Benji Marshall overrated?

Just wondering.....do non Tiger's fans rate him as highly as Tiger's fans do? I for one reckon he is one of the most overrated players in our comp today. Sure, he has the magic in him and can produce it spasmodically....but he has a lot more flat spots and goes missing in games more than any other player who is rated at or around his level.

Comparing him to Lockyer or Thurston, who also are supposed to lead their teams attack week in week out.....he doesn't even come close to them.

Sorry if all this has been done before....just watching him playing in the 4Nations just made me think again about how he never does enough to deserve the raps he gets.

I think his great but not brillant, up their with your GI's, Cooper Cronks.

But definately not in the Billy Slater, Lockyer, Smith & Joey category.

One of the most popular players in the game, he's responsible for making many many kids interested in RL. But even if he was offcontract after 2012 I'd still rather my team chase Cronk for 2013.

His ability to produce fraekish plays isn't overrated and he's improved his decision making, but his overall general game is nowhere near the others you mention in the classical sense.

he is what he is and he's dangerous at all times, but he's always going to have a mistake in him.

That and he's a whiny little show pony. But he's certainly not alone there either.

How come whenever a good player is out of form these threads are always here to turn up?

Top of the NRL in try assists and near the top in line break assists. Pretty good for a person who supposedly plays 5 minutes a game.

YEAH ! NAH !

Bunji is a good player, people pay money to just see him play, people don't pay money to just see cronk play.

The Tigers' game suits Benji. The like to move the ball around early, attack wide, they have good centres. The Kiwis can't play that game. He needs to adapt and put a lot more emphasis on field position.

He's not consistently brilliant every week - but how many players are? Awful this morning though

Benji is the tigers game, the reason they play this kind of football is because they have Benji.

Without Benji, they would not be playing the same time of football, nor would they be so competitive.

He's good don't get me wrong. As a 1/2 he is terrible. Can't or won't bomb. Doesn't have a long kicking game goes the fancy play too often.

Maybe that style suits a fb but compare his basic stats (kicks, bombs, long kicks etc) to most 1/2's in the NRL & his about mid table. The flair gets him the support etc

That's my point, ceagle.....I don't think his current form is any different to what we see most weeks throughout the year. I just don't think he deserves the raps he gets. Too many stupid errors and inconsistency in his game. And not just this morning.

They wouldn't be able to play that game without speed and proper outside backs. That's the point. The Kiwis have very little out wide, even at the best of times.

If he played as a pure 6 with no more than a secondary kicking responsibility I think he would actually be more highly rated. Laurie Daley used to play that role and he's comfortably regarded as a great, and Benji can do plenty of things Laurie couldn't.

Of course he is overrated, especially by the Sydney media and especially so by many at C.9. Where he is treated like Royalty.

Fir dinkum I would swear that some in the Sydney media are having a love affair with Benji. In there small minds Benji can do no wrong.

Thier is no doubt the guy has ability, but he is no where near the grat player that some like ti believe he is.

over-rated????
tigers apparntly has the weakest forward pack in the comp according to a lot of people on here and we only have lawrence who people rate in the backs and he missed half the games this year, yet tigers still made the finals

i dont see how hes over-rated

I dont think he is overated at all, given that absolutely no one rates him!

I do think he is the best ball running pivot in the game, and among the top 5 attacking weapons. Wests, without him, would be screwed. And so would NZ.
