News is good on Marshall

Wests Tigers five-eighth Benji Marshall is expected to return to the field in less than two months after scans yesterday revealed only minor damage to his injured right shoulder.

Marshall will see a specialist tomorrow, when he is expected to be cleared of long term damage, with the Tigers hopeful he will be back in as little as six weeks.

It's a piece of much-needed good news for the reigning premiers, who feared they could lose their star playmaker for the rest of the season when he staggered off in the dying stages of the 32-12 loss to North Queensland on Friday night.

"He'll be back this season," coach Tim Sheens said today.

"The original surgery he had in the 0off-season is intact which is pleasing.

"It's another problem with the shoulder - apparently they can dislocate in two different ways.

"The most common way is the way he did it last year which has been fixed and the surgery on the initial scan is intact which means the problem is only minor.

"He may get away with key-hole surgery, if that, rather than a reconstruction.

"The Initial news is pretty solid albeit with a small amount of sub-luxing to the shoulder joint so it's going to have to be stabilised again.

"Whether that's though surgery or work in the gym and just how long that's going to be is up to the doctor."

Sheens said he was confident Marshall would be ready to return in six weeks, although he may wait a full two months to ensure the shoulder regains strength.

Asked if Marshall would be protected in the defensive line when he returns, Sheens said: "We've already been doing that.

"If people are watching what we're doing, it's been happening for two years."

Well, here's hoping.

Not just for the Tiges sake - but I think it'd be great if the Kiwis could get a combination of 1 Webb 6 Marshall 7 Jones 9 Faiumu 13 Williams come Tri Nations time. Hopeful thinking, but you then add in Lauitiiti, and there's a lot of creativity to start giving opportunities to the likes of Vatuvei etc.

Good on him. The game needs great players - and personalities like him. He seems like a good bloke too. Not a big head...

Hopefully its true. However I dont know if MX is a reliable source. I'll keep holding my breath until the club issues a release. Or Beccy Wilson makes a report. she's always right on the money.

I'd say the chances of Benji participating in the Trinations at this stage are slim to none, unfortunately.

Big chance that he'll need a bit of clean up surgery after the NRL season is over. And he definately needs an off-season on the weights.

Will be hard to cop for NZ but long term might be for the best.

Glad to hear it. Regardless of what team they play for, its guys with unique talent like Benji that make me love watching league. I also hope that SBW's next comeback is successful too.

Great news that Benji will be back this season, despite the fact it will make winning the comp harder for the 14 other teams.

Marshall is a great player to watch and brings a lot to this competition imo. On top of that, I have great respect for the bloke and have been nothing but impressed with his conduct on and off the field.

From the news that is filtering through, I think that Benji wants surgery and the club wants him to play through. That's just my interpretation of the events that have transpired though. If this is the case, obviously the final decision is and should be up to Marshall. It'll be a disaster for our season though.

yes it would be bad for 2006 and kiss goodbye to back to back...however...if he plays this yr and injures it further it could be the end of Benji Marshall.
I think he should sit out, have surgery and have the chance to play through to 2013.

I think it's very premature to talk of his career ending. And he should play past blood 2013! He'll only be 28.

Marshall warned on postponing surgery
Wednesday, April 12, 2006 - 7:30 PM

Wests Tigers five-eighth Benji Marshall has been warned he risks suffering long-term damage by putting off shoulder surgery until the end of the year.

Marshall met with orthopedic specialist Dr Des Bokor, who told him he had the option of undergoing shoulder surgery immediately or waiting until the end of the NRL season.

The Kiwi international will consult with coach Tim Sheens on Thursday before deciding whether to go under the knife now or wait until the off-season.

"If he has repeated slippings it could cause more harm," said Bokor.

"He could carry it, but if he finds his shoulder slips it could cause more harm.

"If he doesn't flip his shoulder much significantly, then he won't have further damage."

It's understood Marshall could be back for the Tigers in as little as five weeks time should he decide to postpone surgery, although the fact he popped his shoulder back into place immediately has no bearing on the recovery period.

"Whether it stays out or goes back in instantaneously doesn't have a bearing," Bokor said.

"It seems he has a new injury to his shoulder.

"The previous reconstruction does not seem to have been damaged, it's a new injury in a different area of his shoulder.

"The damage he has is in a different area but it is essentially the same principle, just a different part of the joint."

Marshall dislocated his shoulder against North Queensland on Friday night, just five games after having it repaired with reconstructive surgery over the summer.

The gifted playmaker, who has now suffered five shoulder dislocations in his career, said Sheens' input would play a part in his decision.

"I've got to see the coach tomorrow and see what he has to say about it," he told reporters.

"We'll make an announcement tomorrow, probably around lunch time.

"Obviously it's a pretty serious injury, we'll take it as it comes ... it depends on my decision tomorrow."

Bokor denied Marshall's age - 21 - or the fact he was unable to do strength work in the off-season as reasons behind the latest injury.

"Dislocated shoulders are a case of being in the wrong place in the wrong time, with the arm being in the wrong position," he said.

"It's not necessarily because he is underdeveloped (physically) or anything like that."
