You are joking right Hillbilly?

I guess we are voting for our favourites rather than the best then?

exactly right Hevy, people are biased, the easy winner would be Satriani, no direspect to the others, but they couldn't hold a candle to this bloke in talent.

and some people are mistaking talent for greatness. Undoubtedly Satriani has the talent to make his guitar go squiddly diddly better and faster than most. Doesn't neccesarily make it a better or more creative riff than say Peter Green's "Albatross" or Don Felder/Joe Walsh's "Hotel California".

I guess Hevy's right really, and it is about what connects with us individually, and it is a matter of opinion. In your opinion you think Saatch is the greatest out of this group (i think he's special as well) who am i to say what connects with you is wrong. Just the same for Hillbilly. If Seltzer's playing rocks his world the most, who's to tell him otherwise.

Satch has the most skill undoubtedly.... talent on the other hand is a lot harder to define.

So f**king what? The guy probably wouldn't even be playing guitar if it wasn't for people like Rhoads, Iommi and May.

What it all comes down to is: you will vote for whichever guitarist you like to listen to most. If you did it by skill alone, only 5 blokes would have a chance. Likewise if you did it by influence, songwriting, performing etc. Polls are popularity contests, end of.

You need talent to play like Satch, if you dont have talent then even attempting his pieces would be embarrasing.

ot rocket science to create a song with a few chords a solo resembling something from Nirvana, on the otherhand creating something like 'always with me always with you' and 'surfing with the alien' are complex masterpieces who only very few in the world could do.

lol

So you dont think Satch brought the guitar to a new level? whilst the 3 mentioned are great guitarists and were very influential, Satch is just simply a better guitarist.

I'm for influence being a major factor in defing a great guitarist, but if we went strickly by that rationale then Dee Dee Ramone and Kurt Cobain would be amongst that top 5 you speak off lol, and we all know how rubbish they were!

my vote is strictly on talent, Satch is the clear winner in that regard and his talent is well-documented.

What do you classify as a skillful guitarist by the way?

Many guitarist though dude;-) guitarist are very picky you'll find and many make their own instruments and then a manufactuer comes along and develops that guitar with the guitarist name attached attached to it.
I doubt that any of them made theirs out of a mantlepiece and parts from bikes. No one else tinkered with May's guitar, he made the whole thing himself. After about 4-5 albums, he started using the guitar that is seen in the picture above. There is only one copy of his guitar, and he has it in his house.

that is all well and good Ron...
at the end of the day they might be complex songs but for example:Sweet Child o mines opening Riff sounds better.
What is the whole point to music?
Is it to be the best at playing the most intricate piece of music or the best at making the best sound?

Satch's stuff is faultless but boring.
Cold Chisel do more for me.

ah no...no i am not, Brian Setzer has all the technique in the world, has bucket loads of feeling when he is playing, has feather light touch when needed, and smash you in the face attack when needed

he is not just a rockabilly...over the years he has played Jazz, Rock n Roll, Punk, Country and Metal style songs he took 1950s Rockabilly and took it to the next level by taking the essence of the music and modernising it

in the late seventies with Stray Cats he virtually Kick Started the Neo Rockabilly genre that is still huge in Europe, and in the late eighties he formed his Big Band, and again kick started the big band/jump/swing craze that was huge worldwide, and is still big within the roots music field

if the criteria for the best guitarist is influence, taking a form of music to the next level, technique, and playing with heart and passion......well then Brian Setzer should win this comp.......but as i have said before he wont, because, his Music is based in an obscure Music form

What the f**k are you talking about? How would Ramone and Cobain be in my top 5. I said I will vote for the ones that I like to listen to, I don't know where you came up with this other rubbish.
