Benji Marshall overrated?

Hate the pants-jizzing that goes with him, but most of the time this year he had Lui pairing with him. Put a decent halfback outside him and he can be a destroyer of worlds.
That's why i'm shocked that everyone is surprised that NZ are playing like crap. They have a running 5/8 paired with a running 5/8.

He is over-rated but that doesn't mean he isn't a world-class player, much like with Jarryd Hayne and Josh Dugan.

I rate Benji very highly.

As an allround footballer he is fantastic.

Great player. Exciting to watch. Fans love him. Team mates love. Other players respect him. He is reasonably articulate. Loves the game. Is a good role model. Well presented and a generally good person. The game can be very proud to have him in its ranks.
Wow! This proves the OP correct. How a player that has great defensive issues can be a fantastic all round player has got me beat.

He does the highest rating things in the game but that's a different thing to being highly rated.

AUS v NZ

JT missed tackles - 6
Benji - 4

Even the 'good' halves are shit tacklers.

He gets rated for his attack. That's why people who jizz over him do so. No one rates his defence, so he cannot be overrated for his defence.

Maybe Hindmarsh would make a better 5/8.............

Wouldn't call him an all-round player.

Can't kick for shit.

His kick in the 2010 preliminary set Soward up to kick the field-goal, & his last kick against Warriors in the semi this year led to the Warriors winning try.

Regularly called the best player in the game numerous times over the past 2-3 years.

He is not, and therefore he is overrated.

IMO he is the Phil Blake of this generation. A highlight reel to die for, but week in week out far too many errors to ever be considered in the top echelon of players.

Exactly - his last two semi final campaigns have ended with heartbreaking losses due to his inability to read the game and play smart football.

Exactly, with Marshall everyone raves about his attack, everyone always mentions watch the videos of him playing touch football. Blah blah.. Everything that people say about marshall is in regards to his attacking game. And he is one of the top attacking players in the game.

So I'd say no he isn't over rated

Heard the commentators calling for him to do something this morning several times, "Were not seeing the benji brilliance" etc etc
Often hear it from nine & fox commentators too.....he doesnt escape when its warranted, however most only get annoyed when commentaries get excited when he does perform
We dont mind chopping down our top players

We dont get these threads about Trent merrin, Aiden Tolman, Matt ballin...players like that

Cant forget his semi final effort vs the Warriors....5th tackle and he runs it. A simple kick to the corner and the Tigers are in control. Instead a turnover and the Warriors score 5 tackles.
Sometimes he has the football brain of Gaba

I have been watching Rugby League for 25 years and Benji Marshall is probably the most exciting player i have ever seen. Whether he makes a mistake or does something no one else can do he is always exciting to watch.

His problem with New Zealand is he needs a guy who can do the kicking and general organizing. He basically needs a Scott Prince or Brett Kimmorley type Halfback.

He isn't overrated there aren't that many exciting players in the game anymore in my opinion. Hayne,Uate,Marshall,Thurston,Slater all of these players bring excitement whenever they touch the ball. Whether they f**k up or not i don't really care.

I would much rather watch halves with the creativity of Benji then the dime a dozen all we do is kick halves like Wallace,Walsh,Hodgkinson,Soward etc.

Players like Marshall make the game exciting to watch and that is why he deserves his praise when people saying he is the best player in the game, they mean it when he is at his best same as Hayne etc.

Minus the game plans. Is far too inconsistent to be labelled the "world's best." Would rather a Foran in my side, at least you know what you get from week to week rather than the occasional touch footy try or flashy cut-out.

So which two players from the Union World Cup........

I have to say SBW and Brad Thorn, the only two I've seen play.

But I wouldn't swap him for both of them if they threw in the All Blacks backline.

I am learning things about Rugby League. Obviously the most valuable attribute is never to make a mistake, or try anything that has even a poofteenth of a percent risk about it. Therefore, Martin Lang was the best player of all time.

Considering all things - age, talent, experience etc, if you put every player on the open market for a 5 year contract, Benji would emerge as the top earner.

Spot on.

Ulysses you do know you can drop kick for field position, it doesnt have to be a field goa attempt, but dont let your ignorance stop your bleating

I am aware of that, but why would you do it for field position when you don't have to?
You can also do it from a 20m restart to go further up the field, just don't put it out on the full or its a penalty to the other side in front of the posts (see Finch in 2000 VS Newcastle).

And Marshall f**king dropped it.
Drop kick my arse.

While Benji has done some dumb things in his career, we must remember this . . . .

He has brought something to the game that has never been seen in NRL before. Never seen before.
Ye may laugh, but his step is about the only "never seen before" trick that I recall in 30yrs of following the game.
In local parks everywhere, junior players and kids were doing their best to immitate it.
I don't recall seeing too many holding both their hands in front of them and making a sieving, shaking motion . . . a la Gasnier.

And it has been said before . . . but make a 15 minute highlight package of Benji in NRL, and compare it to any other player. Anyone.
Game over.

But gee, I wish he would have put some more thought into the final minutes of the Tigers past 2 campaigns.

The kids absolutely love the bloke, that makes him an asset to our game. The fact commentators have a hard on for him may be annoying, but I don't think it's fair to call him overrated.
