They all pale into insignificance compared to the Super 14 player that actually murdered someone in South Africa...

That was Danny the Dolphin and he deserved much worse than being set on fire.

This post has it spot on. The main thing to understand is that there have always been stupid people in the game. In some respects alcohol and women were almost part of it in the old days. The point is they were the 'old days'. Society has changes as have peoples expectations of professional sports people. There's not too many kicks in the guts rugby league can take. And anyone who says all professional sportsmen are the same are kidding themselves. Tiger Woods aside look at golf or even tennis. Its not the sport itself its the culture bred within that sport. if you don;t chnage that we'll be talking about this all year every year.

Posted this in the main Monaghan thread but it got lost with everyone posting so quickly...

It's about time the clubs, the fans, and the players started listening to other people. I was discussing a few things with several PR people and media professionals not long ago and they say that the clubs (all sports) don't listen. These people explain to the clubs, the fans and players that with the rise of new media i.e. the combining of traditional forms of media with new technology, things like this are going to be instant news and in the case of Twitter and the like are going to be spread worldwide.

Society knows the effects of alcohol, society is against poor behaviour and society regards these people as celebrities and role models. Celebrities and role models come with certain standards of behaviour they need to follow. Humans have certain standards of behaviour to follow.

It's all too easy now to record your mate and have it on youTube within 15 minutes. It's all too easy to send a picture to 50 people in 15 seconds. They get on the piss, they go out in public and someone recognises them. It's instant recognition now too with the rise of the internet. There is a reason this is being called the Information Age. And there is a reason this is called the Age of Communication. What do people expect?

Gotta love the wowsters. After every single incident, people ask us to think of the children, & that the game is going to suffer for this.

And magically, the crowd numbers increase every year.......

*sigh* Some people are well & truly the media's bitch.

And people act like this only happens at the professional level and only with rugby league players.

If people saw some of the stuff that the clubs i've played for get up to i swear they would have a seizure.

I agree with you though. People are up in arms now but by the time next years season rolls around everyone will have forgotten about it.
