Sticking someone like Hunt in reserve grade for the remainder of the season will send a message and might just deter other players requesting an early release from a contract, and not only from our rabble.

We gain nothing from releasing him mid season. If anything, it encourages other players to request the same.

I agree with you.

For the Dragons to come out of this on the right end they have to play hardball with Ben Hunt and negotiate with the club he is set to spend the next few years at. Broncos can only offer money, which in the short term does nothing for their football department.

Unspoken in all of this is the affect Flanagan will have in terms of player retention and attraction.

He seems like a pretty shit bloke and has demonstrated some pretty shit behaviours in the past.

I think his appointment is a ticking time bomb, and it's only his media mates that are stopping this being a PR disaster.

They won't drop him , they will release him. Its fine for clubs to sack players willy nilly when they're not happy , I have no probs with players evening the ledger.

At the end of the day, Ben Hunt should blame himself for the position he finds himself in. He signed a two year contract extension back in October last year, less than nine months ago.

The thing is, the Dragons have been a basketcase for a fair while. They were a rabble when Hunt signed that extension, and today, less than nine months later, my club is still dysfunctional. Nothing has changed from the Dragons side of the equation.

However what has changed is that Hunt's former club is in a position to win a premiership. They are equal top of the ladder after 15 games, whilst his current club ( for now) is languishing equal second last.

If Hunt didn't sign that 2 year extension, then his life would be less complicated. Last year, he could've waited another month, and start dealing with other clubs as he entered the final year of his contract.

So what should the Dragons to do with Ben Hunt? Play hardball, but fair with him. The club should not release him this year. He honours his ORIGINAL contract, but they can let him go before the contract extension begins.

If Dragons let Hunt go now in these circumstances where he doesn't honour his original contract, with an extension coming up, then it could set a dangerous precedent and the integrity of the comp will be questioned.

If a club wants to get rid of a player, they have to pay out that contract.
If a player wants to break their contract, yes the club gets to stop paying them, but they still have to pay that money to other players to meet the salary cap rules.

That may help good teams, but it doesn't help shit teams that are struggling with recruitment.

We aren’t buying anyone of quality this year. He has a contract for two more years. We can release him from those two years and let the little sook play reserve grade for the rest of this year without losing anything. This year is shot anyway.
