Wait, so which Kensington side is in the AR's comp?

We put nearly 60 on them a few weeks ago...

Kensington United....the original. We only go up to U/12s this year.

So.....did you score a try?.....what are the Navy Tridents like?...I watch them train at Garden Island sometimes

Navy had a decent game against us and came close, but are sitting close to the bottom of the table for some reason

Our junior rep teams gave the Dragons boys a good belting two weeks back... in 2 of the 3 games anyway.

I've been involved with the club since 2003 and I think it formed in 2000. Basically there were a few families in the Kenso area who had kids that wanted to play League and didn't want to go to Mascot or away from the area. Kenso United at the time did not want to take on the responsibility of fielding teams that were under 16 years old, so two brothers got together and approached Souths juniors for a license to form a club. We almost merged with Kensington United last year but hard heads and egos on both sides didn't let this happen. We've worked hard to build this club from scratch and have won 5 competitions since entering.

Originally the club was affiliated with the St Spyridon Greek church in Kingsford (Hence the Saints name) but this didn't quite work so is now standalone. .
We changed our name from Saints to Kensington Saints this year tobe more indentifiable with the area. We wear Red and White Hoops. The two founders are Souffs supporters but most of the kids support the Roosters!. I wish we were affiliated with the Roosters but I don't think they want to spend the money.
As much as I don't like the Souths influence, the Souths Juniors have been very generous to us and in the end it's all about the kids playing footy.
Cheers for that.

Cannot believe KU's attitude towards taking on those kids.....ridiculous stuff. Shame they're not affiliated with Easts and it just goes to show what can be done if clubs are interested.

2 brothers can do this, so imagine what an NRL club do with their resources....pretty disapointing really.

Yeah it's a shame that Paddo Colts dont exist anymore because as you stated Paddington once had a very strong working class presence with a local rugby league side to represent it.
I will have to agree with you on Jim Dymock as both him & his brothers were both bought up down the housing commision estate down Wooloomooloo.
HH, if you get a chance look up a book titled Sunshine & Shadow written by Larry Writer as it's astory (true) based on the lives of James & Steven Dack (& sister Alison) who were bought up around Wooloomooloo & played in the old Easts comp & Steve went on to play grade for the Roosters whilst James has remained loyal in his support to the club to this day.
I collect old Rugby League jerseys & i would love to get my hands on one from Paddo Colts.

Well, I am in Swansea (Newcastle, my in laws live here) and I'm sitting in this random cafe having a skim cappuccino....there is a dusty old basket sitting there filled with about 10 books....I stick my hand in and the first book I pull out is Sunshine and Shadow.

Cafe was more than happy to give it to me (they have a book sharing club or something), so I'll give it a burl.

Amazing really, always had it in my mind that I wanted to read it since your post almost 2 years ago.

Will let you know what I think.

Fairly sure Moore Park, Kensington, Coogee-Randwick, Coogee Dolphins used to be in the Easts comp...decades ago.
Moore Park commenced in SSJRL in 1911. Won its first A Grade premiership in 1928 when they entered 2 A Grade teams and the 2nd team won. In the same year they entered a 3rd A Grade team in the AHC Guild and won that as well.

Kensington certainly was an ES club, originally as the "Rovers", a team from the the ES Protestant Churches competition, which took over the ESJRL in the 1926 and 1927. Kenso teams played in ES from 1926-1933 by which time they were Kensington United. In 1934 they joined many other clubs from ES, SS, Newtown etc in the Metropolitan JRL. This competition had started as the AHC Guild (Catholic Association) in 1915 but as the number of teams diminished in the late 1920's they accepted all comers and changed name in 1931. So many teams left Souths that there was no A Grade in 1931. The NSWRL had imposed age limits on A Grade comps but the Metros were not affiliated and had no age or weight limits, running 3 open grades.

Coogee first played in ES in 1919 and Randwick in 1924. Both Coogee and Randwick had C Grade teams in ES in 1935.

Participation in the ESJRL peaked in 1952 when 17 teams played in the A Grade. The ladders were:

A Grade
Waterside Workers 38, Club Celebrity 32, Charing Cross 30, Royal Dragons 30, Bondi Utd 26, Bondi RSL 21, Bondi Junction RSL 21, Bing & Swing 19, Avalon 19, Woollahra Waratah 18, Olympians 16, Waverley Jnrs 15, Grahame Memorial 10, Fire Brigades 10, Clovelly 10, Paddo Colts 9, Oakleigh 6

B Grade
Paddo Colts 31, Clovelly 28, Woollahra Waratah 28, Bondi Utd 15, Bondi Jnrs 14

C Grade
Woollahra Waratah 32, Police Boys 28, Clovelly 20, Paddo Colts 18, Bronte 16, Bondi Utd 12, Rose Bay 10

The minor premiers won B & C grade but Club Celebrity, with 10 guys who had or would play 1st Grade, upset the Wharfies.

Wow - where did you pull all of that information from? I have heard the stories about how big that A Grade comp used to be at that time. The better sides were about reserve grade standard I believe.

Bing and Swing were an old Balmain Junior club of the time. My mum had brothers and cousins etc who played for them. Avalon also Northern Beaches so interesting they came over to play. Any other information you have, please send it on.

I have been researching the history of Junior League over the last few years. A South Sydney life member named Tom Brock bequested his collection, which ended up in the State Library - it includes a few issues of the ESDJRL weekly news from the 1950's and more than 30 years of weekly programs from the South Sydney JRL.

There were some odd names for teams - Avalon was an ES club not the northern beaches suburb. "Cairo" played A Grade from 1947-1951 and won the competition in 1950. Canberra Royals played in 1959-1960 but it was a pub in Paddington.

The Bing & Swing Social Club had teams in both the Balmain and ES comps. They played in Balmain in 1949-1954 and won A Grade in 1949, 1950 and 1954. The Daily Telegraph stated that the club was going to present a premiership blazer to its patron, Bing Crosby. They played in ES 1951-1955 but were far less successful than the Balmain side. It was reported that many of the players in the Balmain B & S team had come from the disbanded St James Sports Club, which won a number of A Grade & C Grade titles between 1933 and 1946.

Club Celebrity only existed for 1951 and 1952 but they won the title in both seasons. In 1952 they played ES Reserve Grade on the bye weekend and won 23-16. International, Jack Spencer, was captain coach, and Ray Lindwall's brother, Jack was also in the side, while among the 7 younger players that played 1st Grade, was supercoach, Jack Gibson. Celebrity's captain-coach in 1951 was former NSW forward, Jack Walsh while one of the other strong sides, Waverley Juniors had 3 ex 1st Graders. Charing Cross also had an international prop, Jim Armstrong.

In 1952, only 500 people turned up to the Sydney Sportsground to watch Easts vs Canterbury but the next day 5000 turned up to watch the Wharfies. The lead writer at the Herald had heard about these crowds so he went and wrote in the paper that 5 players from the Wharfies would walk into any 1st Grade team in Sydney. The Bookies would turn up and the big punters were giving bonuses to the star players such that there were better paid than 1st Graders.

* The competitions in 1926 and 1927 were run by the Eastern Suburbs Rugby Association (not affiliated with the NSWRL), with most of the teams formerly part of the Eastern Suburbs Protestant Churches Association and a minority of teams from the ESDJRL. Consequently, the NSWRL annual report states that no competitions were conducted by the ESDJRL, however in both 1926 and 1927 Easts had a team in the Presidents Cup picked from the clubs playing B Grade in the South Sydney competition - in 1926 Oakleigh & Fitzroys, while in 1927 it was only Oakleigh, which won the SS B Grade in both seasons and in fact playing as Easts in 1927 won the Presidents Cup.

Oakleigh and Fitzroys were clubs that had been part of the City and Suburban Rugby competition when Dally Messenger was playing for Double Bay Warrigals. Dally's brother, Wally in the ESDJRL for Double Bay in 1910 as well as Combined NSW Juniors before also becoming an international. Oakleigh switched to Rugby League in 1908 and rebadged itself as Sydney District and won the 3rd Grade competition at first attempt. A few years later when Sydney applied to join the 1st Grade comp, Easts supported the application even though they would lose area, unlike Newtown when Marrickville applied and Wests, who opposed the entry of St George, Canterbury and Parramatta as each was carved out of its area.

Wow, thought there'd be no hope you'd have all that. I can help with a small few of the post 1981 stuff:

A Grade
1985 - Bondi United
1990 - Nelson Hotel
1991 - Nelson Hotel
1993 - Bondi Royals

I'm sure Clovelly Won a couple of titles around the 1982 - 1984 time but I can't confirm

B Grade
1994 - Paddo Colts

C Grade
1981 - Paddo Colts
1989 - Bondi United
