inglis. I believe that Hayne, Mannah, Poore, Horo and perhaps Mortimer, along with a mysterious halfback coupled will be the players to lead us for the next 5 years at least. Throw in Inglis, and I believe that is an excellent core group of players to build a team around.

Im not sure if the NRL would allow this, but I would front load Inglis' contract as much as possible for next year and then have it considerably smaller for the rest.

Im not considering 2011 a lost cause, anything can happen in this game, but I believe Inglis is a better long term investment. Stephen Kearney is willing to go into next year with the current crop of players, so am I. 2012 and after, no way, there needs to be considerable recruitment.

If we get him or not, I wont lose any sleep. He wont shorten our odds for next year considerably.

FMD. Why would Ozzie say we are not intending to sign Champion>?

Has he had a look at our centre pairings?

Ossie went a bit early in signing Whataiura it seems...

Oh well, there'd been so many players saying no to us lately I don't really blame him getting one signed up when he could. The price though seems a long term deal on a player like Champion.

The Cowboys, Eels and Melbourne Storm are understood to be the only clubs with money left to sign any of the Rabbitohs players.
what the what????

i thought they were projected to be $1.4m over before inglis and a few others left. surely, if anything, they would be barely under the cap now.

why? it was reported that subject to a medical tomorrow he would sign to a very modest contract, we would still have a great deal of money under the cap for all three if we want them but the question remains with Crocker and Champion being on very lucrative backended deals with their current club, would it be worth it?

That`s not too bad a backline, really. With Atkins, Hicks, Walker to come in for injuries or poor form. Then in 2012 we buy a top-class halfback. Doesn`t look so bad, now. Let`s hope our new coach is any good.

How does that work, Stagger? If we wanted to buy Champion, would we have to take over the remainder of his current contract? - which is apparently one year. Would Souths have to subsidise us to some extent?
Let`s say he was on a three year deal at, say, $200,000 per year. If he was paid $100,000 the first year and the second year, they`d owe him $400,000 for this third and final year. So if we want to buy him, do we have to pay him that $400,000 plus whatever deal we offer him? Is that how it works?

yes, basically we would have to take over the contract, champion needs to be paid out either way however souths may agree to subsidise us to sweeten the deal and make it more attractive, the same with Crocker or any other being shopped around who are currently on deals.

the NRL have souths by short and curlies at the moment, if they want Inglis they're going to have to do some serious juggling and find some willing parties to assist and at the moment Parra, Cowboys and Penrith are the only clubs who are currently under the cap but I would imagine that Parra are in a better bargaining position then the other 2, it may well be worth sitting back and playing hard ball with them, either way something has to give sooner or later.

we're in a decent position when it comes to these souths players. No use getting screwed over and paying OTT for someone just so souths can clear some $$$ off their books

Stagger, the nrl doesn't only have souths by the balls, but Melbourne as well. They are sweating on the inglis to souths deal to go through. They are the only team that has inglis on it's roster for 2011. Souths don't have to shed players nor pay inglis next year. Storm do. If storm want to play for points they have no choice but to shed players.

MAYBE (and this is just a stab in the dark; I don't know how these things work or how Ossie's mind works, but I do know Ossie is an ex-politician and player manager, so he'd be pretty wily) what Ossie told Souths is that Champion's price was way too high with an ulterior motive: if they lower their price and offer somebody else up in the deal, we can swoop and get two quality players instead of just one.

Maybe. I don't know. I don't think Ossie would knock back the chance to sign a 23-year old future superstar without a big reason...

i'm sure i read somewhere through the week that Ossie had come out and said that it was the $ value that made him not interested in Champion. why would we want to pay the full freight for Souths players at the moment?

yep, Ossie appears to have made it perfectly clear that SK doesn't want him at this stage.
