Wow, I've found there's 3 things in life you can count on 1) death 2) taxes, and 3) BBC whinging and claiming the end of the world any chance he gets.
I'm not happy about losing Beau Scott, but with the emergence of De Belin, Merrin etc someone had to go.
Beau Scott came to us as a 2nd rate player and in the Red V he developed into a marquee player. He's given us great service over the years, helped us to 2 Minor Premierships and that elusive Premiership. He was offered another contract, but elected to take more money to go elsewhere. At this stage of his career I can understand his desire to set himself up financially and I wish him all the best.
Personally, at this stage I'd much rather lose Beau Scott than Creagh, Young, De Belin, Prior or Merrin so I applaud Doust's handling of the negotiations and prioritizing the retention of our younger juniors and club stalwarts.
Unfortunately, in this day and age of the salary cap, winning a Premiership causes player values to go up and squads to be torn apart. Happens to everyone. I mean, we had something like 8 or 9 players play in State of Origin last year. We simply can't keep them all. I think Manly fans are even worse off then us right now by facing the reality that they will probably lose one of their favorite sons in Brett Stewart.
We have the most fertile junior base in the NRL, we lose players, we develop more. We don't need to play cheque book Rugby League. We have 2 emerging forwards by the names of Merrin and De Belin that other clubs would break the bank for if they had the chance, so let's just cout our losses with a guy like Beau Scott.
Beau Scott was targeted last year by the Bennett Knights..However, they couldn't accommodate him under the cap due to his price target..Beau wanted to come to the Knights anyway with Boyd however he had to wait 12 months for that wish as advised by Mr Bennett to do so...Dragons knew this..
Beau Scott is overrated. He has always had poor handling. Sure, he is aggressive but don't you want that from a backrower. He does not bend the line backwards in either attack or defence. He was a modest player bought from Cronulla who Bennett turned into a good player. No more than that. He is worth about $250K a season at best. Good luck to him for taking the moeny on offer. Recrutiment like this will kill the Knights. He is no where near a marquee player and they will find managing the salary cap a killer. Our priority is Merrin, De Bellin, Stockwell, King, Rein and these kids. What is super important now is how we spend the rivers of cash we are going to have now. Sign a quality halfback at any cost. My biggest issue with announcements like this is the impact it can have on the morale. We have only played one game and we are losing a good first grader for next year. NRL fans hate this aspect of the game and in this respect the AFL trade period is a much cleaner process and it is conducted after the season is over. This is a blight on our game and robs supporters of teams. It is not the players fault, or the player agents fault, it is the fault of the NRL and it must be addressed.
Really??
I am not as viral toward the guy as some people on here, but you would prefer Prior over Scott.
+1.....and at half the price, Prior looks the goods most weeks. Can't deny his sprit and red v-ness.Why do people keep thinking its as cut and dry as "who would you prefer"???
Beau just got signed for around 2 million over 4 years. Prior wouldn't cost half that.
We could spend that 2 million over 4 years on a good half back or fullback. You spend 500k a season on match winners not average back rowers.
Well stated......like yourself Ive racked up over 5 decades, but im not sure you get to keep the long term locals anymore , and that in itself detracts to a degree from the spirit of the club.....my view is that if you can secure some quality outsiders then that in itself attracts the talented home growns to stay...anyhow thats just my opinionA couple of Thoughts the late great Robert Stone used to live by a saying Billy Smith tought him " which is forwards win games and backs only decide by how much". The thinking behind that is forwards provide the space that the backs make the magic with
. No space no magic even with the benjis of this world if they have no room . The other bad news is we will Never have a slater or a marshall at the dragons we simply wont pay the money for players like that . Which brings us back to developing great juniors again and when we do our priority should be keeping them . After going to footy for over 5 decades I've learn't a simple truth buying outsiders means paying overs and also not having the sort of spirit that long term quality locals give a side. Btw if tough backrowers were a dime a dozen every club would have some.
Well i guess it explains why he was so bad last week, his mind wasnt on the job but on the fact that he was about to crap on his mates and all the Dragons fans.
Im gutted as well....I guess we have to move on though, .....I hope for our teams sake that his intesity doesnt drop off like Boyds did IMO.....lets see if last weeks effort was a just a one off.................Well i guess it explains why he was so bad last week, his mind wasnt on the job but on the fact that he was about to crap on his mates and all the Dragons fans.
Thing about Bennett is he doesnt pay overs, thing about the Tinkler ran Knights is they can offer healthy third party payments so you can bet your last dollar on Scott not being on anywhere near those reported figures, at least not in the salary cap book. A big loss for the Dragons and an even bigger gain for the Knights. And I find it hypocritical how some fans are bagging Newcastle for not having faith in their juniors when it'll be Stewart/s who'll be coming in next year lol how many non-locals did Dragons sign this year alone ffs, wow. At least 4/6 of Newcastle's 2012 signings were Knights coming back home. Newcastle have plenty of local products in their team already and the best crop of juniors in the NRL who are coming through and are on the brink of first grade
