That sort of comment from Billy Slater shows a very low level of intelligence. It's a pre-school insult.

Good on slater for having a dig at him as so many use depression as an excuse, and for people wanting to kill themselves over something going wrong then thats just plain selfish and all you will do is hurt your family.

Ii cant feel sorry foe people using depression as an escape route, and this is from a person that really doesnt have luck on his side.

Haha, dumb f**k

To be fair to you though, a healthy person will never truly be able to understand a sick person's mind - especially in this instance. You can think they're selfish all you want, but if they are suffering from depression as a mental illness its just being ignorant on your part really.

A healthy person will think it's crazy and selfish that they would ever do that, and from that particular point of view, it is probably a fair assessment. However, you wouldn't have the slightest idea what it is like from their point of view.

What would you charge him with? Grade 1 hurt feelings?

Hilarious.

In my defence, I didn't know exactly what Slater had said. If he'd vigorously attacked him about his depression, then yeah I'd expect some sort of retribution to be handed out. Depression is a disease - those who flippantly cast it off and say 'toughen up' are a disgrace. Would you expect punishment for someone who sledged someone about having cancer? It's not quite the same, but they're both potentially life-threatening.

Slater knew what he was saying, and referring to, when he said it. 'Go cry in your room' may not sound tough but he was poking at a serious condition. I've never thought Slater had an ounce of class and this proves it.

tbh I think sledging someone about having depression is hilarious, and this is coming from someone who is pretty sure he has a massive case of what the quacks would call "depression" himself.

All you armchair mental health experts are geniused if you think taunting a depressed person about being depressed is going to worry them. Depressed people have bigger things to worry about, like the general meaninglessness of human existence and stuff.

I'm no expert, nor am I sitting in an armchair, but I'm gonna go ahead and guess that being taunted about your depression probably isn't water off a duck's back....

Did Paterson fire up that much because of Slater's breath? No, I'd suggest it was the message. So sorry, I'd suggest you're wrong.

Personally I believe I am an expert. And the comments from people comparing depression to non-mental illnesses are a poor analogy imo.

Another point: I think a depressed person would be more susceptible to insults and sledging in general. Indeed, if he invests a lot of his self worth in his football, he'd probably be more deeply hurt by being called a sh*t footballer than "haha, you have depression".

So....do we ban sledging on players with mental illness?

If a player says he has an anxiety disorder, do we let him play but say you can't rush out of the line to tackle him because you'll put him under pressure?

so Stone says what happes on the field stays on the field, f**king double standards when it goes to Gallen, (and I am not saying what he said wasn't wrong either) but Gallen says something on the field, player accepts his apology and he even says what is said on the field stays on the field, but being Gallen it isnt left on the field and is punished by the NRL
Slater is a merkin always has been always will be, melbourne are protected always have been always will be.
Depression is a silent killer, nothing to be mocked, I dont want to say it cause I dont want to put the mocker on him, but what if this newcaste player now decended into a major episode and did kill himself. f**king grub Slater wouldn't care less

Anxiety disorder doesn't really work like that...

persoanlly i think if you are going to sledge then the player sledged should be within his rights to put one on you. That would soon sort it out. Might need to hold Billy so Cory could catch him first though!

Having played sport and been sledged I always found it highly amusing rather than insulting and I've had some pretty nasty things said to me. I would often just laugh at them which would wind them up more then at an opportune time meat out some retribution., strangely the sledging never lasted all game!

Slater's a dog, it's obvious - what annoys me is the smiley face nice young fella image that the media play up... while he's a wonderful talent, I find very little to like in him

I am not sure what to make of the sledge, and to be fair we don't know what was said, how personal it was, or the context (i.e., Paterson's role)

Paterson should have clocked him good if he was that upset... or just get on with the game...

The thing to remember that whilst these guys are highly-paid sportsmen in the public eye, they started out as bogans. And all the money in the world doesn't change that - they're still bogans.
