The Warriors and Broncos aren’t the only club currently in player trade talks with grand finalists the Penrith Panthers and St George Illawarra negotiating a swap between rookie NRL forwards Billy Burns and Eddie Blacker.

Burns is a backrower who is currently sitting behind Viliame Kikau, Kurt Capewell and Liam Martin at Penrith while Blacker is a rookie front-rower who has been pressing for NRL selection this season.

Both clubs are expected to announce the swap in the next 24 hours.

Thanks Smarty
I don’t mind him, seems like a good hard runner.

I like how he's a different body style to the rest of our pack, Has a real second rowers body, tall and rangy, why I thought Ford would be good as well.

Tariq and Kerr are currently our starters but they could easily play middle as well. I actually thought Tariq might be given a go at 13 this year, he won't now after the Knights game,

Will be keen to see how Hook uses him, don't think he just walks straight into the team, at this point no one deserves to get dropped. If it someone has to go from the bench, Merrin or Farmer would be the most likely. Alvaro and Wiliame have been playing too well to make way to be honest.

Blacker is no where near 1st grade ready or has done anything yet to warrant a call up over who is there thus far. He wont make Penrith 1st grade side for some time either if he goes.

We lost Tamou and Tetevano and none of the 2021 signings are front rowers. Been targeting that position to bolster our stocks. He may soon be the 4th ranked front rower behind Fish, Leota and Leniu.

Thats all fine. Then you should of targeted someone more seasoned. He does not have the work ethic yet for 1st grade. I have watched him labour in reserves. He is young so I wont say he wont make it but I'd be surprised you have only 3 front rower options before you look at him. Even Dragons have 5

Didn't know Burns was so tall. Big frame to fill. Great trade. Blacker is a long while off first grade.

Hopefully burns is there to light a fire under Ford. The competition is healthy lads.

IMO Billy Burns would be in the starting sides for some of the competitions lesser sides although he may have to wait for his opportunity with you guys given your forward pack has been performing quite well. He is definitely NRL standard, with a lot of potential. I hope he returns when his loan deal is up, if that what this swap arrangement involves.

I hope Billy Burns is being recruited to be our right edge forward. Kerr is trying hard but I'm certain that he is a better in the middle than out on an edge. Ford has not risen to task as yet. Fui is doing great at lock but can he maintain this form long term?

If De Belin becomes available we will have enough depth in forwards to make the top 4 in 2021. All those doubters will only have to look back at the demolition job the Dragons did on Parramatta in Round 5.

I would love to see Fifita and McGuire be available for the ANZAC Day game against the Roosters.

2021 Squad
In; Bird, McCullough, Fifita, Alvaro, Faamausili, Elis, Burns
Out; Aitken, Lafai, K Sims, Host, Blacker, Saab, Frizell, Graham

Likely forwards depth for season 2021:
Props; Vaughan, Lawrie, Fifita (bench), Kerr (bench), Alvaro, Faamausili, Ellis
Hookers; McCullough, Wishart (bench utility)
Backrow; Sims, McGuire, Burns, Ford, Merrin,
Lock; De Belin, Fuimaono (bench)

2022 Squad
In: Molo. Schiller
Out: Norman, McInnes, Pereira, Ellis, Merrin, (maybe Dufty)

Likely forwards depth for season 2022:

Props; Vaughan, Lawrie, Fifita (bench), Kerr (bench), Molo, Alvaro, Faamausili
Hookers; McCullough, Wishart (bench utility)
Backrow; Sims, McGuire Fuimaono, Burns, Ford,
Lock; De Belin, Fuimaono (bench)

Griffin will have half a season and a full off-season to prepare a quality forward pack for at tilt at the premiership. He will have the opportunity to rotate his forwards and select on form without fear of losing quality. Competition amongst the forwards for a first grade spot will be fierce.

In the backs, I believe that fullback will be the most contested position with Dufty, Ramsey, Sloan and Schiller all having a desire to play fullback. Dufty must step up each game to hold his position. Ramsey needs more time in first grade to be considered and the other two contenders, Sloan and Schiller, will need to stake their claim from reserve grade.

Our backline now has good depth that is stacked with talented young players. I am expecting big things from the Feagai brothrs, Sloan, Sullivan, Amone and Schiller. I would never had thought that Saints could transform in to such a promising squad so quickly.

When you take a close look at recruitment under Griffin, there is a stark difference in quality and value for money when compared to the Mary/Millward era.

Yes,
.... seems a rather uneven swap,
as Billy’s credentials of Aust schoolboy rep, u20’s SOO squad & Panthers’ CC player of the year look impressive

....& he apparently has silky hands & a good left foot, which bodes well for hole runners like Duff & Bud

He was part of a bevy of 9 Panthers juniors blooded in 2019.
Now there’s a nursery

You do wonder how Cleary & Griff would rate players.

Certainly Griff would’ve seen young Billy’s standout performance in the Panthers 2016 SG Ball GF win

.... and would’ve watched his progress through to Fittler’s u18 SOO train-on squad & beyond

Perhaps Ivan just needs a big bopper depth prop over 18st

....& we need 2nd row & forward depth to cover for the odd suspension coming our way with the impending recruitment of some talented but take-no-prisoners mongrel!

Anyway, as I spent a good deal of my childhood roaming Dad’s country around Parkes
.... & watching the tough local Spacemen,
this kid just has to be a good Griff pickup eh

PS
Ford was very busy & looked keen as in his cameo against the battered Ones on Sundy
