I heard about a poll a few weeks ago with the number one Guitar riff of modern music.

You might be thinking " Van Halen for sure!". I was.

It wasn't. The number one went to Guns N Roses with Sweet Child of Mine. A great song and a great riff, but I still have my doubts over why they were Number one...

Agree, that is a classic riff!!..it would probably get my vote.

I still think " Message in a bottle", " i'll be watching you" & " walking on the moon" are 3 of the best riffs i've heard,

Indeed, the solo just suits the song perfectly. I love it!
speaking of brilliant guitar solos...Nile - Stones of Sorrow. It's mesmerising, almost trance-like...brutal but with melodic sensibilities, oh so catchy and very memorable. Immolation - 'nailed to gold' is also damn brilliant.
Nile have a few great solos. How about the Solos in "Unas, Slayer of the Gods"? That whole section of that song is incredible, the way the rhythym guitar and drum track work with the lead puts a shiver up my spine. Chapter for Transforming Into A Snake is another insane peice as well.
An old school thrash favourite is the solos from Sabbatt's "The Clerical Conspiracy"

I love the solo to Dreams, Beat it, Homebound Train, Wanted Dead or Alive, Dry County, Best of Both Worlds, Wasted Years, Can I play with madness, Fear of the dark and the list goes on and on.

I'm easy to please.

Bonded By Blood By Exodus- Love the song, love the albulm, and I looove that solo! "Taste the sweet blood of one another, sharing without any greed. Bang your head as if up from the dead, intense metal is all that you need!"

Exodus had some mad guitar work. My personal fave is "Parasite" off "Pleasures of the Flesh", with the cool harmonised bit in the solo.

A million more
Coming after me
They thrive on insecticide
They live on DDT
No poison can defeat
The never ending swarm
They'll eat you from insdie out
You'll wish you were never born

run-but you can't hide
Blood-sucked from inside
My mind-doesn't know wrong from right
Parasite!

You guy's wouldn't know what a guitar solo is   ;-)

Eruption by Van Halen is recongnised at the best solo of all time.....and the solo that influenced all rock bands from the late 70's to the early 90's.....from Gunners to Metallica...from Satriani to Malmstein they all had Eddie's style....and Eruption was the solo that started it all.
You tell 'em Ron....Eddie wins by a country mile! :D
