Name selection is a complex process just to pass the pub test. The Kumuls in particular, the Orchids and the Hunters are at least relevant.

What many might not know is that when the SP Inter-City Cup, now the Digicel version, was first put together in 1989 for the 1990 season the original six franchises were the: Lae Bombers (connection to WW2), Rabaul Guria (Tok Pisin for earthquakes), Goroka Lahanis (local dialect for the Bird of Paradise), Mt. Hagen Eagles (connection to local iconic bird), Kundiawa Warriors (self-explanatory for those who know the reputation of Chimbu people) and Port Moresby.

The naming controversy was that the most dangerous creature in PNG is the Papuan Black Snake (Port Moresby is in Papua) which is a type of adder. So, because neither the Port Moresby Black Snakes (other connotations) nor the Port Moresby Adders (sounds like an accounting society) were deemed suitable, the Port Moresby Vipers were born.

In homage to the National Capital District's colours of gold and black plus their first major sponsor was Benson & Hedges (Coca-Cola was the 1996 version) then they wore predominantly gold and black with red trim.

To add to the debate, some of the other better local names have been taken by other sports eg the XV a side game uses Pukpuks (crocodiles) and the XV girls use Palais (which was in fact the anti-super league PNG League team that Adrian Lam captained in 1997) as well as cricket (Barramundis) and AFL (Mosquitos).

My choice? Anything not in English, let them decide.

Tigers is easily one of the more marketable names in the NRL.

I suspect this is all rubbish anyway. I believe the NRL would also hold the rights to the branding and name not the club itself (this happened during Super League if people remember).

Only fools would think that removing the Tigers moniker would be a good thing.
