I would pick 17 based on passion as well as skill. If we currently had a squad of passionate players willing to die for the sharks we would'nt be were we are now. Maybe some of Frenzy's squad had that passion but lacked the skill.
I cant falter them for that.

It's actually neither. The player I wrongly named is Shane Topper, the eldest, who played first grade in 1978.

I'll amend.

Steve or Stuart Topper? I think its Stuart. When the ET Stand opened...whenever that was...all the players ran out onto the field and kicked balls into the crowd with a shjt sticker of the stand on it and their signatures....ET ran out....turned to the South Western hill and let loose in his "special" kicking style......the ball sailed towards me and seemed to just hang there begging me to catching it. Using my superior height I swatted away a number of 10 year olds and took the ball and held it aloft as if I had just captured our first premiership!...children cried, men swore and women hissed at my achievment....it was then I looked down at my prize to savour it in all its glory - the mark of an immortal on it.....when i noticed that Andrew had picked up Stuart Topper's ball.....I told no one until this day.

Both played first grade at the Sharks. Stuart, the dwarf, was the youngest Topper. Shane the oldest. Shane snared game time in 1978 but I don't know if it was 1,2 or 3 games. Wasn't many I know that. Was too many at the same time.

Middle brother Steve played 6 games in firsts for Souths.

They were a famous, maybe "infamous" footy family around the 70s and 80' with father Eric a power broker with both The Black Cats and Miranda Magpies.

From memory

Actually, it was both and two more Toppers to boot. Stuart is the youngest of four brothers- all I think have donned the shark's first grade jersey at some time. All mostly played in the halves. In age order, Shane, Steve, Scott and Stuart. Some junior footy in Liverpool but essentially played all their footy in the shark's juniors and lived local. Scott and Steve were both excellent surfers, winning numerous boardriding and beachflags titles for Wanda surf club and the Wanda nippers.

Wow, I never thought that piece of trivia would come up (lol)

actually thought stuart topper (the only one of the bros i saw play) was a handy little half back...playing well above his size (which wouldnt be hard...he was tiny but solid)

Coach. Norm Provan

This is my 2 cents worth. Fire away. I picked Provan as coach over Raper, Gibson and the rest of them because under his reign, he's the only one who ever actually won anything (Amco cup 1975). Foot note. If you want the bloody cup back, then beat us in a competition for it. Other wise, it stays put.

I picked Bishop as an impact player, not becaue he showed any real evidence of being good at it, just because 30 minutes of Tommy and Cliff Watson bashing Manly again would be worth admission.

Gavin Miller would be a great skipper because he donated his face to the game, how much more sincere can a player get ?

Would have to agree with that. Played well above his weight division. Had a bit of "youngest brother syndrome" driving him on as well

UNBEATABLE!

Quite a formable side there Cap'n Frenzy.. I personally would pay big money to watch that side wear the new away strip in 2006.

just a few points. Hope you dont mind.

Definately have Vincey Farrar as Captain, simple because he could see things happening around the field that other players couldn't, and all at the same time.

5/8 I dispute, that is Jack Danzey. Jack could land an up and under on a zack. As long as that zack was on the bitumen on the northern side of the road north of sutho oval.

You didn't have a spot for Mr perpetual slow motion Jeff Greysham. That Pom was always fleet of foot.

Freddie Pagano would have to at least made the bench.

Steve Edmondson, only because of his alleged antics in Hawaii.

Was it a Brian Cox.. fullback, he should be included for his goal kicking alone. Was always a 50 50 bet if it was right in front. Missed on on the bell against the Berries if me memory serves me correct. I think we lost 16 - 15.
Now I could be wrong here (Taylforth was still a Berry)

Our famous cigar smokin hooker --- is the Bomber good enough to make this outfit.

There's a few more rattling around inside my cranium. Just as soon as the liver does its job I will probably remember a few more certainties...... honestly we were like the Aussie cricket team, loose a champion, replace him with a champion.

I tell you what though Cap'n Frenzy, with that team you wouldn't have imposters. Vince would be leading from the front, left and right.

Cheers

I guess if he is injured we will have to live with it, but other than that I don't know how you can leave out a winger who ran back towards his own line with the ball so often. One time I think he almost picked up 20m in the wrong direction with a single run.

Yeah I remember his game stats....

HIT DOWNS - 4
Metres lost - 59

RIGHT!

It's on!

Name your whole side Quigley!

My side will tear yours apart! Vince has vision, you know that, but how will you combat his 360 insight?

You can't have Bomber Hynes. He could actually play! Ex Rabbit old bomber I believe. So what's it to be Quigmeister? 4 tackle rule? Unlimited? 13 import rule?

NAME YOUR CONDITIONS!

I'm thinking of bringing in Abercrombie.............look out!

NO NO not the Gordon, Not the Gordon........

I'm not playing if I can't have Vince. He is by far and wide the benchmark.

Gordon hey, I'll trade a Paul Lennon.... pidgeon toes and all.

Quigs, having had Vince around for a bit I am open negotiation.

You have to remember though that 1 Vince Farrar = 2, maybe 3 mere mortals.

I therefore put it to you that if you are prepared to release any of these we may be able to talk turkey.

I already know you have Edmonson and Pagano, 2 fine exponents of, hmm.......well, 2 fine exponents of something I'm sure.

However, my scout tells me you may be hiding the Bryant brothers. Jimmy and Harry.

Give me them and Kevin Gibson and you can have Vince. Jimmy was always a fave of mine. Fine poker player too.

I think my plan is being revealed here though.

Eric Topper was a fierce competitor and a very good coach and and all up decent fellow. He was a tricky as hell and taught me a few things but, he never hurt the kids or lost sight of the point that it was just sport.

Eric raised four sons that were all fairly decent athletes. Not bad !
