Well before my time so I don’t have any idea of how he played. I was having a beer at Caringbah pub with one of my uncles (Wests fan) who waxed about him and told me how great he was. I ended up having a quick chat to him about the upcoming round. He didn’t seem too enthused about the modern game but did spark up a bit about Mark Gasnier at the time.

He must’ve been at least 6 schoo’s deep though. I remember that!
Do your self a favour SSS and jump onto youtube and watch the 1971 Grand Final and see what you think; i personally wouldn’t go close to consider swapping any half currently running around with Billy Smith.

We seemingly had an endless stream of top quality halves in the 50s/60s/70s but Billy was easily the best. I watched him play many times at the SCG and Jubilee and remember being spellbound in his presence while he and my Grandfather were talking outside the Taj one evening.
We could do with someone with his spirit now - as long as he was over 30 and was from Brisbane he'd slot right in...

Billy was a great player. He should be remembered with the same regard that Tommy R was given. He was a better half than Tommy in my opinion and just as tough.

One of my 2 best / favourite Saints players I’ve seen.

True Blues Billy Smith, Brett Kenny and Glenn Lazarus have been unveiled as the latest inductees into the NSWRL The Star Hall of Fame during the annual True Blues dinner on Monday 31 May.

In a glittering ceremony in front of 470 guests at The Star Event Centre in Pyrmont, Lazarus, Kenny and Smith were inducted on a night which also saw the official presentation of the Brydens Lawyers NSW Blues for Game One of the Ampol State of Origin series and tributes for late Hall of Famers Bob Fulton and Tommy Raudonikis.

“The annual True Blues dinner is always a highlight on the NSWRL calendar and it was a privilege to welcome Billy Smith, Brett Kenny and Glenn Lazarus as the latest inductees into the Hall of Fame,” NSWRL Chairman Dr George Peponis said.

“Each player was a champion in their own right and wore the sky blue jumper with distinction every time they took the field to play for their state.

“It was fitting that we also acknowledged the tremendous contributions that Bob Fulton and Tommy Raudonikis made to Rugby League and their loss is still being felt today.

“The Origin tradition will always endure and I’m confident the team that we have announced for this year’s series will give a good account of themselves against Queensland.”

Smith started his career as a centre before switching to halfback and his competitive spirit saw him win four consecutive premierships at the Dragons from 1963-66.

Smith played for NSW in interstate matches from 1964-73, including captaining the team in 1967, and never tasted defeat in a series.

Kenny was a gifted player and a big-match performer who played a key role in Parramatta capturing four premierships in the NSWRL competition in the 1980s.

In the 12 State of Origin games where he was selected as five-eighth, Kenny enjoyed an eight games to four winning advantage over Wally Lewis.

The NSWRL The Star Hall of Fame inductees includes the seven Immortals who have represented NSW and 14 other players who represented their state with distinction.

The qualification for the NSWRL The Star Hall of Fame is:

a) The player must have played 10 games or more for NSW; or, alternatively, the player must have captained NSW; AND

b) The player must have also played for Australia: AND

c) The player must also have been retired for at least five seasons.

One of the Dragons best ever players - half or center , he always gave his scheming best to the Red & Whites . Early part of his career he played in the back line , eventually moving to the halfback position to form a potent attack and defense partnership with Johnny Raper .

Together they were responsible for many tries and linked with Johnny King the winger . One of my favorite memories is when the Dragons would win the ball after a scrum , where Smith would get the ball , then a short pass to Raper whilst Smith would continue to run to the open side ( as if he still had the ball in his possession ) drawing the defense with him whilst Raper continued to the blind side and pass the ball to King who would score .

So pleased for him with this honor , one that he so richly deserves .

Yes Gareth, that combination of Smith and Raper.
Outstanding.
Like Coffs D says, include Langlands and suddenly we had a (football) spine before that word even entered the footy dictionary.

Those three, pure genius.
And congrats Billy on this recognition.
