Turf wars[edit]

The new boundaries set out in the early 1950s.
When the Sydney Roosters or Eastern Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club (ESDRLFC) first entered the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition in 1908, the tricolours would become neighbours to fellow city counterpart, the South Sydney Rabbitohs, then the South Sydney District Rugby League Football Club (SSDRLFC). The original articles of association binding both the ESDRLFC and SSDRLFC with the NSWRL defined the territories of both clubs. Easts were formed to represent the local government areas of the City of Sydney, Darlinghurst, Paddington, Vaucluse, Woollahra, Waverley and Randwick. Meanwhile, Souths were to represent the local government areas of Redfern, Alexandria, Zetland, Waterloo, Mascot and Botany. Notwithstanding the local junior boundary changes referred to in this article, these articles of association have not changed, and as such the Roosters at senior level technically represent all of the local government areas as assigned in 1908, subsequent council mergers aside.

As such, Anzac Parade separated the territories for both inner-Sydney clubs when the boundaries were first established the previous year. Souths' boundaries were based on the municipalities of Redfern, Botany, Alexandria, Mascot and Waterloo, while the Roosters' boundaries were those of the eastern municipalities of Paddington, Woollahra, Vaucluse, Randwick and Waverley. Many of these councils had then amalgamated, as demographic changes affected the inner and eastern suburbs of Sydney. Randwick Council has a western and southern boundary of Anzac Parade and incorporates all those eastern suburbs east of Anzac Parade, and these suburbs like Waverly, Bondi, and Woollahra were all part of the Roosters' territory since 1908.[1]

The new residential league boundaries set out in 1937 would take junior league territory away from the Roosters, and hand it over to rival neighbouring club South Sydney after Easts had won 3 premierships in a row.[citation needed]. There was request in 1955 to return this area but it was not approved by the NSWRFL.

In the mid-20th century, the southern half of Roosters junior territory within the Randwick local government area was handed to South Sydney. The NSWRL made this change to 'even the competition' as South Sydney's original heartland, around Redfern and Waterloo, had rapidly industrialised and de-populated. Rabbitohs stalwart S.G. Ball was a dual administrator within South Sydney Rabbitohs and the New South Wales Rugby League at the time. The Rabbitohs were in a highly successful period and had established South Sydney Juniors Rugby League Club in Kingsford, Roosters territory in recent times.[citation needed]

Debate still continues amongst rival fans as to how and why Eastern Suburbs junior territory, comprising suburbs with junior league clubs rich in talent and numbers in the Randwick and Coogee areas, was given to South Sydney. The Roosters expressed disappointment at losing some of its junior clubs, but the NSWRL would not waver.[2]

This was not to be the end of struggle for junior territory between the two inner-city clubs. In the 1980s some junior clubs such as Paddington Colts that were within Roosters territory became dissatisfied with Roosters management and affiliated with South Sydney.[citation needed]

After the Newtown Jets were expelled from the NSWRL in 1983, most of their junior district was eventually absorbed into the South Sydney junior district in 1987, with some pockets absorbed by the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.

With the tide having turned compared to the situation decades earlier, and the Roosters having a much smaller junior League than South Sydney, Eastern Suburbs at this time then made unsuccessful attempts to regain the suburbs on the same grounds used to hand the southern parts of Coogee and Randwick from Easts to Souths, that of providing an 'even competition'. The NSWRL, controlled at the time by a Board with a ruling faction of representatives from South Sydney (Terry Parker), Balmain (Keith Barnes), Canterbury (Peter Moore) and Manly (Ken Arthurson), refused to redraw the boundaries.[citation needed]

NSWRL should do a review every 10-20 years on the boundary or else every Joe and his teams will continue to sook about Roosters cherry picking talents from other clubs.

I have despised Sydney City Roosters ever since Phil Gould, Sing and Fittler joined them in the mid 90’s. Beating them for the 2003 premiership when everyone just assumed they would roll us, (even though we were the minor premiers) was a very joyous occasion!

However that’s a long time ago now and these days, it’s just not fun watching NRL when the Rorters buy whoever they want and win all these comps. There’s no feel good factor about them though because they are just an efficiently run business who navigate the cap with their Third Party Agreements.

The Rorters are reflective of modern sport in that way. Occasionally there will be a feel good champion but that’s rarely the case. More often than not it is clubs like the Rorters who don’t capture the public imagination and lack ‘soul’.

Just so you know; your immense, irreconcilable, irrational butthurt towards the Roosters gives us fans immense pleasure.

When we win comps, go back to back - and when we do the 3peat this year - our first reaction is purely elation. But after the first wave of surreal joy begins to subside, we experience a second wave of joy when we see the GF thread and the reactions of all the tormented souls who have night terrors over our success.

No tear goes to waste.

This attitude just shows that ‘Humility’ isn’t in the Rorters dictionary. Did you have any humility in 2009? What about 2016? Some day you will be forced to be humble again.

You were having a dig at our club, why would you expect tommy to be humble in response?

You whinge about our club being a business. That is something to be proud of because professional sports is a business.

Our club is something other clubs should strive to be and a fair few people on here have had the guts to admit it.

As you say it hasnt always been that way, the club was an abject failure from 2005 until 2012 at which point the club had a gutful of being also rans and changed their approach.

Ah you may want to clarify that comment as 2013, 2018 and 2019 say "hi", especially as Fitzgibbon was an Assistant Coach for all three of those.
Interesting - I’m seeing you claiming that roosters are bucking the ‘bald people won’t win GFs’ trend, but I don’t think Fitzgibbon alone proves it.
Further research required. I proposed that you take McGregor on as head coach to really see if Roosters can change the fates.

Well take Robinson.

2013 was an epic meltdown by opposition fans. Before the season they said we had a mediocre roster, but once we started winning they said it was obvious that we were over the Cap? If it was so obvious then why were they saying our roster was crap?
Having a crap roster doesn’t mean you aren’t over the cap. Just ask Parra fans.

Lol exactly.

Pantherz takes every known pot shot at the Roosters - using every cliche in the book - and so I give the troll response, to which he responds, "but but where's your humility?"

Roosters fans will display humility in victory when the conquered show some grace in defeat.

Again, a troll. But if you're gonna dish it out then please be able to take it in return.

The best advice I can give to Pantherz and all the sooky opposition fans who whinge about the Roosters being soulless are these pearls of wisdom from one of my favourite movies - Showpiercer...

Well you call me a troll but I posted in this thread to share what I genuinely believe. Roosters fans in my experience are bad winners. Especially after last years GF.

Dude, have a read of the GF thread and look at the vitriol.

The embers of an RLM (Raiders Lives Matter) uprising were ablaze. Ben Cummins was Derek Chauvin.

We were called Clayton's Premiers, etc. And the media devalued our achievement by focusing on the "6 again" call.

And you know what? That's fine. Tall Poppy Syndrome is as Australian as vegemite. We get it.

Just don't expect us to be humble and gracious in return.

I also have a long memory (hell, this story will make you happy). And I recall very clearly how much shit I copped leaving ANZ Stadium after the 2003 GF.

I was 17, surrounded by heathen Penrith fans taking the piss and foaming at the mouth as they laughed and waved me out of the stadium and on the trains. I just assumed they had Rabies so wasn't bothered tbh.

Ftr I have never returned the favour. I hate fans who do that shit and have never gloated at any of the GFs I've witnessed live - not even towards Manly fans who are the second coming of the Devil.

The moral of the story is that all clubs have fans that lack grace in victory. Penrith, Roosters, whoever, it's all the same.

Don't worry about pantherz, perpetually butthurt and always starts his pity party posts with talking about himself and how sad he feels lol
