Fairly sure Moore Park, Kensington, Coogee-Randwick, Coogee Dolphins used to be in the Easts comp...decades ago.

Ok, clarification on this.
According to From Where The Sun Rises, a Roosters history book:

In 1908 Roosters boundaries extended all the way down to Long Bay, but there was little to no residential development in Maroubra. So when St George entered in 1921 and the Maroubra area was given to Souths by the NSWRL, no one cared too much.
Then in 1937, the boundaries were again redrawn. Previously Easts territory extended down to Rainbow St, it was redrawn to Alison Rd, so we lost the Kensington, Randwick, and Coogee areas.

So the issue isn't so much about clubs being stolen as area. Clubs that were later established in these areas would theoretically be Roosters juniors.

From what I can gather, Paddington Colts and Coogee Dolphins defected to Souths due to financial issues. There is no doubt that in the late 80s/early 90s Easts were guilty of poor junior management, with numbers down to 250 at some point (in 2008 they climbed back over 1000). However it is rightly noted that over the last 100 years Souths have acquired not only more than half of our territory ("to even up the competition") but Newtown's as well.

That said, it would be good to see continued resurgance in the Roosters juniors. More than 4 clubs would be good.

Thanks to both HH & Adam for those posts.
I find it's very interesting to read about the games history & traditions especially where Souths & Easts are concerned.
I will continue to look into this as i'm very keen to find out more.

It's bloody hard to find anything on the net about it, other the probably biased rants of supporters from either side.

Yeah i agree.
From what i have read there has always been strong competition between Souths & Easts going back to the day's when Souths players were mostly of the Roman Catholic faith & East's players were mainly of the Protestant faith.
I forget where i read that from but i do remember it was from an article somewhere on the early day's of the game.
There will always be a rivalry between the two clubs & let's hope it last's for a very long time because not only is it one of the games longest standing traditions but i could never agree with the two clubs merging to form one club.

I think you're right on most counts - I guess the point is they play out of areas that are in the Eastern Suburbs as opposed to South Sydney - hence the argument.

I'm quite sure that Kenso was originally an Easts junior club as they were in our old boundary lines. As an example, Ron Coote's old man played for Easts in the 1930's out under the residency rules at the time and the family lived at Kinsgford. When Ron himself came into grade, he was a Souths junior (playing out of Kenso), depite living in the same house the whole time. A sign of the effect the boundary changes of the 1950's had.

Personally, I played in the Easts juniors in the late 80's for the Paddo Tigers. Some of the teams we played against included the current lot (United, Cloey and St Charles) as well as Paddo Colts, Brothers (Marcellin), Wolloommoolloo, Rose Bay, St Marys and Double Bay.

Personally, I see some of these as areas where clubs could be re-born except for Colts unfortunately (what a great club they were).

I'd love nothing more than for the Easts juniors to stand alone, but in today's league climate, I'm not sure that is realistic and to be honest, it's probably not the best outcome.

The club has actually fone a good job from the Super League days when we only have about 200 registered players. Number is closer to 1,000 thsse days but I still think the club could do more. All about money though and until they're willing to spend more if it, I think the status quo will remain.

I'd love nothing more than to see Paddo Colts rise again to be an active club in any comp.
Is this where the Paddington Tigers formed from ?

No, they co-existed for a long time. Paddo was once a very tough working class area believe it or not.

In my day, most of the Colts players were actually from Bondi and alot of them were sons of guys that had played for Colts in the 60's and 70's.

Some of the players that Colts have produced are Bunny Reilly, Bryan Fletcher, Jim Dymock and Craig Field.

Dymocks' always been claimed as a Souths junior, but he actually played most of his junior footy with Easts clubs, starting witht he Wolloommoolloo Warriors and then Colts for a number of years, before moving onto the Alexandria Rovers in his late teens.

Yeah it's a shame that Paddo Colts dont exist anymore because as you stated Paddington once had a very strong working class presence with a local rugby league side to represent it.
I will have to agree with you on Jim Dymock as both him & his brothers were both bought up down the housing commision estate down Wooloomooloo.
HH, if you get a chance look up a book titled Sunshine & Shadow written by Larry Writer as it's astory (true) based on the lives of James & Steven Dack (& sister Alison) who were bought up around Wooloomooloo & played in the old Easts comp & Steve went on to play grade for the Roosters whilst James has remained loyal in his support to the club to this day.
I collect old Rugby League jerseys & i would love to get my hands on one from Paddo Colts.

Yeah, I know James Dack from a long time ago - played alot of touch footy against him.

He's done alright for himself and is still involved in some initiatives around the 'loo. Great Rugby League area that was too.

There's certainly a bit going on behind the scenes, they held the first vote in a while last year to have a breakaway competition with the 3 easts clubs with a bit of interest from some of our 'stolen' :p clubs possibly coming back depending on terms.

All talk at the moment though...
Can you tell us more about this? Very interested. PM me if better.

Mate i thoroughly recommend it.
I really enjoyed reading about the challenges both brothers endured & i could relate to what they went through together.
It was also interesting to read about the ESJRL when they had an active comp & the Roosters Junior grades in general.

Adam, Coogee Dolphins played their first year (1994) in the Easts Juniors but then aligned themselves with Souths Juniors.
Moore Park i believe were established as a club in 1952 (from memory so dont quote me) & i have always known them to be a Souths Juniors club.
Coogee Randwick were formed in the early 50's i think & once again i have always known them to be a Souths Juniors club.
Will try & find some facts on Kensington but i am more interested in finding out some information from an impartial source.

Kensington United only fielded an A-reserve team this year and have been struggling for a few years now. I'm involved with a relatively young club in the form of the Kensington Saints who have taken over the ground duties and canteen at Kensington oval. We used to field about 13 teams a few years ago but now have only 4 or 5....the kids have disappeared.
The junior clubs 13yrs and above now compete in a combined comp with St George and Balmain teams.

Kenso was once a very strong club in A grade so that's sad.
I remember seeing them play Chelsea in the 1986 GF at Redfern.
Although that was 25 years ago it's still sad to see the clubs demise since then.

Just a note.
All the U13s to U17s are playing in a Combined comp as someone mentioned. Along with Souths, Canterbury, Balmain and St George.

Clovelly are actually fielding an AR team in the Souths comp too, coached by John Dowell.

Just wondering when and why this club was founded and why they just aren't part of Kenso United?

Even thouhg I'm an Easts man, I find it sad that Kenso is on the verge of folding. They were always a great club and have produced some good players.

I've been involved with the club since 2003 and I think it formed in 2000. Basically there were a few families in the Kenso area who had kids that wanted to play League and didn't want to go to Mascot or away from the area. Kenso United at the time did not want to take on the responsibility of fielding teams that were under 16 years old, so two brothers got together and approached Souths juniors for a license to form a club. We almost merged with Kensington United last year but hard heads and egos on both sides didn't let this happen. We've worked hard to build this club from scratch and have won 5 competitions since entering.

Originally the club was affiliated with the St Spyridon Greek church in Kingsford (Hence the Saints name) but this didn't quite work so is now standalone. .

We changed our name from Saints to Kensington Saints this year tobe more indentifiable with the area. We wear Red and White Hoops. The two founders are Souffs supporters but most of the kids support the Roosters!. I wish we were affiliated with the Roosters but I don't think they want to spend the money.
As much as I don't like the Souths influence, the Souths Juniors have been very generous to us and in the end it's all about the kids playing footy.
