its soooooo easy to sit back and say, we should sign X before Y - but who says we aren't f'n trying? contract processes are bloody long drawn out sh*t these days - it'd be hard work for a club to try and juggle everything and sign who they want when they want - gotta take the options as they come forward ..... i can only assume ben smith came at a pretty reasonable rate for that long - probably opted for a long deal on less money to secure a longer future than trying to cash in quickly .... i'll back Hage's decision for now - he's done pretty well so far

What a waste of Money. To compound that 4 FREAKN YEARS!!!   FOUR YEARS ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

It's funny how the article says that Bens a nice bloke but nothing about his playing ability. AND HE IS A NICE BLOKE don't get me wrong but he's slower than David Vaeleiki and my Grandma beat Vaeleiki in a running race.

I love ya Hagan but your killing me softly. Tell me he's not more than 50k a year surely.....

If you keep up to speed you would know that Hags is going to play him in the back row. He has enough speed to play there and he might go great. I can see him putting on some big hits and he might be a good player for Dave Fairleigh to work with.

how many games has he played in the second row?

Assuming that he will go well there is just crazy.

He has done nothing since the second half of the 2005 season.

Very lucky to get such a long exstension IMO. I could understand maybe one year....but such a long deal??

An absoulte joke, and just the fact that people are disagreeing with the clubs decisision says it all.

There are always players comign through all the time, to sign an average centre/hopefully second rower to a four year deal borders on absolute stupidity, unless you're an international or state player 4 year deal should not be given.

I could've lived with a one year deal to see if his knee held up and he adjusted to his new role, but 4 years? unbelieavable.

Gotta agree Ronny, why try to mould him into a second rower when you have guys like Weller and Tony Williams waiting for a chance.

Yep, he didn't even dominate at centre. I could've lived with a one year deal but fair dinkum 4 years?

Didn't we have the same problem of re-signing average players in the early 90's?

and there are people who agree with it, it's all about opinion Ronny...

no one's proven to be right or wrong yet, no one has any idea about the terms and conditions of the contract other than it's a 4 year deal.

I would say that Strider is spot on the money and Benny's decided to drop a few dollers for a longer term deal.

but you couldn't live with a 1 year deal a week ago...it was more like "The greatest moment in the clubs history, if we got rid of him"

true, i did say that, and i did say he shouldn't be re-signed, however i could've gottenover the fact if it were one year, but 4 years? you know your self that the decision is moronic to say the least, and don't suggest otherwise!!

have we seen the contract? do we know the terms, conditions, clauses etc????

On the surface it probably looks extreme but until you look at the bloody thing who knows whether it's extreme or not, for all we know the contract could be heavilly incentive based.

The same board that didn't re-sign Andrew Ryan, Jason Cayless etc? the same board that hasn't delievered us a premiership? the same board that is struggling it seems in all facets of runing a club? the same board that will have problems securing Riddell and Finch? yet re-sign an average centre to a four year deal?

btw

Eele, it may well be incentive based, and there may well be alot of clauses, but 4 years regardless is just stupid!!

If we loose a Tony Williams or KK as the result of this i don't think i could live with it, particulary if they go on to be superstars, and Ben is having ongoing problems at securing a spot in first grade.
