with the amount of AFL junior clinics in the GC schools atm, and the fact we have a mayor who would give his right nut to see AFL superseed league on the coast it is more than enough reason to stear clear of Captain Bligh.

the QLD labor govt funded the Robina Stadium.....they're now funding the Cararra redevelopment. the only issue i can see here lie in the petty insecurities being harboured by rugby league supporters.

not petty at all. Very real concerns that AFL could take over as the No 1 sport in SE-Qld. The Lions have got some very big junior development plans pertaining to junior recruitment on the coast, a decent stadium is all they need.

Only the dunces at Big Footy (and AFL HQ) think that AFL is going to achieve anything on the Gold Coast. :sarcasm:

You should know better Beave, according to the ALP anything north of noosa or west of toowoomba doesn't exist.

On the funding front borg promised 18mil for a new high school at hervey bay, minister for airconditioning mcnamara scoffed and said it would cost 55mil.

So the borg can spend 55mil and still get change out of blighs 23,000 seat poofball stadium.

A desperate attempt by Bligh to hang on to those few marginal seats on the Gold Coast.

Lost my vote too.

Have yet to see a reason to vote for Anna, this is a waste of money, and as a QLD taxpayer, poor choice and bad government.

I will now vote LNP.

Not the only reason but the straw that broke the camels back.

She's clutching at straws, Qld needs a change of gov anyway.

the QLD govt is undertaking what any govt in the world would also do. promote its jurisdiction as a viable location for business to invest....in this case, its the AFL. once a team is in place, it will generate millions of $$$ a year for south-east QLD.....through club's employees, local projects, gamedays, etc it's simple economics. so simple, i'll give the LNP less than week to come up with a similar offer.....if they dont, the GC is labor's.

Basically.

Seriously get over it QLDers. If you're going to vote against someone because they're going to fund a stadium for an opponents sport then that's the greatest advert I've ever heard for intelligence testing prior to being allowed to vote. Education, transport and health care are reasons to vote for a state government.

This is a state government which, by the way, has:

-Rebuilt Lang Park.
-Built Robina from the ground up.
-Carried out upgrades and renovations to Dairy Farmers.

Anna Bligh is running a state, not running the QRL. There are, shockingly, people who follow AFL in QLD. That stadium will clearly be rebuilt at some point.

And really, who cares? The team is going in anyway. It's up to Rugby League to offer a superior product to AFL and encourage people to it's games rather than to the AFL.

The only people who should be rightly annoyed by this are those from the north of the state. I think I heard that 30% of the states revenue is generated from Mackay up, and something like 3% of it goes back into infrastructure for North Queensland. They should be upset that a new stadium is being built on the Gold Coast - but only because they need better roads, schools and hospitals, not because of a worry about an AFL takeover.

so the question here is what are the ARL doing to compete against this threat from the AFL?

as usual, the game's administrators sit on their hands or bury their heads in the sand and pretend the threat doesnt exist. as with all industries, there is internal competition.

the incumbent govt is seeking a larger slice of the sporting pie via the biggest sporting code in the country....it will generate $$$ for the state in the long-term. it's not about giving the AFL a leg-up over rugby league. the labor govt did its job for rugby league by helping fund the $160m robina stadium (and the $280m rebuild of lang park).....generating jobs in the works, and continuing its boost to the economy through the titans. this is an attempt at the same with the AFL.

so let me get this straight....you wont vote labor, simply because they'll build an AFL stadium......and ignoring the jobs this will generate in the town......this is your vote decider, the petty AFL vs rugby league slangoff

I wouldn't vote Labor in Qld because they have managed to f**k EVERYTHING up. If it wasn't for Bob Carr/Morris Iemma/Captain Whatshisname, then Qld would be the laughing stock of Australia.

I wish the NRL had this much influence and clout! I could only dream about Gallop rocking up in Perth and pressuring the WA govt into rebuilding MES for a NRL Reds team!

Frick we are so far behind it hurts.

Transport, education, healthcare = overrated. I would vote against a government solely for the reason that they support AFL.

Bligh and co. aren't even the laughing stock of QLD. Borg and the abortion that is the LNP are a complete shambles. It'd be a testament to the stupidity of QLD'ers if Borg became the Premier of our state.

"Influence and clout"? lol

When did the AFL first ask for this? A year or two ago wasn't it?

The only reason Bligh has finally done something is because there is an election coming up and Labor is behind in the polls.

A recommendation...if you have no idea about something you should just stfu.

Qld has one of the worst public infrastrucutres in the world.

Case in point:

Police - police numbers especially in the Logan and GC area are heavily underresourced. Equipment is outdated, many crews cannot get on the road because there are not enough cars.
The police academy is 50 years and is falling apart. The new academy which was promised a few years ago has now been called off because the Qld Gvment does not have enough money.

Public transport - Rail in SEQLD is abysmal...trains do not run from the hours of 1am-5am...there have been times where after going for a night out into town you have to wait around for hours before the next train comes. Hinterland GC has no regular rail services, ever expanding west brisbane has insufficient services.

Ambulance - ambulances are heavily under resourced

Hospitals - lets not even start, its a mess.

Roads - its taken 10 years for the Labour government to upgrade roads and its only cause their hand was forced, still not enough. As witnessed in the Pac Mwy crash of 06 on north GC the entire SEQLD road network will shutdown if a major accident happens on the over-relied Pac Mwy.

Dont piss in ppls pockets about how it will give people jobs, Qld government should be investing in public jobs to give people steady employment that benefits the community...not a stupid stadium that will give people temporary jobs and only benefits Victorians.

Well said Brycey. Throw in the fact that the Qld fire & Rescue service is so poorly funded that half the stations in the state are only at 3/4 strength and the guys who are working need to have 1 and some times 2 extra jobs just to make ends meet due to the 3rd world pay rate.

Labour needs a kick in the arse

some of you guys need to get the blinkers off

The main reason the AFL is slowly getting there with this is because they are offering a great deal....they are going to put up stacks of their own cash upfront, and even more money ongoing into the future, to support the new side.

And if the GC get a new AFL side, then the council and federal government will drop millions into the city too.

So for a bargain basement price of 60 million, the state government are getting 130 million worth of upgrades to public infrastructure, plus millions more every year pumped into the economy by the AFL. And then there is the boost to the local nightlife economy the actual games themselves generate.

Its a model for expansion, if the NRL announced a Perth side for say 4 years from now, and commited a decent amount of their own money, they could start lobbying the local, state and federal government for assistance. The could get together with the Force and Glory and work towards a quality shared solution for them all.

but that would take vision and strategy, Gallop is too busy trying to work out how to deal with a drunkard player!
