News is good on Marshall
Wests Tigers five-eighth Benji Marshall is expected to return to the field in less than two months after scans yesterday revealed only minor damage to his injured right shoulder.
Marshall will see a specialist tomorrow, when he is expected to be cleared of long term damage, with the Tigers hopeful he will be back in as little as six weeks.
It's a piece of much-needed good news for the reigning premiers, who feared they could lose their star playmaker for the rest of the season when he staggered off in the dying stages of the 32-12 loss to North Queensland on Friday night.
"He'll be back this season," coach Tim Sheens said today.
"The original surgery he had in the 0off-season is intact which is pleasing.
"It's another problem with the shoulder - apparently they can dislocate in two different ways.
"The most common way is the way he did it last year which has been fixed and the surgery on the initial scan is intact which means the problem is only minor.
"He may get away with key-hole surgery, if that, rather than a reconstruction.
"The Initial news is pretty solid albeit with a small amount of sub-luxing to the shoulder joint so it's going to have to be stabilised again.
"Whether that's though surgery or work in the gym and just how long that's going to be is up to the doctor."
Sheens said he was confident Marshall would be ready to return in six weeks, although he may wait a full two months to ensure the shoulder regains strength.
Asked if Marshall would be protected in the defensive line when he returns, Sheens said: "We've already been doing that.
"If people are watching what we're doing, it's been happening for two years."
